Sepsis is a blood infection I believe and even now it can be quite dangerous. She did indeed get the infection due to the cut on her hand. It's terrifying how something so quick and seemingly small can cause that. It's hard watching the ep, but it also makes a lot of sense that they did it and storywise Mary made a lot of sense to tell it with as well. Still sucks tho :(
