2:43 Gary Oak (Professor Oak's grandson) is a minor character who appears very rarely in the anime.

What have you been doing all this time Luke? Are you not watching Pokemon with you sons?

Madara_Uchiha_2022

I prefer Pokémon in English because that’s just how I was bought up, I also prefer the openings and endings in English because to me, they sound much better in English than the Japanese version, especially for Pokémon Horizons, the openings for that series literally made me teared up just by how beautiful it sounds in English.

Madara_Uchiha_2022

And I’m glad that in the UK that all Pokémon DVDs and Netflix and BBC iPlayer has English as an original language because I cannot even stand the Japanese version for some reason, I don’t hate it but it’s just English makes it sound so much better.

Madara_Uchiha_2022

I know you’ll do the Japanese version, but please react to the Horizon series in English version as well, I just find it more beautiful and more soothing than the original version

Deiondre0

Pikachu’s VA is Ikue Ohtani and the dub decided not to change that. All of Pikachu’s lines are the same in both sub and dub

Lichmourne

It's wild that I had pokemon banned in my household growing up but I still know pretty much everything about it. How big was that rock you were living under? LMAO xD Edit: DOUBLING DOWN!

Emily Jewett

I think the movies could be worth a watch

Emily Jewett

The anime supports the games so a lot of the time the girl who travels with Ash (after misty) are representing the female character that is playable in the corresponding game.

Deiondre0

The dramatic change in art style is mostly because a new anime called Yo-Kai Watch became massively popular in the same target audience. Pokemon made the overall art style of future seasons softer and more comedic to compete with them

The Battle Frontier - Pokemon Podcast

FINALY!!! I've been waiting for your reaction and I really loved your take about how you didn't see pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh or bayblade as anime because to you as a kid as such was the case for a lot of people all those shows were simply cartoons, I myself watched a whole lot of shows I only learned they were anime after like 20 years or something and it really blew my mind. as for pokemon specific that was the first show I recognized as anime because that how that show was marketed in my country with the title of "the biggest hit anime from japan" so slowly I began grasping what is anime and what is not. I really like it if you could react to the pokemon movies, they are stand alone stories so you don't need any backstory and they are really good

Shin

Wait till I blow your mind with this one Luke. Pokemon. Poke. Mon. Poke = Pocket. Mon = Monsters. *Explosion noises* Insane revelation, I know

Plechtorix

You missed one of my favourite Pokemon JP opening. You missed the opening for Pokeon XY & Z it's really good have this rock vibe

D(e)adJoke

It would be really fun to do a gaming stream with Luke doing a Nuzlocke of a pokemon game

D(e)adJoke

I agree! I was waiting for that one because it's really, really great!

RealKOE

you missed pokemon xyz opening i hope you can make a separate video for the opening and maybe the full song

Yui

It doesn't feel like the last one because it wasn't. There was a special one for the last 10 episodes.

Krolliox

Pokemon is the only anime that the dub opening is way better than the Japanese opening, well, at least up until gen3 season, because from gen4 season of the dub openings for Pokemon are bad or just mid, that the Japanese opening are 100x better.

Yami Youssouf

New amq training session just dropped ty bossman

Anna

The Pokémon movies would be a great thing for you to watch, because they can be watched separate from the series stand-alones.

