i actually just decided to get off birth control last week! it'll be the first time in about 8 years so i'm very anxious about it

Parker

I get so many anti trans and anti abortion tik toks show up on my for you page and I actively try and force my algorithm to only recommend me sports Tik toks. I’ve noticed it in like the last two months probably.

savannah crozier

i thought head was like a reverse birth where the guys head goes into the 🐱 until i was like 14

MundaneBacklot

The podcast Qanon Anonymous has covered the wellness to Qanon pipeline extensively with great examination into the origins and motives that drive people to that pipeline. I highly recommend it for people who are interested, it's a really crazy phenomenon. (And thought the name may seem otherwise, it is a journalistic view into Qanon, NOT a pro Qanon show).

Jennica

Super interesting talking about the anti-birth control content, and the other recommendations!

N.N.

If anyone reads this and is wondering, it is perfectly fine to talk to your doctor and try to go off contraception for a period. 👩‍⚕️ Birth control is a hormone treatment. It can cause depression, decreased sex drive, reduction in vaginal discharge, headaches and nausea. It can be very hard to know beforehand to what you will feel like if you stop birth control. (It's not going to be positive for everyone, but will probably be for some) If you are in a relationship, talk to your partner about doing other stuff than vaginal sex to avoid getting anxious about getting pregnant. It might not be for everyone, but your partner will likely be supportive 👍

Jose Marin

What an episode 😵‍💫 Haven’t seen qt this dissociated in a while, almost seems like a diff personality. It’s crazy to see the difference. Glad I don’t have tik tok or even twitter now. It’s just getting crazier out there.

Nick

Hard agree that that progression of TikToks feels like undisguised propaganda.

Darren Hertenstein

It feels like propaganda because it is. The US Birthrate is trending downward so they're going all out to try and influence young women to want to have more babies. Throw in reversing Roe and all these deep Red states doing actual villain shit... You get a sad picture of the reality of our country.

Axolotl_Pines

I think the lack of an easy-access community also magnifies the pipeline bc it's being a part of a collective that believes the same stuff and if you want to fit in you eventually go with the flow. There's a story called Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie about the Muslim minority in the UK getting radicalized and falling into the ISIS pipeline during the early 2010s

StarlitMia

10k steps: I’m an elementary teacher and I hit 10k before lunch sometimes. But definitely before 4pm every day. Definitely just is a job that requires moving because getting 10k steps in the summer is virtually impossible for my gamer body.

TRM0

I'm not into conspiracy theories, so this is just a thought about the baby supply question: Rather than steal children and babies each time, they might have women enslaved for the purpose of breeding them children. There's already millions of women who have disappeared and never been found again.

Quinn Freedman

If you want to learn more about the whole pipeline thing, I can't recommend Dan Olson's video "In Search of a Flat Earth" enough. It's from a few years ago but goes into a ton of detail about all this stuff

mothpiles

I would love more of Maya explaining conspiracy theories but I think she’ll lose her mind

Avery

Good luck!

Avery

This is amazing and makes perfect kids logical sense

Avery

I feel like Maya missed the point to the missing persons to cave system picture. It isn't that they are kidnapped and put in caves it is theorized that people go missing because they accidentally fall into holes or somehow get trapped underground.

Ruben

*Something something avoid misinformation and support Wikipedia or something*

Michael

What a crazy episode! Good one though!!

Samantha

I stopped birth control a few years ago and it was one of the best things for me

type

Im half and half when it comes to antivaxxers because it’s shown that it does cause heart issues, look it up. No biased opinions, it just does. And you should never believe the government has 100% of your best interest in mind. Imagine trying to govern 300 million+ people. Propaganda is things for a reason. It isn’t fake. Life’s hard man.

Tyler Jones

I ended up in the “man” version of the pipeline starting in like 2016. For many men, it started with Joe Rogan. Back then, joe Rogan felt much more reasonable. As joe Rogan started going right, he started having conspiracy theory guests like Jordan Peterson on. I trusted joe, and joe trusted Jordan, so I trusted Jordan. If I didn’t get out of the pipeline, I would undoubtedly be a white nationalist, anti science person.

