To my understanding, one reason that the map type was changed was due to a global recognition that the "Euro-centric" map that was used previously leads to misinterpretations of the size comparisons between nations, which has historically led to racist ideology surrounding the global importance of many countires, including those in Africa. Which, does uncover a bit more of the reasoning behind the U.S. pulling out for it being "radically ideological". So, frankly, it does matter, though it's certainly harder to see the merit when the world is on fire