RayquazaKingdom

16:02 Absol's lore is that it's misunderstood. It tries to warn people about disasters before they happen, but was instead blamed for the disasters. One of my personal favorites, it's a very cool one, and I'm hoping its new Z-Mega is good in competitive. The song from the opening was also remixed and used in the english version of the Gen 3 series, retitled as "The Heroes of Hoenn." Another fave of mine. 18:57 Oh snap it's the one my username is after 19:40 The little kid is Max, May's little brother 25:10 yeah pretty much, the franchise is marketed towards kids so Ash is permanently 10. Directly conflicting this, there have been events that require a year to have passed, only for Ash to later be explicitly stated to still be 10 anyway lol 30:36 Palkia, the box art legendary of Pearl version. The "Blue dog thing" is Lucario, and then the other big blue thing is Dialga, from Diamond version. 30:57 You know what, it is just for visual effect, but now that reminds me of the giant poke balls for dynamaxing in sword and shield over 10 years later 36:53 Haxorus, a dragon type pokemon 40:30 yeah Sawk (and Throh) are not the most creative mons 46:20 Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. New Pokemon are actually the same as the old pokemon, some suck and others are awesome, and different people will have different preferences. 48:00 Pokemon World is roughly equivalent to our real world, and the new regions in every game are based on places. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are all Japan. Unova is New York - the UNited states OV America. Kalos from X&Y (The one you're currently on at this time stamp) is based on France. Next up, Alola is based on Hawaii (Hence the name being almost 'Aloha') and Galar, the final one Ash is in, is actually based on the UK! And I can't speak for other viewers but I'm not ripping my hair out at all, I'm just chilling while waiting for the VGC Finals at the Pokemon World Championships to start. 50:30 the kiki and bouba priciple 51:32 yes actually, he has. I would be spoiling a bit too much though to go into detail on what he has and hasn't accomplished at this point in the series. That said, I'm not sure I'd call him "Famous" at that point. 53:45 I don't know what the idea was but that opening is from one of the pokemon movies and not an actual season. not sure why it's there when it should be the XYZ opening. 55:47 The closest I'd say is XYZ, the one that this series of opening videos appears to have skipped lol 58:35 yeah I wasn't personally a fan of the animation change either 1:00:57 yep that's an eevee, it just has funny hair. Short clip of this exact eevee: https://youtube.com/shorts/pXEgTdwx8l4?si=7OzULW2nOM0_NnNc Immediately followed by Alolan Marowak. Sun and Moon introduced regional variants as a thing, and many of the original 151 kanto pokemon got Alolan forms. If you can get past the animation change, Sun and Moon was a pretty good series and the games were also pretty decent. 1:01:37 "Now we're in Spain!" (Actually in the country you're currently sitting in) Spain does actually come next though in Horizons. 1:07:51 yep, that's all 8 "Eeveelutions," with Espeon and Umbreon (The purple and black ones on the left) being my all time favorite Pokemon. 1:08:28 1,025 so far. Winds and Waves will be bringing many more next year, and some *may* actually be revealed tonight after the finals of the world championships ends. 1:12:18 If you watch again you'll see the moment from the very first episode where Ash meets Pikachu, and you'll see them traveling back to every region Ash has visited with past characters in the scenes. That said, it does lack a certain feeling that this is the end of Ash's journey. 1:15:40 I am indeed a little crazy

Sydney

I hope you will do the english versions too cause I prefer them

German4Media

So now we have reactions to the English songs without visuals and the Japanese songs with visuals, all that’s left is what everyone is waiting for, the English versions with visuals!!

Subaru130

Funny thing is, if anything, Ash actually gets younger throughout the series. He starts the series on his 10th birthday, and there was one movie short, I believe, where Ash and Pikachu celebrated one year since they started traveling together (AKA Ash's 11th birthday). However, later seasons still have Ash telling everyone that he's 10.

Joshua Nguyen

"Is Officer Jenny one of those 2 people" he say, and I go oh ho ho ho ho

Lia

The Pokémon anime had mostly happy and humoristic vibes, but it had some serious moments as well, with occasional dark topics like Pokémon abandonment or mistreatment. One of the first episodes of the show is Ash saving a Charmander from imminent death because his previous trainer abandoned him for being too weak, and he refused to move, believing his trainer would come back. I'd definitely recommand watching the movies, they're really great! Also, Pikachu as a species is not considered strong, but Ash's Pikachu's main feature is that he refuses to evolve and wants to grow stronger as he is, despite his evolved form being typically stronger. It's a bit of an "underdog becoming stronger through motivation and training" kind of trope!

Adam

I hope you do Pokemon Horizons as well, it has some of my all time favorite openings

Lia

Would be great to see you react to the Precure (Pretty Cure) openings as well! They're not very known outside of Japan but had some insane animation, even for a kid's show and for the time, and the openings are really fun to watch!