Benascor

I feel like that missing persons map has to be wrong considering there's a few major cities on there that don't show missing people. Detroit, for example, doesn't have any missing people on that map.

Jenna Palenski

Qt looks more like Margot Robbie than Margot Robbie does

SENOR_ESCANOR

Love the conspiracy theory convo. I wrote for my law school journal about one called the great replacement theory. If you want to see social engineering in progress in the mainstream, look into that one Maya :) it sucks

Lixy

I had to give up on BC since it made me severely depressed, even after trying different doses and brands. I still use other forms of contraceptives though.

Kyle

The crux of the issue is a lack of education. Critical thinking skills are missing in a lot of people which would stop many of these conspiracies early on.

PuffTheDargon

FYI, if you are tracking steps, use a watch of some kind not a phone. phones are notoriously inaccurate and under count. my daily at work with phone is like 6k. same day on the watch is like 10k +

Alex Acuna

Maya hard carried this episode from falling apart several times.

PuffTheDargon

this is why i dont use tik tok. nah fam im not out here trying to get flooded with the most random ass shit.

PuffTheDargon

okay the beginning of the conspiracy convo had me worried.. yes. massive grains of salt. everything.

bl00dzee

I’m glad Maya had the awareness to not fall into the social media bull shit. Again, there’s scientific, peer reviewed facts backed by science and there’s Facebook/tik tok scientist that just say anything without any fact checking or accountability. It’s the worst time I think ever right now for social media where impressions are making people forget basic morals or decency. So many people will say anything for money and clout now. It’s despicable.

seni

With the whole qanon pipeline discussion, it reminds me of that one story/fable of how if you put a frog into boiling water, it’ll jump straight out but if you place it in tepid water and slowly turn up the heat, it won’t realize it’s boiling alive until it’s too late! People on that side of the internet are the same, they start off on this “positive” sort of note usually focused on “protecting” their loved ones and all of a sudden they’re too far gone to be unradicalized. I also am fascinated with how USA/1st-world country of an issue this is. I think it’s because you guys grow up in a bubble in terms of thinking that your country/government is great bc of propaganda since birth (like the pledge of allegiance for example or kids dreaming of being policemen since before school) whereas in other countries, before you can even read or write you already know the government is fucked up bc of how visible the systemic violence. For us, the bubble never existed but for you guys, it’s just a countdown of when that bubble will burst and when it does, it’s no surprise that it’s gonna make people go crazy and believe any crazy take their social media shows them.

seni

Also, the birth control epidemic is too fucking real. It’s simple. You go into the doctor’s office as a teen/tween with acne/hormonal issues and before the doctor even learns your name or your age, they’re already prescribing you birth control because this damn country can’t bother to ever provide proper medical care to women bc of how “difficult” they consider our bodies to be. Even with many common medicines in our medicines cabinets, so many of them were never tested on women on their periods because the companies running those pharmaceutical trials don’t wanna deal (and pay!) with all the ways in which hormones might severely alter trial results and then delay the rollout of those medicines. It’s so infuriating the ways in which women are disadvantaged in healthcare.

Witold Chyło

I relate so much to the pipeline stuff, my parents started as feng shui and wellness enthusiasts and ended up as hardcore antivaxxers and pseudoscientists :(

Chris

for as serious the topics in this episode were, y’all both had so many one liners that just made me cackle

SK J

Love this episode

seashell

lot of truth in episode, love it. we are in an age of info overload where two people can live in completely different realities depending on algorithms. google cant even clean up their own search results from seo garbage making the internet less useful, how is an individual who isnt well informed supposed to tell fact from fiction

jaspersjourney

theres a couple questionable qanons up there lookUp

Kelly Riggs

Haven’t finished the ep yet, but I’m just happy to hear y’all talking about the ways wellness culture can get you into some very weird and very problematic stuff! I’ve been annoying my friends and family talking about the wellness-to-q anon pipeline for so long and they act like I’m nuts 🙃

