Gypsy Jazz Lesson: Douce Ambiance by Django Reinhardt. Ep1; Chords Galore! Spicy Rhythm Guitar!

*NEW! Access all lesson materials by becoming a Patreon at the link below for just a small monthly fee!.. https://patreon.com/AlexFarranGuitar If Patreon isn’t your bag, you can purchase the lesson materials for this lesson alone, directly at the link below; https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/agxfl Today we will tackle the chords for Django's fantastic "Douce Ambiance". This progression is full of really useful chord runs, inversions and walking bass lines.. all essential elements for that authentic pre-bop swing sound. One thing I forgot to mention is that in the lesson materials I’ve included a transcription of the melody, plus Django’s fantastic 2 chorus solo (that we’ll look at in detail in the next lesson). I’d always recommend learning the basic melody so that you can play the “head” of the tune effectively. I would highly recommend downloading the lesson materials provided at the link above.. all of the topics covered in this lesson are typed up nice and neat and provided in both guitar pro and PDF formats. Having these to hand whilst following along with the video will certainly make things much easier to absorb. Thanks for watching and please do leave a comment down below, and if you could hit the like button and subscribe to my channel, that would really be so appreciated. I could listen to a whole album of this sort of stuff. This and your tele solo of this song on your YouTube channel are a joy to listen to. I don’t know many people playing electric gypsy music like you. I’ve wondered why Brian Setzer never did a gypsy album especially since caravan was such a great hit for him. Also I wonder why Joscho Stephan doesn’t do rockabilly. It seems like gypsy jazz and rockabily (and even surf guitar) have a lot of overlap. And your renditions seem to explore this ven-diagram crossover arena and it’s great!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you so much Raymond!.. very kind of you to say! 🙏🏻 I’m totally with you.. I find a lot of these styles are very closely related, and sometimes all it takes is a change of outfit to define one from another 😂

Gert De Groof

So good man! But…I came here from the minor swing lesson where you refer to this lesson where you suppose to go deeper into the ‘la pompe’ rhythm…but you kinda explain it the same way here. I kinda get it, but I might have to hold you up on the suggestion you make in this video to do a dedicated lesson…what say you, master?

Gert De Groof

Hey Alex, just revisited this excellent lesson, really getting the hang of it. But I was wondering wether you already did the follow up (solo), can’t seem to find it. Cheers

Alex Farran Guitar

Oh hold on.. on further inspection, it doesn’t appear that I put it up on the Patreon yet! 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’ll put it up in a couple of days so as not to confuse the feed when today’s lesson(s) drop 😉 In the mean time, I’ll email the lesson materials to you directly 👍🏻

Gert De Groof

Great, not in a hurry, plenty to do 😀 thanks

Alex Farran Guitar

No worries at all. Just emailed you. It’s the same lesson pack zip file download as this one, (I included lead and chord work under one file for this lesson). 👍🏻

Thank you Alex. This is a great lesson. Could I please get the PDFs for the lead lesson? It is not within this PDF. I have the July 15 2023 YouTube link for the solo study. Keep up the great work. Appreciate all your lessons. Cheers.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hey buddy, glad you enjoyed the lesson! All of the materials you need are in that zip file. The melody is labelled “the head”, you also have PDF’s for “Django’s solo” and “chordwork”. As well as guitar pro files for all of these same components. There are 10 files in that zip folder in total. Let me know how you get on matey. Also, just incase you’ve not seen it, here’s my YouTube lesson breaking down Django’s solo in detail; https://youtu.be/O4-GazTA-gg?si=0mg1KUn2JYUGjTQn

It is all there. Thank you and happy new year.

Hi Alex, I'm a new patron member. Been meaning to learn jazz, gypsy jazz and country guitar for a long time and your lessons are brilliant, plus the PDFs for everything are so helpful. Anyway, my actual question is what guitar are you playing in this Django video? And have you done a breakdown video of your guitars? Would love to see all those axes..! Cheers mate, Mark.

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi Mark, apologies for only just spotting this comment! I'm using my 1953 Gibson es125 in this video. It suits the swing style so well and the P90 pickup is a beast! I've not actually done a guitar collection/gear video but will put it on the "to-do" list! Thanks buddy