Danvi

Hmm... no definitely not, but i respect the opinion

Subaru130

Anime spoilers in case you care about that Yes, Ash does become very famous in-universe by the end. In his last series as protagonist, he literally becomes the World Champion, the No. 1 ranked trainer in the entire world. There was a short wrap-up series at the end where Ash got to travel with Misty and Brock again for a while, and at one point, a whole crowd of people were running up to him for autographs. However, Ash still doesn't believe that he has reached his ultimate goal of becoming a Pokemon Master. It's more of an immaterial thing that he'll always be chasing because to him, a Pokemon Master isn't just a very powerful trainer but also someone that's friends with all Pokemon.

AdrixelCV

Personally, i prefer the Japanese opening, the english dubs aren't really my thing

Asuna

Missed the best opening aka the XYZ opening

Juichiro

Pokemon Horizons OP pls

AdrixelCV

Long story short: Pokémon is heavily based in the videogames, in every game, you play in different places, called regions depending of the generation (Kanto is 1st generation, Sinnoh is 4th generation, Alola is 7th generation, etc?), and the anime covers 1 region/generation in a bunch of "seasons", example: Opening 1 and 2 covers Kanto, the first generation, and then from opening 5 to 10 covers Hoenn, the region from the 3rd generation, every Region/Generation has a standalone story, but still, there's continuity between seasons, (At least the majority), so... Just think of it as "Every time Ash changes his attires, it's a new region, and a new story"

Regi

Even though Pokemon is a tame anime most of the times, the sole fact that you are ao unaware of a lot of things of the Pokemon world and anime (like the objective in both the games and Ash's objectives overall) makes me want to ask you to watch the first season at least. Mostly as well because the first season is specially fun as Ash pretty much acts like a that with a bit of heart, and all the friends that accompany him end up following him out of debts he owes them or simply because they feel he might end up in trouble. Later on, Ash does show a bit more maturity and experience, until he finally achieve part of his goal of becoming the very best, like no one ever was. The Pokemon Master part of his goal, though, might be an unobtainable goal he will always pursue (even by the end of the last season, the last scene is just of Ash choosing a way to search for more adventures besides Pikachu)

Shock

The reason Ash/Satoshi never gets older is cause that was just mostly what a lot of anime born from the 90s did. i think case closed/detective conan does the same thing. however in the case of Pokemon's anime , its kinda a soft reboot every season ( or sometimes they have ofcourse multiple seasons that are kinda connected to one thing like black and white , diamond and pearl etc ) it does get messy cause sometimes older characters from previous seasons come back randomly. ash actually looks 10 years old in sun and moon going forward.and ash abandons most if not all his previous pokemon except for pikachu. This trend continued until the end of Pokemon journeys. now Ash/satoshi is no longer in the anime, neither are brock and misty. the whole formula has changed now and the main character even gets older, something ash/satoshi NEVER could.

Lucas Prestes

I read part of the reason they changed ashs design so much in later seasons was to compete with a very popular anime at the time called Yokai Watch, if you check it you will see the style is REALLY similar

Shock

Pikachu sounds similar to the english dub... cause it is the same in the english dub. most of the pokemon names are changed in the english version , for example , charizard's original name in japanese isn't even charizard, but lizardon ( lizard+dragon ) pikachu was iconic so was unchanged and also kept the same voice actress for most of the dubs ( if not all ) all the others were changed so obviously had to be recast. Without going into spoilers , You will hear the voice actress for Pikachu voice act at some point in One piece as a VERY iconic character for one piece. and people have probably already told you during your watch of naruto that she voices konohamaru.

charlymoon

I love opening 9 through 13

Jordan P

Besides XYZ, you did miss one last Japanese OP with Ash called "Mezase Pokemon Master: With My Friends". It's a remake of the first OP they played for the final episodes with Ash. It also got featured on First Take, which you actually reacted to. That's the one that actually gives a finality to Ash's arc.

Thine Tiny Equine

If you haven't go check the English versions of these. Totally different, I think they barely share visuals

Kas samo

next do the palworld opening

Illyasviel

It just had to be the one he missed lol

Sakomi Arorim

Most names for both the Pokemon & the human characters are changed from Japanese to English. Whenever Ash goes to a new region, He only keeps Pikachu around. Ash's travel friends he brings along are mostly characters from the game of that region, which could be that game's player character or a gym leader or a friends/rivals of the player character. In the beginning real animals existed alongside the Pokemon, but that at some point got retconned into only Pokemon

Sakomi Arorim

He did hear all the English versions before the Japanese ones (Which he kinda mentioned in the beginning of the video :P) Although the English Openings video he used just showed 1 still image per song instead of the Anime Opening visuals

thewizardninja

The vocalist you recognise is Rica Matsumoto (Ash's voice actor), and you probably recognise her because she's behind most of the openings on this list lol Side note: she was actually a founding member of JAM Project, though I don't think you've heard any of the songs she was a part of before she left around 2008.

