We get back to some good old swing guitar in today's lesson.. something that's sure to put a smile on your face!

Western Swing, Gypsy Jazz, Pre-War Swing and 1920's Ragtime.. we blend all of those flavours to create a chord melody arrangement that bounces along at quite a trot, with plenty of playful little flourishes thrown in. I'll also teach you my chord accompaniment for this piece, which is full of authentic voicings and classic movements.

This turned out to be a long lesson, but I'm certain that you'll have plenty to take away from it and work on! Let me know what you think down in the comments below!

Rick

Thanks Alex, swing is so cool.Great lesson,I'm not keeping up very well at 74 I'm happy to still have dexterity but less memory, just have to keep on it.Thank You

Julian Gross

great lesson. (had to go back and listen for the pheasants)

Larry Coelho

Wow, really outstanding 👏 love it!

Thomas

Once again thank you Alex, I love it. Like Rick, at 72 I have lost grip and dexterity, but in my head I am still a pup. I chase your lessons like it were a green tennis ball every time.

John Rhodes

Yeah I know what I'm going to be up to for quite awhile now!😁 thanks!

larry lenhart

This is a great arrangement and i too like the quebe sisters version....i have played this tune Merle Travis style for years and now will enjoy adding your arrangement to it...thanks great job as always. I am 80 and still learning new stuff every day.

JonB

So cool. Now I'm jonesing for a C6 lap steel for backup (probably not - well, you never know?). A nod and wink to those other old dogs out there still picking & strumming.

Ron Culbertson

I will never make another comment about my age. I didn’t realize so many old guys we’re in the school. Fact is we still love the music, love to hear Alex play and love to learn new things. Thanks again.

Beautiful this lesson screams for my Eastman AR805. I look forward to getting this lesson under my fingers. Epic teaching sir.

Nat Meacham

Really good one. Very timely for me, too. I've been dusting off my 16" Gibson-made Recording King archtop from the 40s in anticipation of a show for which I'm under-practiced. There's a relative bargain: 40s, U.S., not-quite-top-of-the-line archtops. Some are duds, and most might need a little work, but they can be had for less than $2000 still. I sure appreciate the level of explanatory detail and the work that went into this lesson.

Chris

Hey Alex, that was so much fun! Thank you for these detailed lessons. Keep it up!

Joseph Corso

Once again absolute mastery my friend...incredible wealth of knowledge here ...Have not moved from my chair ...Thank you again I am a better and smarter player after this epic lesson ...

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Rick, glad you enjoyed it! Some of these shapes and moves are pretty demanding on the fingers, so just take it slow and enjoy the beautiful sounds. No need to play it fast at all!

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha I love to hear that Thomas, I think that's by far the most important attribute any guitarist can have.. the hunger and desire to keep pushing!

Alex Farran Guitar

That'd be lovely Jon, I do have a lap steel here but it barely get's played nowadays!

Alex Farran Guitar

That's it Ron! Most of my students over the years fall into the retired and older camp for sure! Like I said to Thomas, I believe the most important attribute any guitarist can have is the hunger for learning and the desire to keep pushing themselves. It's fantastic!

Alex Farran Guitar

Haha .. they didn't come through on the mic much at all.. but it was VERY loud in the room!

Alex Farran Guitar

That's awesome Larry, I bet it sounds great fingerstyle! Would be interested to hear that!

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh that's interesting Nat, I'll check those out too.. thanks for the info!
