Hi guys,

This week we have a quick fire lesson on this gorgeous Ted Greene Christmas arrangement. Different to most lessons, this one has me "thinking out loud" and doing a little harmonic analysis which I hope you find interesting in terms of how to name chords and understand their function.

There are some amazing Bach-like moves and counterpoint lines thrown in to this one, and surprisingly a fair amount of ii-V-I vocabulary!

I know I already gave you my transcription for this piece a couple of weeks back, but you'll find the new files attached to this post have the chord names included also.. always useful to be able to understand the fabric of the music.

Merry Christmas to all of you wonderful Patrons, I can't even begin to express how thankful I am for your support and constant enthusiasm. 2024 will be very exciting I can assure you! ;)

P.S: I'll see you guys on Christmas Day for a little Patreon bonus post 🍻🎄

Ha, great! Another TG workout-session; time to get my left hand out of the ice-bucket again ;-)

I can’t thank you enough for exposing me to Ted Greene. These arrangements are lovely. Have Yourself a Merry Christmas is kicking my butt. However the voicings are beautiful. I play them over and over and vary the timing with regard to arpeggiation. The more I learn, the faster I learn new ones. They make sense to me. I’ve watched several videos of him with students. He opening my guitar mind. Chord melody, that’s what I want to do when I grow up.

Love it! It’s cool to learn these Christmas classics because the melody is so burned into my mind that it gives me an anchor and a bit of wiggle room while I get new chord voicings under my fingers. Thanks Alex!!

That’s a great point Mark.. you certainly get more “time on the ball” when you already know the melody so well 👍🏻

Amazing comment Paul!.. I’m so happy to hear you’re inspired by the Ted Greene stuff! I plan to do many more Ted Greene related videos. Also, in all of my chord melody videos, you’ll notice elements of his style in there as he had such a profound influence on my playing too. He was THE man 👌🏻

Merry Christmas, Alex. I’ve only been on your channel for a few weeks, but it’s already provided a wealth of information and so much enjoyment. Hope you have a great holiday!

Thank you Jimmy, I’m so glad to hear that 🙏🏻 Merry Christmas my friend 🎄🍻

Hey Alex, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is going to take me many hours to learn properly. Fantastic arrangement a musical cornucopia! Your video really got me going on it. Along with learning the notes and chords is the importance of playing with conviction. How does one want the notes to sound and so on. My next assay will be Waltz for Django, which plays in my head all day long. Gotta do a private lesson sometime soon if I can keep the practice schedule going. As always, great stuff, the performances, the analysis and the lessons. Happy Christmas! 👍🎼

Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄Thank you all so very much for supporting Alex and his endeavor. It’s a good thing. His devotion to his art and to this miraculous instrument is obvious. His dedication to share this enthusiasm through the highest quality presentations and lessons is a gateway to magical, musical realms to explore in the new year!

Ah thank you so much Paul, I really appreciate that comment, and your amazing, enthusiastic support! I'm looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings!.. one thing is for certain, the weekly lessons will continue and the quality (hopefully) will improve with each and every one. Thanks again for being here my friend and Merry Christmas 🙏🏻🎄

Thank you for the comment Guy, I'm so glad you feel inspired by the lessons! That chord melody is a tricky one, and as you say, learning the chords is just the start.. eventually you'll be thinking about the feel, tone, and clarity of those beautiful things. Waltz for Django is a great project, do let me know how you get along with it.. and sure, if you fancy booking some private lessons, you know where to find me! Have a great New year my friend! :)
