“Please tell me this won some awards” well yes, it did in fact win some haha. It was the most nominated film at the 2003 Academy Awards, winning 6 Oscars, including the main award of the night - Best Picture! It also received 4 acting nominations, with Catherine Zeta-Jones winning Best Supporting Actress. Her performance in particular is why I often revisit this film, it’s just so powerful and magnetic, she really stole the show in every scene she was in, but the whole cast was exceptional from start to finish. It sometimes gets overlooked when people name their favourite Best Picture wins of the past, purely because it’s a musical, but to me this is truly one of the greatest films.

Taraster33

I will once again put my vote towards "a little shop of horrors" such a good movie. Starring Rick Moranis who played dark helmet in space balls and the "key master" from Ghostbusters. And also including Steve Martin the GOAT. I think you would love this movie and will continue mentioning it until you cave to the pressure :p

m_love96

This is the translation I found for the Hungarian woman, but we're not necessarily supposed to know what she says since that's a part of her story: "What am I doing here? They say my famous resident strangled my husband, and I chopped his head off. But this is not true, I am innocent. I don't know why Uncle Sam says I did it. I tried to explain it to the police, but they didn’t understand." This musical/movie is one of my absolute favorites - it's done so well! I'm happy to see you watch it!

fry

musical fans don’t really love movie musicals but i’m pretty sure this is a very beloved movie among musical fans because they managed to capture the spirit of the stage show perfectly in the screen adaptation

Gianna

What a damn good movie! I really enjoy your reaction ☺ Now that it's Halloween month and all, I'd love for you to check out Coraline; it's a great "horror" movie, even if it doesn't look like one at first glance. It uses stop-motion animation, and it's one of my favorites. 👀

m

You should watch Burlesque next it’s a musical with the showgirl aesthetic but totally diff story!!

sheralee webb

Not watched this film for years! It’s a great film though. I had several of the tracks on my playlist after I first watched this. Is there any Harry Potter fans in Luke’s audience?

sheralee webb

Excellent film. I love the soundtrack to that as well!

sheralee webb

Love this film as well. She has an incredible voice

CCC Studios

Totally different genre, but if you like horror movies, watch the smile movies!

SeeJay

Not out in the UK cinema's until next week, but if it follows the US release schedule, should be available on Amazon/Apple TV within the next 6-8 weeks.... I highly recommend "Hadestown: The Musical" which is the stage version in front of a live audience, but also shot a little like a film. The story and music is awesome too.

Anika

The fact that you can't understand the Hungarian woman is the point. She didn't get a fair chance. They didn't care to give her proper representation/Lawyer that speaks her languge, if any Lawyer at all. They assumed she was guilty, so she was, to them. But she's actually innocent, I believe. It's tragic.

Anika

They aren't in 1918. She said she moved there in 1920. I couldn't remember exactly when, so this is what Google said: "The movie Chicago (2002) is set in 1920s Chicago (the Jazz Age / Prohibition era), specifically around 1924, which is the year the real-life murder cases that inspired the story took place. Key details of the setting: • Time Period: The 1920s, during the height of Jazz Age, Prohibition, and vaudeville culture. • Real-Life Inspiration: The plot is based on actual 1924 murder trials in Chicago covered by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, who wrote the original 1926 play. • Media & Fame: The story centers on female murder defendants manipulating tabloid headlines, public sympathy, and celebrity culture."

Angie

it was a film darling the year it came out. It was top of the list of my then- film critic bf. It was awesome. it isn't a musical, but I'd love for u check out the movie Frida, about the artist Frida Kahlo. its based on a in-depth biography, which I've read. it does a really good jib conveying all of the most pertinent pieces, even when they are smudged for more emotional truth, for example. its a gorgeous movie.

Vitero27

Has nothing to do with Chicago but maybe watch Spider-Man Brand New Day if you haven’t already.

Amanda T

Little Shop of Horrors is a must!

Metis Rose

Oh Yes! This is THE movie adaptation of a musical. Genuinely the movie made the musical even better! And it’s my second fav musical!!

Maks Lesniewski

"All that jazz" as a phrase has been in use since *at least* the 1950s, so, no, the movie did not invent it.

Peanutsinspace

Yes! Please, please Little Shop next!

Mericat

YES I absolutely adore Little Shop of Horrors, and he would *die* seeing Steve Martin’s performance

Juley

Chicago is a Bob Fosse musical. He wrote/directed/choreographed the original Broadway show. You should also react to Cabaret and All That Jazz. Both are Bob Fosse films. He made Cabaret as a Broadway play before he made it into a film. I think you’d love both!

Melly

Side note ... Catherine Zeta Jones was pregnant while filming this! Think about how strenuous this role was ... she's always a wow! ☺️

Raine Kuch

If you are not familiar with phantom of the opera. I would love to see you react to the live 25th anniversary version. It is the best by far, with insane vocal performances. The movie does not compare with the live cast.

Lu C

please watch REDLINE next time

Adam Crosby

Yes, please! Great performances and music by the writers behind some of Disney's best songs! Truly fantastic movie.

ess

Yes please!!!

