Today we learn a beautifully simple, yet melodic chord melody arrangement for the gorgeous jazz standard "It Could Happen to You". We're playing this in the key of Chet Baker's version; G Major. If you've seen my "Jazz Survival Guide" video, this would be a great way to put those shapes to use and further embed them into your muscle memory.

** Apologies for the autofocus issues that plague the final third of this video.. I've since figured things out and have switched to manual focus so this will never be an issue in future videos. I appreciate your patience while I learn the ropes with this stuff!

Couldn’t have asked for a more perfect chord melody lesson just beautiful and presented so well you really are doing great work Alex and we appreciate it. Chet Baker could just work that major scale like no one else lyrical and melancholy and story telling from a few notes. Great docs on Chet he lived a life.

This is so instructive and connection-revealing. And really very pretty. Thanks for noting the strings used.

My pleasure Nat, I'm glad you feel that way. I was hoping this would be a nice place to apply the "jazz survival guide" knowledge 🙂

Thank you so much Mark! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! He certainly did live a life!.. full of twists and turns. What an inspiring musician though. 👌🏻

Hey Alex, what would be a good alternative for the F9#11/C in bar 10? No matter how hard I try, I can’t do it. I can hardly put my thumb over for the E string, let alone grabbing the A string as wel…or I drop the maj3 or the #11 in the proces trying…these thumb over chords really bum me out. I’m not really sure if practice will get me there, or if it is just a matter of wrong guitar or unfortunate physical measurements.

Gert De Groof

Oh…it’s the chord in the lesson thumbnail…thanks for rubbing it in 🤣

No worries at all Gert, I've just typed up a few alternative options for you and added the files to the downloads above. As you'll see, the options go from difficult to easy and they all sound absolutely beautiful so you cannot go wrong with any of them. Hope this helps! :)

Is there a reason to play this one with a pick/plectrum as opposed to finger style? I just wrapped up the unaccompanied Delta Blues lesson, and have a nice rhythm going with the fingers... Beautiful & challenging lesson, thank you!