DeftCG

Buddy, that's saying " there's a plausible reason why X could be Y, therefore X is Y". That's just as weak as any conspiracy theory, do better

DeftCG

Please never from opinions about issues from TikTok and how you feel about what might be driving TikTok content. That's not gonna do ya well. Here are links to a few papers, mostly meta analyses, around contraception. things like differences in mate selection are established science, sexual dysfunction does not seem to be supported, lower sex drive is indicated, impact on certain mood disorders is indicated. its there if you want to learn about it, so you can distinguish pseudoscience from science, and propaganda from reality: https://digitalcommons.humboldt.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1356&context=etd https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9218393/ https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.556577/full https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1743609520307116

RussianI3aer

These tiktoks are anti feminist sentiment cosplaying as feminism. Much like Pearl but with a softer note, this is propaganda. Being a stay at home parent is fine but pushing it as superior over being a breadwinner as some form of super feminism or return to western values is cringe

Ian

QT, time for mind blown moment, its "He looks up grinning like a devil" in cruel summer. I didn't know that until like two weeks after I saw her in Detroit 😆

Jimijaymes Productions

I try to do 15000 steps per day, the key is to walk to everything (I think in LA this is not so possible). I walk to get coffee, to the supermarket, to work some of these places are 30 min walk away. There is a lot of privilege in being able to walk to work (30 mins for me). This is part of the reason like Hasan I advocate for walkable/public transport city over driving cities. Most people don't want to have to work, most jobs suck. There is a reason certain countries have shorter work weeks and longer vacations. Not wanting the option to work or the ability is the issues.

Martin Louis V

Great episode, and great conclusions. A bit of a wild ride getting to those conclusions, but good pod! Not complaining, but it is concerning at times how quick the leap to male patriarchy comes up. When Maya said conspiracy theories, I was like ohh like Chuck E. Cheese pizza, or maybe like UFOs. Only Maya would get contraceptive conspiracies. Way to go full Alex Jones with the conspiracies Maya! Also QT needs to give us Disney Lure conspiracies, but only if she wants to lol!

Julie T

describing q anon as "reddit but scarier" is incredible

ClimateKy

Damn Maya discovering the Wellness to Neo-conservative pipeline is not something I expected, but I'm glad you talked about it! My sister is deep down that pipeline and it started relatively harmless, I would pushback every now and then and pick fun at the little weird "health" things she would do... it's turned into anti-vax, homeschooling my children, evolution is fake, etc. It happens rapidly and it has significant consequences.

Noah Smith

I can confirm I did not tell anyone "pussy tastes like vanilla"

Georgette Rosin

years and years ago, my (bad) OB prescribed me birth control. i told her i was on antidepressants (a few, ssris which i dont like to fuck around with) and i asked her if i'd be okay. she assured me i would be. i believed her. cue the first night, i started having panic attacks badly. the next 72 hours (i only took them for two days) was me crying in bed freaking out feeling like i was going to die in a million diff ways. NEVER. AGAIN. it took about a week for my body to calm tf down.

Howdy Tims

I love this because Maya is so correct about everything she has said this ep but at the same time she low-key hates Hasan

77katz77

One of the books the professor of my last English class assigned was "Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now" by Jaron Lanier. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to explore and learn more about conspiracy pipelines and in general why people do the things they do that you may not understand. Maya did a good job summarizing it, one thing I would like to add is that, for social media companies (advertisers) negative engagement is much more effective at keeping someone on a platform than positive. Try and keep that mind whenever you see something radical/triggering show up on your feed.

Grace

I'm curious, what led you to getting out?

Michael Castrataro

LA is so funny to me, i feel like 80% of the businesses peddling healthy shit are just scamming

Mitch Mitcherson

Maya is right to stay frosty about info presented on social media. It seems like there are a lot of pipelines to Qanon. People look up cat videos and 5 hours later believe Hilary Clinton is harvesting adrenochrome. Also both tops are great.

