I thought it might be cool to show you what my video studio looks like at Patchwerks and give you some key details about the environment. I designed it myself (my co-worker Rae painted the walls with their partner Mark) and picked out the colors based on an old synthesizer called the Maestro W-2 made by Gibson in the 60's (here's a link to see/hear it for yourself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jcJ2H5F3mU).

I use a glide gear overhead system with C-Stands for support. We use 3 cameras all A6400's. 2 of cameras have Sony E-Mount 3.5-5.6 18-135 OSS lenses while the last one has a simple kit lens. I plan on upgrading one of the lenses to a 35mm as soon as I can.

I have 2 of the cameras (overhead and face) wired directly into an ATEM Mini Pro for streaming and very useful to get levels for videos which I can view on the monitor on the desk. The way things are setup it is very easy for me to just hit record, snap a photo of what's on screen, or start a stream instantly.

For audio we use a Korg Soundlink Mixer which is a pricey mixer (maybe overkill) but it is a nice mixer so I am not complaining. I use a Sennheiser MKE 600 for voice which you can see attached to the boom. The mixer is fed into a Focusrite 4i4 MK3 - which is not ideal in my opinion and I do not like this interface. I mostly don't like it because it's mixer app is pretty weak and it causes blue screens if the USB accidentally gets unplugged. Maybe I am being a brat but for commercial use I would prefer RME, Apollo, Antelope, or Audient. These are the interface brands that get my attention.

I use Yamaha HS5's and AKG K240's for mixing.

This entire setup is the bigger version of my home setup (EZBOT setup) except I have a few better lenses and a higher end camera for face shots: A7Rmk2, Sony 35mm 1.8 lens, and Sigma16mm 1.4

One of that last pieces of the puzzle is sound treatment which you can see we are lacking. Small steps for the synth shop though, we are getting there one day at a time!

Hope you enjoyed this little Patreon blurb, I am thinking about adding more of this type of blog/vlog content. What do you think?

Thanks for sharing the behind the scenes footage this is exactly what I wanted to see as I'm still trying to decide on what to get. Do you have a bit of sample footage using the gear that you can share? I'm keen to see more of these blog/vlog posts. I like practical insights personally :) Thanks Matt

Thanks Troy, the most recent patchwerks video shows off how the footage turned out before I blocked the sky light. Check it out! https://youtu.be/hzvH3pIORo0

Nice one yeah somehow I missed this video… I think it was because I didn’t want to be tempted in buying another Groovebox haha 😂 but that reverb is super interesting and cool 😎

This is cool to see thanks. What’s the elevator pitch for the korg mixer?

ezbot

Thanks for letting me know! As far as the elevator pitch, I think you are referring to the drawers beneath the mixer? It just a metal cabinet the prior tenants left when they moved out. The mixer is just sitting right on on top.

Ahh no sorry as in… what’s a quick summary of why you’d go with the korg mixer over something similar but cheaper. ;)

Nice peek behind the scenes Matthew. Let the magic begin.

Zoltan! I hope you are doing well my friend. I’ll show it to you in person if you ever find your way to Seattle :)

Ahhh. I wouldn’t go with this mixer unless you are in love with its feature set. For a video studio it’s absolutely overkill. For a home mixer I would go with a tascam model series
