Hello, friends!

The Ultimate FX template with MIDI is coming to Patreon in the next few days. This update will be fantastic for the newest templates, Ultimate and 2FF. It will only require one scene on your MIDI controller for all four parts because of the way the template is constructed. Additionally, if you are using a SHIK, you will get some extra macro scenes.

Speaking of MIDI controllers, I personally own the FaderFox EC-4 and the SHIK. I'm curious to know what your favorite controllers are. Better yet, what do you think is the perfect MIDI controller for live performance?

You are amazing, and I hope you are having a great day!

All the best,

Matt

Could this have anything to do with why I’m having a hard time getting my octatrack to detect my midi cc in auto detect with my super 6…..? Feel free to say no

ezbot

No it wouldn’t, have you looked into your CC receive settings on the OT?

Noah Smith

I have. I’ll keep searching!

For me, Electra One is pretty much the perfect midi controller. Totally flexible, but the screen ( and bi directional midi) means you have the feedback that is so often missing with midi controllers.

ezbot

I have the Electra One Mk2, I just didn’t mention it cause it’s so expensive. You like yours huh?

lobo

faderfox!

Jeroen

I have the Electra One too and would love to see deep integration with the EZbot templates for it. I find the E1 very flexible but it could use a few more hardware buttons/pads, and for OT use having 2x8 knobs instead of 2x6 would have been better. Previously had a Faderfox PC12 and MX12 so I was a bit spoiled with buttons, knobs & sliders. AFAIK the OT is the only Elektron that sends back MIDI data (CC 61 Send Request) - would there be any benefits of this with your templates?

I have been experimenting with a novation launchpad pro MK3 and an octatrack for a while now. It’s great as a stand alone controller, as the different pages in custom mode can be mapped to transport actions, mutes, and faders. That said, I probably will forgo using it live and just enjoy using it in the studio. I would prefer faderfox stuff live.

ezbot

Yes, I agree with that assessment!

ezbot

I was thinking about returning it but maybe I’ll hold out and make some templates for it. I am really on the fence

Been looking at the Faderfox for a while, as the screen looks like it would be really helpful and the encoders also have push function. I'd choose that but don't have experience with one! Can I ask anyone how the push function feels compared to Elektron boxes? I always need to be careful pressing those down as they can easy change settings, so it can be a little slow when playing live.

At this stage I’ve owned so many controllers. I tried the novation launchpad pro last year but I wasn’t doing it for me. I’ve owned Faderfox gear in the past & it’s so solid & reliable but the current models are too big & expensive for what I need. Currently on the Shiik buzz as is small & highly customisable & delighted that EZ has integrated them. I also have a template for the Analog Four as it’s central to my performance set up.

Keystep and Novation Launch Control XL but still figuring out the XL...

ezbot

Launch control is legit for this 100%

ezbot

Yes the SHIK is really great for this

Frej Moström

Could you make a walkthrough of the EC-4 aswell? how you work with input output to get it to update when you fuck around on the octatrack? I think that could excite alot of folks to get one. It´s the only midi controller i know of that has the possibility to have feedback on what you do or change on the octatrack in real-time?

CDC

SHIK Definitely!

Jeroen

For me having a screen that shows what control does what is really valuable, especially when switching pages/presets. And it's really easy to configure, and has scripting if you need more. The PC12 for instance looks great on paper with its 72 pots but unless you use it daily you start to forget which one does what. Also the E1 is a kind of MIDI hub (with its dual USB ports and dual MIDI I/O interface giving you control over 32 channels) which is convenient. The EC4 could work too but I'd need two probably and that's even more expensive than an E1. I hope you hold on to it a bit longer!

Andreas Tilliander

Oh, I've got a FaderFox EC-4 as well. Did you get it to work bidirectional with the Octatrack or how do you cope with values and knob settings not being the same?

Dan Rhode

Launch Control XL and Midi Twister

ezbot

I got this working last night :)

ezbot

Yes, i can show ya'll how to do that

Andreas Tilliander

Would love to see that! I was a beta tester for the very first Octatrack and I've used it almost weekly since. But using it with a controller might be the next step. Please do a vid or something :)

Josh David

@Jeroen How do you like Electra One? I've been thinking about grabbing a presale with main interest to map outboard gear, ableton devices, and vst all at the same time. Seems like it would be killer for Octatrack as well @ezbot. Definitely has a bit of complexity it appears at least initially, but seems like you could really do killer mappings in a couple different ways. Say like overall params, per track, who knows what else. Would love to know your thoughts @EZBOT if you dive in a bit!

ezbot

Whoa! For the first Octatrack?!

Whilden Hughes

The faderfox pc-12 has the same form factor as the octatrack…so an excellent candidate for the riser. I’m controlling all 12 tracks on my syntakt on one scene and 8 octa and 4 digi channels on another scene. I customized the push encoder to send cc61 back to the octatrack to push its settings. Using a blokas midihub to make this all work.

Dave Kopecek

I've got an Arturia Keylab MKII & would love to work the keyboard controller into the setup. Eight channels with encoder, slider & with map nicely to the OT,the perfomance pads for some MPC-like action & transport controls. So far I've used the Keylab to play outboard gear into the "melodic" side of the template but haven't gotten much beyond that. Interested in live looping on the OT, then using the template to munch things up. I'd love to hear what others are doing with more traditional keyboard controllers.

Andreas Tilliander

Yes! I remember when my old and fantastic friend Daniel Troberg showed up before a show of mine showing me the Octatrack. Back then I toured with the MPC-4000 and seeing and hearing the Octatrack, I knew it was a game changer. 12 years later and there's still nothing that even comes close to it.

ezbot

What a great story! I met Daniel on Elektronauts just before he left for ASM. We traded a bunch of gear. He said he worked at Elektron and I was like “yeah right.” Then I looked him up and was like oh snap this guy is the CEO!

Mark Harris

Yeah love mine … takes a bit of setting up, but once done it’s great. I’m working on a special project for it too ;)

Jeroen

I pre-ordered the E1 and my first setup is a combined control of my mixer (TX-6, which is tiny so the larger controls come in handy), some synth parameters and some basic OT control (play/stop, scene selection, crossfader). What is nice is that for instance with a CC where you have, say, 16 options (divided in 127 steps) the screen can show you exactly which one you have selected, which you couldn’t do on a controller without a screen.

ezbot

SHIK MIDI controller! :) it’s great
