One seriously twangy lick for each of the five "CAGED" shapes, played over a travis picked D major chord vamp.

We throw as many classic, old school country guitar tricks in as possible for this one, from pedal steel pickup lines and bends, to chicken picking and double stops! A good little technical workout as well as a tour through the most used fretboard organisational system!

Tremendous stuff as always, Alex. Thank you!

JonB

Very nice - tasteful and useful.. Might try incorporating a couple of these into Bluegrass Stomp - Bill Monroe. A fun one and backing tracks available on YouTube. As to telecaster exponents one could check out Roy Bucannan. I see there is a PBS Documentary - The World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist" - 1971.

Love all the lessons but this is my favourite style. As soon as I saw the words CAGED and Country I got excited..... fantastic lesson, top man!

Thought it couldn’t get any better than last week’s lesson but it has!

Guy Roberts

Great! Your video library has become my go to for organizing my playing.

larry

Just absolutely fun licks, thank you!

Robert Oot

Another great set of contextually located licks. I had only just “mastered” the first two of last weeks posting before this landed.

David Lemon

Alex, side note of appreciation: I love that you thought to illustrate each CAGED shape ahead/atop of each separate bar on the transcription sheet.

That's a great idea Jon! I've not seen that documentary, but I'll certainly look into it.. always loved Roy's playing and searing tone!

Ran Bush

JonB - there is also the film "Anacostia Delta: Home of the World's Great 'Unknown' Guitarists” that features a bunch of local guys that used to play in the Danny Gatton era. Commentary includes Roy stories I believe, and lots of live jamming in a tribute concert. Thanks for the reminder of "Bluegrass Stomp”, a lot of bands tear that one up.

Thank you Robert, glad you enjoyed it! Move through the lessons in your own time, no rush my friend!

Being perpetually behind I'm only just getting to this, but I'm committing to 1 lick a day this week. Not sure if I'm going to make it though. The stretching is hard for my merely normal sized hand and I'm afraid I'm going to sprain a finger. I may have to get a guitar with a short scale neck!
