Techno Performance Mixer V2 x.x Template for the Octatrack MK1/MK2 // Manual by EZBOT

Note for Patrons: Consider this a beta release! If you want to see any effects tweaked, new features added, or have any other valuable feedback, now is the perfect time to test it out. Please share your thoughts with me before I lock these settings in permanently. This performance template is all about ease of use, a focus on dual-deck looping, and tasteful, reusable effects for Techno, House, and DnB. The Beat Repeat effects offer colorful and clean variations of filter values and modulation FX, organized in descending time increments (4-1/2, 3-1/4, 2-1/8 and 1-1/16), and 1-1/16). Auto-FX deliver 4-bar filter sweeps with long reverbs or delays, twisting LFO transitions, and varying build-ups and drops. A high-pass filter is essential in Techno, so you will always find one available on Scene 9. The other filters are simple, playable filters with varying FX. Scenes 11 and 12 each high-pass a different input bus, giving you maximum flexibility while performing. The Loopers are a core part of this template. Each audio source has its own dedicated input bus, allowing you to record your drums and melodies separately. This opens up massive creative possibilities; for example, you can capture a loop while actively tweaking performance FX, then transition silently to that FX-baked recording while the other input continues to play live. This instantly gives you a fresh segment of audio to program new drums over. There is also always a Master Looper on Track 16 for classic DJ transitions.

***Video manual coming soon***

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:

Plug in the USB to your Octatrack -> On your Octatrack press PROJ to enter the Settings -> System -> USB Disk mode ->

Your Octatrack will mount as a disk on your computer. Open your Octatrack drive on your computer and find your set folder (typically called PRESETS MKII if you have a MKII).

Open your set folder on your Octatrack via your computer -> Drop the UNZIPPED project folder called Techno Mix V2 x.x in with your other project folders on your Octatrack.

Press NO on your Octatrack to leave disk mode.

Open the project file called Techno Mix V2 x.x on your Octatrack.

All Banks and Patterns are populated with the TECHNO MIX V2 template at a default tempo of 120 BPM and a pattern master scale of 64 steps (4 bars).

EZBOT: I recommend that you use the Octatrack as your master clock and change patterns from your external devices. This will provide the highest fidelity of effects and allow for easy live looping and transitions. Watch the tutorial for more info on transitions.

***Clicks and pops can be caused by unstable BPM from external clocking sources. To avoid this use a stable clocking source such as the Octatrack itself.

***Audio CC outs is disabled by default.

***Be sure RECORD QUICK MODE is enabled in your system settings. --> PROJECT --> SYSTEM --> PERSONALIZE --> RECORD QUICK MODE (ENABLE)

***Transport Send/Receive, Clock Send/Receive are active by default. Do not send the Octatrack a clock source when you want the Octatrack to be the master clock, or disable incoming clock: FUNC + MIDI to enter MIDI clock settings, here you can disable or change MIDI clock settings.

AUDIO ROUTING: Drums go into A/B stereo inputs and melody goes into C/D stereo inputs.

There are DJ EQ's on "DECK 1" (Recorder Track 4) and "DECK 2" (Recorder Track 8)

TO RECORD:

Method 1: When NOT in step sequencer mode/step editing is active. A 4-bar loop can be recorded onto tracks 4 and 8. Recordings are quantized to 4-bar intervals with time-stretch engaged on mode NORMAL. i.e. Press YES on bar 3 of 4 and a recording will begin on the next bar 1. For an 8-bar pattern pressing YES on bar 4/8 will begin a recording on bar 5.

To record a 4-bar DRUM (A/B) loop only HOLD TRACK 4 and PRESS YES.

To record a 4-bar MELODY (C/D) loop only HOLD TRACK 8 and PRESS YES.

Press YES to record a 4-bar Master Loop.

Method 2: REC-3 is set to TRIG ONE2 so you can stop a recording manually if desired.

Press REC-3 while track 8 is highlighted to record a 4-bar loop DRUM (A/B) loop.

Press REC-3 while track 5 is highlighted to record a 4-bar loop MELODY (C/D) loop.

***Recording without record quick mode enabled will require you to hold track 5 and press REC-3.

TO SAVE A RECORDING TO FILE: Select Track 5 or Track 8, Press FUNC + REC 3 and choose "Save This Recording". This is useful for creating stems to save and use in other projects or to transfer to your computer. Remember you have two busses being recorded separately to make up the master track.

FREEZE DELAY is available on Tracks 1 and 5. To use the FREEZE DELAY hold FUNC + DOWN ARROW and select DELAY CONTROL. GREEN button 9 controls the FREEZE DELAY for inputs A/B and 13 controls the FREEZE DELAY for inputs C/D. Pressing them at the same time will freeze your whole mix. Explore this.

FX BLOCKS: CULT, SECT, VOID, and OMEN

SIDECHAIN PUMP: To engage sidechain pump on CD inputs turn up LFO 3 on TRACK 5. Or use OXI E16 PUMP encoder. Sidechain pumping is PRE-FX. Sidechain triggers on TRACK 5. You can adjust their position by copying and pasting steps but do not remove the RED trigger on STEP 1. You will lose all audio if you do.

64 Scenes across 4 Parts. To move to a different set of 16 scenes/FX press PART and use the arrow keys to select a new (part) SET OF 16 EFFECTS.

Each FX block has 16 unique but similar performance effects.

1. Beat Repeat 1 - 1/16th Note

2. Beat Repeat 2 - 1/8th Note

3. Beat Repeat 3 - 1/4th Note

I hope you enjoy it!

Ewan

I was all set to start building my own template but I think this might actually do everything I need 😂

Ewan

Just want to check: "Press REC-3 while track 5 is highlighted to record a 4-bar loop DRUM (A/B) loop. Press REC-3 while track 5 is highlighted to record a 4-bar loop MELODY (C/D) loop." Is that a typo or am I missing something?

ezbot

Yes typo. Track 8

Ewan

Thank god, thought I was missing something there! Thanks! 😁

Eric Sherman

Thank you thank you! The input-dependent loopers on 14 and 15 behave EXACTLY how I hoped they would!

RYEL

Oooh, fantastic. Will check this one out! Excited to try it out with my E16 as well!

ezbot

Let me know how it goes!

Toff.Chunks

hi Matthew first many thanks as usual )))) Second is it possible that you make an 8 bars loop one?

ezbot

I hadn't planned on it. There are a few technical issues with 8 bar templates and dual recorder templates like this one. The FX can adjust to fit 8 bars (it is a pain to adjust them all) but to record a master loop requires a bunch of button presses instead of just pressing YES like you can on a 4 bar loop. It's imo unuseable to use the looper in dual bus recorder templates like this.

RYEL

Hey Matt! I finally got around to trying this out with my E16. One thing I noticed on the Octatrack: On Part 1 (cult), the default base width filter settings on T2 and T6 are cutting out all the un-effected audio, so I can only hear my Digitone/Digitakt if I move the crossfader to the right. Was that intentional?

ezbot

Oh that is not my intention. If you press the encoder on the E16 for the filters they should reset

RYEL

Ok. It could have been the E16 itself. I believe that by default it sends an initial snapshot state to the device. Maybe that only impacted the first part. EDIT: Confirmed, yes it is the E16 itself sending the initial snapshot of values to the Octatrack. This is fantastic, BTW. Very simple, but highly effective choice of performance controls! Whenever I map these controllers out I find I go overboard and wind up either mirroring settings already easily available on the device, or I make a mapping that is just too complicated.
