Hi everyone! I’m collecting data on the Performance Templates to see which ones are the most valuable to users. It’ll help me decide how to best use my energy going forward.

Please let me know which template you chose and why. If you can also identify the PART you use the most, that would also be helpful. Thank you all so much for your support, and I have a lot more in the works for you!

Best,

Matt

I bought the Octatrack to be a sampler, and it works so well for performing live with evolving vocal slices and jumping around different slots while improvising, I just always gravitate towards the Hybrid Template or the Solo template. The Performance Mixer template (utilizing the live looping and rechopping the buffer) is also sick, but I don't have another stereo sampler, so I just can't use it for live performance as much as I'd like. My fantasy is one OT running the performance template, and one running my own home-cooked sample-mangling-live-looping-remixing template.

Enjoy using my octatrack more so as a standalone sampler in my setup so the solo template really suites my needs. Having the extra flex tracks in my workflow is really nice. Usually have 5 with the 6th track being used as a send for my Tascam Model 12. Then I put all my other synths and drums machines on the sub output of the model 12 and route that into a dir input on the octatrack so I can use the crossfader on a master channel

The performance template has changed how I approach performance entirely

Hard question: I have to say the performance mixer… just because it’s the most practical for taking my music to the next level. The scenes in that template have the highest clarity and dynamic and the loopers are super intuitive and immediately useful. I love making loops and switching to part:4 party and just going to town… the performance template should literally be the default state of all Octatrack boxes. If you asked in order of preference the list would be 1. Performance template 3 2. Hybrid template 3. Remixer template (although this one is in a way the most fun and creative… haven’t totally worked out a way to use it live) 4. Octacosm is just brilliant and should be its own category. I think Octacosm could go a number of different directions and all would be great. I would love a version where parts 2-4 incorporated elements of the hybrid and remix template so you could create an atmosphere, then loop it into the buffer and remix it or play the other boxes alongside it. Like 4 parts.. capture, hybrid, remix, perform

Voted for Ultimate FX 2FF 1.1.5, I switched the 2 Flex-Machines to 2 Static-Machines, cause it's one of my favorite features to stream long samples or even full tracks from the CF-Card, though the template became a bit buggy afterwards somehow.

Comandante

No need for Riser Samples or FX for me.

gattART

I had to go for the older Ultimate FX for the fantastic ability to loop either A/B or C/D. I'd say it might be enough to just being able to loop the non-rhythm side, which in my case is the guitar and guitar synth, while drums and long pads or samples play on. Really need two Octatracks... 🤷‍♂️

i'm a relatively new user of the templates, but similar to what some others have said above - I'm in favour of keeping a few tracks available for our own samples :)

Alex Weber

I started with the Performance Mixer, then tried Ultimate FX to see how they were similar/different. Now I've been using the Hybrid template because having a free track to play with is educational. Those are my top 3 and why!

Matthew Davis

I love the hybrid- not really a fan of being tied to a drum bus and melodic bus. Plus having some longer samples to play with is nice. And Space #4 is everything!!! Just for context - running Syntakt into a/b, Digitakt into c/d. Cue out through digi and back into octa and eurorack case into Syntakt

mhCRISPO

I think it might be the Ultimate Remixer, but it could also be the Hybrid Mixer. Honestly, I'm getting confused and overwhelmed by all the similar template names.

Danny Werner

Hybrid for me because having the OT as a sample source with the free flex tracks I’m able to chop and mangle samples in a way that I cannot with digitakt(ab) or Sp404(cd)!

ezbot

It's because they are a "type" and I am using the same type name with a different series name. Like Ultimate FX is a template series, and Performance Mixer is another.

ezbot

Love hearing this, I need to update that template.

ezbot

Very cool, great use case!

ezbot

That sounds like quite the signal chain, I like it!

ezbot

Thank you for the response!

ezbot

Perfect, I am glad that project is working for you!

ezbot

Yeah, I love that one! I miss using it, but I've been rocking the PM3.0 template for the last few shows.

ezbot

Alright,! A classic OT user

ezbot

Interesting, I can imagine a few dominos started to fall internally.

Chambre46

Personally I love all the templates especially those with noise risers even though you have to give up a track for that. The good thing is that every template has different routings so depending of the machines configuration I want to use I d pick the appropriate template, using the OT as a performance mixer or rather jamming. Nowadays Digitak2 having 16 audio tracks I no longer feel the need to use the OT as a sampler even though the OT as a sampler I find it unique

mhCRISPO

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I got it but never the less ... ;) They are all amazing anyway!

Atograph

I generally don't use multiple inputs when I perform so the solo template works best for me as a starting point. Usually it's just my modular case into the OT for melodic parts and I use T1-T4 for drum samples. Since the default effect scenes on that template don't require T6, sometimes I'll use that to add one more track for bass samples or something I was really happy when you made the solo template because I used to spend time reworking the performance template to fit my needs LOL.

Gary McTeggart

I chose 3.1.2 because I think I'll use the eight bar risers. I've been using a really old template just because it gave me enough options but after watching your latest vid on the hybrid template I've decided to update today. i can't even remember exactly how it's done but I'll work it out. Keep up the great work. The octocosm as a replacement for the microscosm seems like a great idea too as I've looked at that hardware even for my guitar. i'm a guitarist like yourself and just like the DIY nature of elektron gear but I do play in a stoner rock band as a hobby.

mhCRISPO

The results are quite interesting. Currently, the Performance Mixer and Hybrid Mixer are the favorites. However, given their current state, it's challenging to see how they can be improved further. In my opinion, they have already reached their maximum quality."

ezbot

That's quite a compliment! I do have some fresh ideas but they will likely be in a new project.

Reading through all these comments explaining various live use cases makes me really inspired and curious… Is there a place to share links to members’ gig-videos on the EZBOT discord?

ezbot

There isn’t but that’s a cool idea

Lincoln Webber

Hard choice I had used a variation on the Ultimate FX template at several gigs and getting quite familiar and fluid with it I loved how you could loop the drum and have the synth playing live and vice versa, and also the reverse function on key five or six. I’ve now been using a variation of the Performance Mixer Template and love the risers 8bar builds not sure I’ll ever go back to the Ultimate FX but I had a blast with it.

Will Meier

out of curiosity, is there a limitation that makes the performance 3.0 unable to target A/B & C/D independently for looping?

ezbot

No, you can target them separately if you want. Press REC 1 for AB and REC 2 for CD, REC 3 for both.

ezbot

Glad you like it!
