I first learned this one at least 10 years ago, and it still remains a favourite piece to rattle through on the acoustic guitar. A beautiful solo arrangement of the Chet Atkins tune.

I hope that some of you make the same connection with it and add it to your life-long repertoire too! ;)

Mountains of Illinois - Chet Atkins/Pat Bergeson/Tommy Emmanuel (Martin HD28v)

Click below to get my full transcription for this piece; https://smogfalls.gumroad.com/l/sgqxv A beautiful composition by Pat Bergeson/Chet Atkins, and arranged by Tommy Emmanuel. This piece is played tunes down a whole step on my Martin HD28v. Although I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with stereo mics lately, I opted for a single mono approach for this one. The fantastic “O.P.R Pill 4038” ribbon mic stepped up to the task and delivered a huge tone! I love this thing! Do check out the Open Plan Recording (O.P.R) microphones.. they’re all extremely high quality, hand built microphones from Australia. Based on classic vintage mic designs and full of character: https://www.openplanrecording.com If you’d like to support the work I do, feel free to buy me a coffee at this link; https://www.buymeacoffee.com/alexfarran I post most days on insta: https://www.instagram.com/alexfarranguitar --- #guitar #guitarist #acousticguitar #music #musician #jazz #blues #country #chetatkins #tommyemmanuel #cgp #martinguitar #martinhd28v #universalaudio #homestudio #vintageguitar #guitarsolo #folk #folksong

🙏🏻Thanks Mark! I'd 100% recommend putting in the time to learn this one. It's good for the soul 🧡

I love the swinging gospel walks.

Beautiful sound on that HD28! Are you doing anything to sweeten the recording, or is it just a great resonant guitar? Love the way the harmonics ring out at the end!

Alex Farran Guitar

Thank you Jonathan 🙏🏻 I applied some extremely light EQ and compression, as well as a touch of short, room reverb. It genuinely is just a very resonant and rich sounding guitar though. It’s the reason I initially fell in love with it even though I was only “borrowing” it at the time.. I just had to have it in the end! 😂

Glorious! Thanks for sharing Alex.

Hans