Jan Sebastian Gutierrez

Honestly, as a big Pokémon fan, I'm gonna say that I love the anime and I would love a reaction for it... but keep in mind that is very long and might not be the best suited for a reaction. If you were ever to consider the possibility, the are three common options, as a suggestion: 1) what you already do for long series, that is to say multiple episodes crammed together on a livestream (consider though that many seasons are very fillery, possibly not that enjoyable and there are 27 of them); 2) React to the series filler-free (there are multiple guides online on which episodes to pick) to have an experience of only the highlights of the show (which can sound like cutting too much, but frankly the show was created to be episodic, so consider that it is very fillery); 3) react just to the highest rate regional journeys, like Diamond&Pearl or XY (being almost entirely separate journeys you might lose some details or references to previous journeys but each region is meant to be a different story and adventure).

CurseMark4Life

English and Japanese Digimon openings would be dope. Some absolute bangers from my childhood there.

CurseMark4Life

You should watch a video showing all of the censored pokemon episodes/scenes if you think a bunch of 10 year olds adventuring is weird lol.

Kanogawa_Hiro92

I respect your opinion, but no...the OG is better. Just because you're an English speaker and understand English, that doesn't change the fact that some of us grew up watching the OG Japanese version. And to them, whatever language they watched as kids will definitely feel better. Nostalgia makes everything better. Another example is To Be Hero X. It sounds better in Chinese to me because I'm a native Chinese speaker, but to you guys, Japanese or English sounds better simply because you don't understand Chinese.

Kanogawa_Hiro92

Did bro just find out what Pokemon actually means? Does he know Digimon stands for Digital Monsters? LOL Also, your video is demonetized on YouTube.

KisaraWolfie

Ash’s goal is to be a pokemon master. So he wants to be the champion and friends with all the pokemon. The people and pokemon change around him in every season because he’s changing regions. All trainers start at age 10 and set off on their pokemon journey. Misty and Brock are gym leaders so that’s also why you don’t always see them. Pokemon are the animal species of the world so there’s tons of them but some are rare and the rarest ones are legendary ones. The road to becoming pokemon champion is to battle all the gym leaders and get the gym badges so you can battle the Elite Four and when you beat them you become champion. Which is basically how it works in the games too.

StrykerEvol

Pocket Monsters is the ORIGINAL name for the Pokémon franchise in Japan, created by Tajiri, Sugimori, and Game Freak Studio. Pokémon started as an internal shorthand used by Game Freak and Nintendo during development, which became the international brand name. So Pocket Monsters is the franchise name, while Pokémon is the brand name. Japan uses both names nowadays, because Japanese media culture naturally maintains a formal franchise name alongside a shorter brand nickname. Similar for the slogan "gotta catch em all", which neither exists in the original Japanese games nor the anime. The Japanese version uses "Get Pokémon!" (ポケモンゲットだぜー!) instead. The US slogan was created by Norman J. Grossfeld, former president of 4Kids Productions, even though Nintendo and Hasbro were against the idea- but where overruled during the deciding pitch meeting, according to Grossfeld himself. Which explains why some people got mad, when the devs stopped putting every single Pokémon into their games, saying "How are we supposed "to catch em all", huh?", even though it was never the theme the original creators intended. TL;DR Version: Pocket Monsters = original Japanese franchise name. Pokémon = Game Freak’s internal shorthand and later became the global brand name. Japan still uses BOTH because their media culture keeps a formal franchise name alongside a shorter marketing nickname. “Gotta catch ’em all” is only a U.S. slogan created by Norman J. Grossfeld, which got adapted in other languages. The Japanese slogan is “Pokémon get!” (ポケモンゲットだぜー!). The idea of “catching them all” was never part of the original creators’ intent — it was Western marketing, not Japanese design philosophy.

