A serious lesson for serious guitarists: This weekend we focus our attention on one of my favourite tools.. low string triads.. Extremely useful, no.. ESSENTIAL for any lead guitar player who wonders what they should be doing when they’re not soloing!

These things are criminally under-used, with many people not seeing the value in even learning them at all! But for me, they are a MUST HAVE sound to have under your fingers. They can provide so much rich texture to your lead parts, and are downright magical for crafting subtle, complimentary parts to basic chord progressions.

In this case we’re playing a simple gospel-blues flavoured progression in the key of D and exploring just how atmospheric these low string triads and spread triads can sound.

I look forward to practicing such inversions. I love the deep, "bassy" sound—it's very soulfull...

Johan

Thank you for kicking my Saturday off on the right foot!

David Lockwood

Thank you Alex. A great lesson again. Very interesting!

stan peek

This is top shelf - Thanks!

Rick

Thank You! more fuel for thought.my youtube chain is a spark40 amp with Sure headphones and old 335 all dials at 9 o'clock and selector on Metal = unbelievable sound and good neck for less hand fatigue. Guitar set up by Larry Cragg perfect (Neal Youngs tec.) Cheers

Joe DiMeo

Sooooooo great! Thank you!

MarkF

Beautiful lesson thanks Alex. Your playing is so captivating to me, never sounds rushed or lazy, just right for what you are delivering-amazing.

Paul Hodgson

Great lesson as always! The opening reminds me of an instrumental version of "before the throne of God" by Jason Truby, who previously played in bands like Living Sacrifice and POD. And also, my band is currently working on a song with a chorus of Bm G A Bm, so this lesson comes at the perfect time :)

Ron Bogdanoff

I am always amazed on how you get these beautiful sounds out of triads. Has been a challenge for me, I learned drop 2's and 3's originally (long ago as a teen instructor said since I was interested in Bill Evans, we will start with extended chords and voice leading) so these triad based lessons are all new stuff for me. Thanks again for a great lesson where I am learning new things!

Andre Hessels

This is great. Is this also based on the Time out of my Mind sound from the Dylan album?

Benjamin J Bilow

Nice lesson Alex! Love the rich sounds. What’s a good example in the wild? Any songs, albums, or guitar players to listen to for this kind of playing?

mardin56

Great fun, thanks. Really like the suggestion to use a Beatles songbook and play only low triads. Makes great songs sound... still great!

Alex Farran Guitar

Hmmm, that's a good question! You'll hear these things used a lot by the likes of Marc Ribot, Adam Levy, Julian Lage and Jim Campilongo. One song that immediately springs to mind is "Blues for Roy" by Jim Campilongo.

David C

I am amazed at your right hand technique. It's as if the strings just whisper and moan with your light touch. Your left hand work is equally mind boggling. Your lesson, Sleep Walk has such beautiful bends and releases that are just exquisite. And don't get me started on your rhythm work. Thanks so much for sharing your talents.

Alex Farran Guitar

That's great to hear Ron, always worth taking a deep look into triads and the amazing things they can offer!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Andre! No not based on it on purpose, but I'm sure that album influences most of the things I play somehow!

Alex Farran Guitar

Very nicely done Nick, and lovely Nachocaster you have there my friend! 👌🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

Sorry I missed this lovely comment David, but thank you! You made my day! Glad you enjoy my lessons so much my friend 🙏🏻

Alex Halliday

I love this Alex. Just a quick question about the right hand, sorry if Ive missed something. Are you playing with pick on the single notes and pinching the chords with fingers?

Alex Farran Guitar

Yes indeed, hybrid picking on this one, but you can do it anyway that you prefer. I love the tone and feel of hybrid picking and use it maybe 75% of the time. On 3 string shapes I'm using the pick on the lowest string and the fingers simultaneously on the upper 2 notes.

Alex Halliday

I must apologise Alex, you do explain this very clearly in the 2nd half of the lesson. I hadn't reached that section, hence my question. All the best.
