Thanks for your reactions Luke, I love your open emotional experience with each anime but anime like YLIA make me appreciate it even more. I hope some day you watch Anohona, Plastic Memories and Clannad/After Story when you have time. I will continue to wait and support till I see all the reactions.

I wouldn't say that the mother was intentionally being abusive while sick, she may not have even known it was happening as strange as it may sound and I speak from experience. My own mom became quite ill with debilitating neurological and nerve related issues when I was just 9 years old - prior to this she was the sweetest, kindest, quirkiest person; but as the illness progressed she stopped being herself. A combination of the pain and drugs would sometimes put her in some sort of psychosis where she became a completely different person - lashing out, screaming, crying, all an outlet that her brain was trying to use to make the pain go away. While she never hit me or my sisters, the distance that grew may as well have been an abuse and when paired with her verbal outbursts and us being that young and witnessing it... it hurts your own perception of whats right and wrong because the person who is supposed to tell you is quite literally out of their right mind and the impressionable you is lost and scared. Her pain never got better, her psychosis worsened, she turned to... less than legal coping mechanisms... and those eventually took her from us. I was 12 when that happened. Abuse comes in many forms and I know that you don't like to talk about your past when you don't have to but I know that the father you are today is shaped by what you experienced with the mission that your boys never experience a fraction of what you did... and we all believe thats true while our minds are still whole. But when illness and pain break us down to nothing, when our brains become so twisted from the torture that we lose who we are and aren't even aware that its happening, what can you do? I've watched this series 3 times over the years and my takeaway with his mom is the same - the actions she took, the abuse she handed out, its all terrible and abhorrent, but the person doing the abuse isn't his mom, the person breaking this poor boy isn't his mom, its the shell of his mom whose once caring and sound mind has long since been replaced by psychosis from illness. What Kousei didn't know at the time was that when he wished his mom would just go ahead and die... she was already gone and likely had been for a while.

Orange is good but is really depressing imo. Maybe I watched it during a bad time in my life. Also WEP was really interesting until the final episode they made us wait 3 weeks for and it was half a recap and the other half was a horrible ending. They killed the whole vibe of the show with the last episode. I Never seen the 3rd one you mentioned.

not that it's forgivable to be oblivious to that, and we clearly saw other people including the one that was pushing her chair when she hit kousei, that they were telling her that "hey that's too much". I grew up in a third world country and over there, discipline IS something that can happen if someoen misbehaves, whether you believe in that or not, but even for that, she definitely crossed a line... buuuuuuttttttttt, that being said, i can't wait for luke to be hit with the story beat :). I won't say more.

I also own Kanon bc it is really good, I have watched Air but it isn't as good imo. It is like Charlotte tier. Still a good anime but I didn't get emotional over it.

yes yes you said what i was alluding to at the end of the last episode. i realized she is acting as a guardian angel. pushing and pulling kosuei into the light. dragging the music out of him. literally throwing him into the spotlight. whats that phrase somehting about not seeking greatness its thrust upon you or some such??? Its definitely given me a rethink watching the series again. overcoming the raw emotions from watching it the first time years ago and actively avoiding it until now.

Not saying I don't appreciate his reaction, as well as the validity of his thoughts and his input, genuinely I enjoy that people watch this anime and love it. Tho I wish people understood that illness and treatments can literally change a person's entire personality and that's not something to take lightly or one-sided.. We can literally see Kousei asking if his mom would forgive him, seeing his memories that she was a good person, but then he questions why Kousei feels that way.. Granted at this part of the anime, he may not fully understand or see it, but I hope he catches that as one of the many lessons this anime teaches..

WEP was an original. So it had real potential. I liked the story telling. Yes the last episode was a let down. But for me, it was of the execution of the episode that was bad. The general idea for the ending wasn't terrible imho. None the less, it was a botched ending, lol. Yes, Orange is clinical depression in anime form. lol Haibane Renmei is an older anime. Similar subject matter to WEP, but with just a sprinkle of Angel Beats. It's a story with a dark mystery element. Maybe Fuuka would be another good rec or even Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet. I guess it just depends on tastes.

I have seen Fuuka a couple of times, the anime was not as good as the manga bc the anime changed the ending. Charlotte, Angel Beats and all on Jun Maeda's list that were anime original were decent but I didn't think the endings were bad compared to WEP.