StrykerEvol

Luke's Beyblade past certainly sounds like the backstory of a real anime character. Like an underdog type of MC, a friendly rival or an early team member. 😅

StrykerEvol

Bionicle being mentioned in this day and age? Bro... We better praise Mata Nui for this. I think my favorite was either Lewa or Kopaka. Onua was pretty cool as well though.... Although, my favorite thing to do as a kid, was creating fusions by combining their parts. 😂😂😂

StrykerEvol

33:15 "That almost sounded like it could have been sung by the voice actors or something." Well, that’s actually the case here. It was performed by Megumi Toyoguchi, who voiced Dawn (named Hikari in Japan), and Rika Matsumoto, who voiced Ash (named Satoshi in Japan).

Travis

need the english opening intro videos. thats where the peak is at.

WhiteDragon6

Ya no Ash has been 10 for like 20 years

Dee Cee

Haha, just do it. Watch all Pokemon Movies. They are all fun. You don't need any context whatsoever for most of them.

Elemento

If you think that you Pokemon is tame and kid-friendly, you should watch the "If Pokedex Entries were literal" by Dorkly on Youtube. There is some dark lore behind some of the pokemons.

Ochan35

So a few major things here. Everyone brought up how he missed the XYZ opening, but he also cut off the "last" Pokemon Journeys opening before it finished. Also that is NOT the final opening to the series as there is the Journeys OP that corresponds to Ash's "Swan Song" series where he reunites with Misty and Brock.

Prowlcorp

Please watch the full versions of the english songs

Rahxe

Luke: Are there massive pokemon? Like a big blue whale or something? Me, looking at the pause: Or something...

P_Solaris

There had been a few times where Rachel Lillis dubbed over Ikue Ohtani, most often because the dubbers couldn't separate Pikachu's lines from everyone else's when removing the Japanese voice lines. If Pikachu ever speaks in a higher pitch, especially in season 1, that's Rachel.

P_Solaris

Pokemon can and do die, especially in the movies. Edit: Is there a blue whale? yes, Wailmer and Wailord. Is there an ant? yes, Durant. And the Genshin Impact-looking boss at the end of opening 6 was Absol, the Disaster Pokemon. It goes around trying to warn of disasters, but is often blamed for causing them. As for Mew and Mewtwo, Mewtwo is stronger than Mew, but he is not evil. He's just traumatized. Edit2: Charmander's Japanese name is Hitokage. If you're hearing Charmander, it's your brain hearing Japanese and misinterpreting it. Edit3: At the end of Season 5 of Pokemon, Misty returns to Cerulean City to be the main Gym Leader, which is why they replaced her with May and her brother Max in Advanced. At the end of Advanced, May goes on her own adventure, as well. Edit:4 Pikachu can evolve (Its evolution is Raichu) but Ash's chooses not to. Same with Meowth. He can evolve into Persian, but chooses not to. Edit5: the pink dino-thing was Palkia, the Pokemon the controls space, the blue dino-thing was Dialga, the Pokemon that controls time, and the blue jackal beholding them is Lucario.

P_Solaris

dedicating a fresh comment for this, but the dub openings are shorter than the sub openings because of ad space. In Japan, commercials only air after the intro, before the outro, and right in the middle, where the eyecatch happens. In the US, commercials happen every 6 or so minutes. Because of this, US TV openings are generally 30 seconds to a minute long while Japanese openings are generally a minute-and-a-half long.

Damien Frost

I know one bit of info was wrong because there is an episode during the first season Jessie from team rocket said she was 17

Aaren YASS

"Dark Pokemon" is not in the main series much. Or a focus. Not a season, I think it was extra stuff, either OVA or a short spinoff for Pokemon, but it was much more brutal. All I remember is a Charmander almost had its flame go out, it was getting crazy choked out!

Aaren YASS

It's basically Hunter X Hunter 😂

rialto

33:20 it actually is the voices for Ash and Dawn, singing together. His voice actor sings the majority of the openings. Also, about the Best Wishes opening, it's purposefully different since the corresponding game Black and White was a soft reboot and felt very different in comparison to any of the games before
