Gideon Marriott

It’s great thank you Alex. Going to need a couple re-watches but so far explaining the context of some shapes Ive used in the past.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Gideon, glad you enjoyed it. There’ll be more parts coming in future looking at the other applications of diminished.. but I feel this is an important primer lesson. 🙏🏻

DENNIS CHUGH

Great summary, lots of information here. I love the way you bring it around to the ii-V7-I chord progression so that there is some practicality in terms of making music. Thank you!

Anthony Calcaterra

Excellent lesson! I like the Beatles version of Till There Was You, you can hear them play the F# Dim in minor thirds. Very cool sound.

Alex Farran Guitar

Louis says “hi” back! (I think that’s what it translated to anyway! 🤷🏻‍♂️😆)

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Anthony!.. ah yes, I love George’s solo on that. May do a lesson on it at some point. “Michelle” also has the diminished up and down in minor thirds trick 👌🏻

MarkF

This had the proverbial lightbulb moment in it for me -I now have a better understanding for applying the diminished chord especially with its inversion back to the 1 chord-love that sound.

Alex Farran Guitar

I’m so glad to hear that Mark.. that’s what it’s all about. Finding lovely new ways to get from one chord to another 👌🏻 Thanks for the comment ☺️

Rob Brazier

After receiving the notification, I practically ran to the computer to watch! Outstanding lesson. Thank you! Would love to hear in follow up posts your tips on how to practice these ideas so they become a natural part of your musical vocab.

Alex Farran Guitar

in terms of ways to practice it, I'd recommend just over-using it for a while and throw it in on practically every dominant chord you encounter!.. just remember to build the diminished off the 3rd, 5th, b7 or b9 of the Dominant chord ;)

Alex Farran Guitar

ah that's so good to hear!.. thank you my friend, I really appreciate that 🙏🏻 I'm thinking of making this a part 1 with a few follow up videos for sure.. so many ways to apply the diminished.

Julian Gross

this is great, I sometimes see the topics and go Oh I know that already, but then I watch the vid and always learn a ton. I use the diminished constantly - probably overuse it -- but this lesson opened up how nice it can sound in conjunction with some thoughtful voicings of the ii and the I.

Julian Gross

look forward to going through the materials and getting all these gorgeous progressions under my fingers

Trevor Grant

Just been learning some ways to solo across this - check out swing like this by Ty England. Just t’sc the intro and solo. Feel sympathy for the pedal steel player. He’s got to do the intro on steel!

Gert De Groof

Brilliant…context is everything. Great idea to thoroughly get into the V(b9)-I . Exploring all these possibilities really make this way of using the diminished chord sink in. Looking forward to the follow up. Thanks man. Take care.

Alex Farran Guitar

Thanks Gert.. very glad you enjoyed the lesson. I always appreciate your comments my friend :)
