It's time to learn a blues ballad, and there's no better place to start than on the Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac classic; Need Your Love So Bad. This slow and dreamy, Ray Charles style 12/8 tune in the key of A major, contains essential elements of both blues and jazz. I IV V and I vi ii V.

In this chord study we'll look at a couple of ways to lay down the changes. From a Motown soul style including a handful of in the pocket "Hendrix-isms", to a more gentle approach focusing on beautiful inversions, voice leading and picking accuracy.

You'll come away from this lesson with a ton of new ideas to throw into your chord work.

John Olenski

I'm going to put on the kettle and settle in for this. cheers

Andrew Blackard

Wow, Alex. This is fantastic. As I'm sure you know that B B King said Green's version of this song brought tears to his eyes. What a classic and your rhythm variations are lovely. Question: Is the I-IV-I-V turnaround unique to the 12/8 slow blues?

David Lemon

Wow epic two-minute countdown video. I was captivated 🤩 Now on to the main production 🙌🏻

Bill Clark

Great lesson. I spend hours, then days, then weeks revisiting your lessons. They have helped me immensely.

Tyrone Miller

Always look forward to ur arrangements an ideas. Never disappoint my expectations 👍👍👍

Tony Davies

Love your blues lessons 😍

Ken Clarkson

One of my all time favorites and doable for a none expert like myself. Thanks Alex.

Mats Karpestam

Love this one. Used to teach this to my guitar students!

Marinho Del Santo

It's a delicious Blues groove!!!...and an excellent explanation of why it sounds so good. Thank you, Alex!!!

Matthew Casey

Great! 2 for one and probably several more, but you can play John Mayer’s “I’m gonna find another you” almost chord by chord. This gives some extra options as well. Thanks

MarkF

This was a bit of a sneaky lesson as it is actually very sophisticated material. When I first heard it I thought ok no biggy, but when you pay attention it’s not so simple. Lots to learn here as usual thanks Alex.

Jason Sheriff

Just keeps getting better Alex - brilliant stuff. Nothing better online as far as I'm concerned.

Stephen

Thank you so much, love this, I'm a fairly new subscriber and have just been dipping my toe in a bit random across the lessons, but I'm going to focus on this for a good bit. I've just been using some of the ideas also to play with Jason Isbel's sublime Hurricanes and Hand Grenades, which has a similar feel and chord structure to Need Your Love So Bad. On that note, there's probably a rich vein of lessons in Jason Isbell and Sadler Vaden's styles if you're a fan also at all!

Beat

simply great! the choice of songs, the arrangement and the way you play and communicate. big fan!

Mike Parry

I have no sound on my Guitar pro file.

Alex Farran Guitar

Just make sure you turn the volume slider up in the “mixer” section of guitar pro. I turn it down so that the embedded “real” audio file is heard rather than the midi sound.

Alex Farran Guitar

Great stuff Stephen, thanks for the kind words! Ah yes, I dig Jason Isbell.. saw him playing with the Drive By Truckers many years back! Will add him to the lessons list! ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Anytime Mark, glad you're digging in deep with these lessons to get their full nutritional value! ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

Interesting! Not familiar with that tune but will give it a listen!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Andrew, really glad you enjoyed it! That particular turnaround is common in any flavour of the blues, no matter the feel or tempo. A good one to practice in all scenarios!

William Laven

I can't remember, will you do a lead lesson on Need Your Love So Bad?

William Laven

I can't remember, will you do a lease lesson on Need Your Love So Bad, too.? Love the rhythm lesson, thanks.

Alex Farran Guitar

Indeed! I'll be filming that one pretty soon! Will be a good lesson on Major Pentatonic ideas ;)

Stephen

I saw him in Edinburgh a few months ago, simply superb, incredible musicianship, strongly recommend if you get a chance to see him in the future!

Stephen

And Jason Isbell's Hurricanes and Hand Grenades, pretty much chord by chord the same but still a different and gorgeous song!

David Lockwood

Great lesson Alex. I am using this chord study as relief from, practicing improvisation. Love the chords and passing notes. Very enjoyable to learn and to play!!

Rupert Hawkes

Hey Alex do you have backing track without the guitar thanks

Rupert Hawkes

On mine the track was muted, unmute and should work

Mike Parry

Thank you, my sound problem is now resolved.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Rupert, there is no backing track to this one, just the single guitar that you're hearing me play live in the opening performance. I'll make a full backing track for the lead study that'll follow in the near future though. Cheers!

elizabeth Marasco

do you have lessons on these songs: All Blues Billie’s Bounce Birk’s Works Blue Monk C Jam Blues Footprints Freddie Freeloader Mr P.C. Now’s the time Straight, No Chaser Watermelon Man

Stephen

Just a question on this one regarding when it goes to the B - in other versions I have mostly seen this as using a B major rather than the minor used here. The minor clearly works, I don't know a lot about harmony and am curious - are the other places wrong, or is it one of these places where harmonically both the major and minor are possible?

Alex Farran Guitar

The original versions have the B minor, (which is technically "correct" in relation to the key), but you can always play around with changing the chord quality from minor to major and dominant 7th etc, this is very common in jazz of course.

Stephen

Brilliant, thank you Alex!

Frank Gemein

Thank you for this lesson. Playing clean tones with these chords is sure something I have neglected practising for quite a while. The collection of influences you've chosen for this lesson again is of phenomenal taste!

Alex Farran Guitar

Ah thank you Frank, I really appreciate the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the lesson :)

David Lockwood

This is a great lesson Alex i keep going back to it to play along to for the timing! i must do the lead study soon.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, would be nice to get both this and the lead study down ;)

Stephen

Thank you - I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson! I love these kinds of lessons where I can play by myself at my own pace and it still sounds pretty decent even at a slow tempo. Great for motivation!

jose garcia

First of all thank you for YOUR lessons, i have learned with you in a few months what i have in years. Could you please help with the structure of the original, where shoul i use each part you have learned us in this lesson. Once again thank you very much.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Jose, I’m so happy to hear that my friend! So, the parts I’m playing here would fit in any of the verses, (so 80% of the song essentially). I didn’t do the progression for the bridge yet but will add that at some point in future.

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m so glad to hear that Charlie, thanks for the comment buddy 🙏🏻

Jonathan Hubbard

Just going back through your lessons to this one and it’s companion. Such good lessons - really inspiring but also with your teaching achievable. Love the style and content of all your work - thank you

jose garcia

Hi Alex , wonderful tune , enjoing your lesson so much. Will it be possible to learn the chorus? In the turnaround is it a Dminor or D#minor?

jose garcia

Sorry Alex , I’ll rephrase the comment . I was thinking about D flat minor. And if you are thinking about making the bridge and verse ?

jose garcia

Hi Alex , I’m sorry I feel ashamed , I found out , it’s a Dminor with bass in F.
