LEARN ORCΛ LIVE CODING ~ IN DEPTH TUTORIAL (Pt. 1)

In this video I will show you how to use ORCA livecoding software. We will cover everything from connecting your midi device to creating several different types of sequencers. Grab you favorite groovebox and lets make some music! Find more on ORCA here: https://github.com/hundredrabbits/Orca Buy ORCA here: https://hundredrabbits.itch.io/orca From Hundredrabbits: Orca is an esoteric programming language designed to quickly create procedural sequencers, in which every letter of the alphabet is an operation, where lowercase letters operate on bang, uppercase letters operate each frame. This application is not a synthesizer, but a flexible livecoding environment capable of sending MIDI, OSC & UDP to your audio/visual interfaces, like Ableton, Renoise, VCV Rack or SuperCollider. Ahoy! Great video. Watched it all and applied everything you used there. I had this concrete question about I'll copy it here, just in case you won't see it in the comments: "I'm using my OP-1 here and I'm having troubles with changing the channels (the first number after the " : " I can only use 0) Could you give me a hint about what I could be doing wrong there?" Cheers and can't wait to see the next video!

You did this with the OP-1, yeah? The OP-1 only makes one sound at a time unless you are using the drum track, than you still use only one midi channel but you trigger different sounds based on what notes you use. The OP-Z, Deluge, Digitakt, Digitone, Roland MC-101 etc. have multiple tracks which puts them into the category of multitimbral synthesizers/samplers.

ezbot

Essentially, you are using the default midi channel with your OP-1 which is good thing cause it's clearly working! :) If you want to play with using multiple tracks/channels you will want to either use a different machine or some software. I can help you with that if you want!

:D Yey! So that was one of the options I was thinking of - cuz I always felt OP-Z had a different way to be used than OP-1. So, I'm gonna investigate if I can use Ableton to get this thing playing...I guess there you can have multiple Midi tracks and that could work? I'm a total newbie in all this, but I try to listen to my intuition. My current set is OP-1 (+ some PO's), Plumbutter 2, BastlThyme (that's FX), and LorreMill's KeyedMosstone - it is rather a weird non conventional set up, and I know it won't be as dynamic or easy to use in a live performance. *I'm still figuring things out from my instruments, like how to set those modulars' (PB2 and Keyed) clock to the bpm I'm using somewhere else - that's actually a big question I always have* So yes, I was wondering if Elektron Cycles would be a good purchase. I guess it is multi midi channel and could work well with ORCA. But in the meanwhile I will try other solutions, like using a program Thanks for your tremendous help!

Also, you can use ORCA to control the BastlThyme, if it can receive midi and midi CC ORCA can manipulate it. It goes like this: ! . . . The first column is your channel, second is your "knob", and third is your value. :)

I wrote out a message but it vanished.. rrrgh. Yes, Model:Cycles will be perfect for making with ORCA, so would Ableton! Anything with multiple midi channels/instruments is a great friend to ORCA.

WHAAAT! Thyme as well? man, we're living the dream Thanks for the awesome tips. I got ORCA working with Ableton, and I'm supah happy. Let's go crazy.

Hows the ORCA going?

Guille García

It's addictive man. I'm now trying to figure out how to do that Thyme CV control thing. It has a CV control in (aux) and I thought the only way to go would be to connect to the computer's mic/headphones aux. I'm trying the ! · · · but I don't see any difference so far. Am I doing something wrong?

You have to have a DC coupled audio interface :/ What kind of interface do you have?