Alex Blythe

Apples ARE poison ☠️

Zay

Not huge on conspiracies and stuff, but I do think the internet is interesting in terms of how fast information travels and how even faster people can latch onto said information. I think the internet is and has a lot of potential for good things but people should be more mindful of not only the way they accept new information but the way they reject new information as well.

BS

Another dangerous pipeline for soccer moms is horoscopes for "fun", into crystals because they're "pretty", into natural stuff = good and then into antivaxx. One thing left and right can agree on is they both have their own reasons to be anti vaxx

ChubbyHobo

i like conspiracy theories. people are crazy. i like to stay informed so that i can pass the test with crazy people at work.

Redcoat

Great episode. Maya sums it up very well. And this type of stuff completely erases trust in science, which seems to be the real danger. You don't have to believe the more extreme stuff like 5G, but if you believe the level that is more "reasonable", such as the covid vaccine being used for control and profits, it leads to other dangerous conclusions. I have smart family members (older) that have bought into some of the less extreme stuff, and I also feel it has given them more confidence to express doubts about man made climate change. There have been so many things from the Republican party that should be met with a kind of "WTF" response, but haven't been. It's 2023 and we are dealing with things like Abortion rights being completely repealed in some states, an attack on democracy through Trump and Jan 6 and the attack on mail in voting. They are somehow still an anthropogenic climate change denying party, despite world wide science making their conclusions. Trump literally appointed a guy with oil ties to the head of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) when he was in office. The one hope I have is that this seems to be much more common in the older generation. If they can't place their views on the upcoming generation (which they seem to be overwhelmingly failing to do), then I think over the next couple of decades some of the insane takes will die out.

Lezzleee

QT, 10k steps isn't actually a health recommendation from experts. It was a promo from a Japanese fitness tracker because 10k in Japan is a cute kanji. If you want to lose weight, focus on weight training. Muscles burn calories. More muscle = more calories burned. "The idea of walking 10,000 steps a day was invented as part of the marketing campaign for an early pedometer ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Japanese character for 10,000 looks rather like a person walking so the device was called the Manpo-kei or 10,000 steps meter."

GOD GAVE ME THE STRENTGH TODAY

finley

literally all of my close family members that i live with are like one step away from the violence. luckily 2 r too old to do anything and the other is a full time worker who still doesn’t have enough money to live on her own so she doesn’t get too involved. however, my mother cried when i told her i was going to get the vaccine and wait till i tell her i’m trans and bi lol. she has gone to many “prochoice” rallies but they r for “prochoice” about the vaccine. i go to sleep listening to fox news every day and wake up to it. my family truly does thing donald trump will “save” us. i have a list on my phone of all the crazy shit i hear them say in case i ever need to testify or something bc i genuinely don’t trust them. they thought the rapture would come four times in the last two years and they stocked up on food and water and gas in case there was a world wide shut down involved. there truly is no way to save them, they just pity others who “don’t see the truth”. it’s crazy bc my mother raised me to be empathetic and the person i am and i look at her today and i see one of the most hateful people in the world. thank god i’m moving in a week and wishing anyone out there in a situation like this well, ik it’s difficult and it gets better, grind for that college acceptance or apartment or whatever u need

5chizo_4Rt

social engineering is indeed rlly scary rn. But the main brunt of it (in my opinion) as Maya mentioned a little, is that one extreme( the right) is far more accepting of people who are leaning in both ways and/or don't really have strong values to place themselves. whereas the left, generally speaking(and in my opinion again) has adopted this form of intolerance. It's either 'ur on our side or we hate you and we don't wanna engage with you'. it's in a sense forcing people to the right because they assume everyone is informed of each side's values/goals and actively choose to not be on their side. Then they see the right where pretty much anything goes and are welcoming to any line of thinking (sorry not sorry).
