Hehehe - do this in my country band but they based it on the br459 version. I found this and started learning it as a more swing based solo. Brilliant timing :)

Alex Farran Guitar

Very cool Trevor!.. I’d not heard that version before.. just checked it out and it seems a fun take on it! 👌🏻

Trevor Grant

Yeah - a tad more rock n roll. Newly joined the band and it’s sort of classic country plus some western swing. Which has meant some woodshedding to get back up to speed. Your stuff has been huge help. Have you come across Dave stuckey? His version of nobodies sweetheart is blinding.

Alex Farran Guitar

That sounds great dude!.. love that blend of western swing, old country and rock n’ roll! 👌🏻🔥 Will check Dave Stuckey out.. thanks for the info recommendation 🍻

I think this is going to take me a good while to digest the lesson and the lessons within the lesson but ready to get going. Thanks for another gem.

Gert De Groof

Sounds absolutely delicious! Unfortunately I don’t always have the time to keep up with your posting pace (also still catching up on posts from before I joined, and lots of new things to learn) But this will definitely be added on the ‘to do’ list. Absolutely love it! Now back to CC, paging the devil 😀

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Gert!.. no rush, just take your time and tackle the lessons in any order that takes your fancy 👍🏻

Alex Farran Guitar

My pleasure Mark!.. amazing how many hidden gems there are to pick from a piece like this. Just take your time and you’ll gradually absorb the stuff 👌🏻

George Nichols

Love the explanation.it helps me also to know the scale shape being used.

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m so glad to hear the explanation helps, thanks for commenting George 🙏🏻

Rob Brazier

Loved this lesson. Thank you! Still working on my tremolo strumming. I'll get it eventually!

George Nichols

Are you going to tab part 2 of Honky Tonk?

Alex Farran Guitar

Hi George, Honky Tonk Pt.2 doesn’t really contain much guitar aside from the 12 bar shuffle behind the sax solo.. or did you mean transcribe the sax solo for guitar?

George Nichols

Sax part might be cool to do on guitar

TinchoLegarra

I really enjoy this lesson Alex thanks! It's quite hard for me the tremolo picking whit 2 strings on the part B. I have to find a good technique!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Martin, glad to hear you’re enjoying working on it. Yes, the tremolo picking technique is very hard and requires plenty of regular work. Make sure to keep your wrist totally loose 👍🏻

I joined only recently so I hadn't had the opportunity to comment on this lesson until now. I became aware of Bill Doggett like many others because of this tune. This instrumental was played on the radio for many years. I was lucky enough to see the shuffle master here in Detroit at the 15th Annual Montreaux Detroit Jazz Festival in 1994 on the Pyramid Stage, 2 years before he died. The man and his groove was electric. Awesome post!!

Alex Farran Guitar

That’s so cool! Thanks for sharing Paul! Glad you enjoyed the post 🙏🏻🍻

I learned this Honky Tonk from a Ventures album over 60 years ago...I play it in E....this version opens up some more variations and interesting licks that I hadnt heard (the Ventures didnt do it that way...haha) thanks for posting this and giving me more inspiration !

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Larry, glad you enjoyed the lesson! Interesting that you play it in E.. I’m sure that works out great too! 👌🏻

This is the first song I have learned from start to finish. Thanks! I first heard this on KKUP FM, which is the coolest radio station. I've been a listener for 15 years. They stream online, and are worth checking out.
