Wei Wuxian has a brilliant mind, good with sword, and an inventor (you can see that the whole cultivation world using his inventions like the flag and the compass in the first 2 episodes). Main point of the discussion between Wei Ying and the teacher Lan is the use of resentful energy. Usually, for all the 'magic' and 'sword forms', the cultivators use the spiritual energy, which is considered to be purest and positive form of energy. Cultivators develop something like golden core in childhood and use this core as a medium to access spiritual energy. On the other hand resentful energy is considered negative. It is found with dead spirits, dead people, ghosts etc. As the name suggests, resentful energy is full of anger, hate, rage etc. Using it will affect the mind of the person using it, harmful to himself and others around him. That is why it is considered a heretic path and big taboo in the cultivation world. When Wei Ying suggested this path as the fourth option, teacher got really angry. This is not a spoiler, but just a general framework of this world.