Diamond Blount

Maybe you misunderstood her, she didn't kill him for chewing the gum. It's was because he was Popping the gum 😭

Aubrey Mayes

Sweet Charity is a Fosse piece that doesn’t get enough modern love IMO!

PumpkinSparks

In the geman version they royally fucked that up. They kept the songs original (so didn't have german singers dub them) and put subtitles under it INCLUDING the hungarian tale! On the one hand I kinda liked that we understood how tragic her story was, but it's not the point. We're supposed to not know what happened and have the same language barrier as the characters! Visually they made it very clear how tragic her story is without us knowing all the details... it still bums me out that they did that...

Lai

if u ever get teh chance to see it performed in theater, do it. a great and underrated musical is "victor/victoria"

Curwin Sphere

Can we please have Tina Turner's biopic "What's love got to do with it" added to the list?

Lai

i firmly believe Amos finds a woman that is gonna be great to him and apretiate him and they r gonna have a happy life and a big family. i beleive the hungarian womans story is that her and her husband moved to the usa. and they were very much in love and had a good relationship. but her husband got killed by someone else. i belive a landlord or something and she gets blamed for the entire thing or for being an acomplise. she is the only one innocint, its tratic taht shes the one that accually gets found guilty and dies.

Sarah

Oh I am thrilled for this!! Going in with no context is wild!

Sarah

Catherine Zeta Jones was pregnant while filing this! Truly incredible

Zangie_ Baby

You should watch cabaret next!

Audrey Gianelli

Great reaction ♥️ did you see LALALAND ?

Audrey Gianelli

And CABARET ? From Bob Fosse the one who originally created CHICAGO.

Audrey Gianelli

Don’t know if you notice but Beyoncé was inspired by THE CELL BLOCK TANGO for if I remember right the opening number of THE RING THE ALARM during THE BEYONCÉ EXPERIENCE.

J

Definitely agree!!

Chicago is a 1975 American musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The musical Chicago has seen a dramatic transformation over time, from its rocky 1975 debut to the enormous legacy it has in the world of Broadway today. The first production of the show closed in only two years amidst a lukewarm reception, but Chicago was given a new life thanks to a 1996 Broadway revival and a 2002 movie adaptation. Opening in the same Broadway season, A Chorus Line received immediate success and critical acclaim, running for a record-breaking 15 years, compared to Chicago’s mixed reception and closure after 2 years. In the 1990s, though, the trials of OJ Simpson and the Menéndez brothers brought true crime back into the nation’s consciousness.

Sarah

This, Rent, and Hamilton are all well done IMO

Sarah

Richard Gere's "stay away from, jazz and lickaa" is one of my vocal stims to this day! Great reaction once again!!! I'd love to see the Hamilton reaction, but also would love to see a reaction to the Rent film if you haven't seen it.

Nate

One of the most cynical musicals of all time.

Nate

Fun fact. Catherine Zetta Jones was pregnant. It’s why she always wore a one-piece in the dance numbers. She did all that while pregnant!

itsasin

Since you enjoyed this, you should try more Bob Fosse films, like "Cabaret" and "All That Jazz" (his semi-autobiographical film). He wrote, directed, and choreographed both of those films. The stage musical of "Chicago" was originally directed and choreographed by Fosse, and he wrote it with Fred Ebb, also the lyricist for the show. The music was written by John Kander. All the characters in "Chicago" are based on real people and events in Chicago in the 1920s. Most Fosse musicals feature dark subject matter with ironically catchy songs and his signature style of choreography.

Britt Quinn

It's an excellent film honestly. You should also watch both Mama Mia movies!

Tessara Dudley

You may have missed it, but the Hungarian woman was the only one of the “six merry murderesses” who had a white handkerchief instead of a red one. She truly is innocent...but it avails her nothing; without a translator she goes down for the crime anyway. She’s perhaps the only truly sympathetic character in the entire film.

Kate

This is set in the 1920s, flappers and jazz, gin joints, etc.

Tessara Dudley

Amos is sympathetic as well, but his enduring gullibility does cause frustration and incredulity in the viewer. He certainly deserved better, though.

Tessara Dudley

Fosse is considered one of the greats for a reason!

Tessara Dudley

I do wish they’d kept more of the voicemails in the RENT film, they were so fun, but they didn’t want to make it as much of a rock opera, I guess. I personally prefer the proshot stage version, but the film is quite good.

Tessara Dudley

Seconding this—Phantom is a must watch for anyone who enjoys musicals, and the proshot stage version is far superior to the Hollywood film. And it should be available on Prime.

Tessara Dudley

Ooh, if Luke hasn’t seen A Chorus Line, he really should!

Tessara Dudley

There are videos floating around where you can see Beyonce and other big acts using bits of Fosse choreography—he is definitely considered one of the all-time greats of dance choreography for stage musicals!

Stephen Offutt

Definitely should watch Burlesque or Moulan Rouge!!!

Jaime Diaz-Gonzalez

Regarding the broadway play, Chicago is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history and the longest-running show currently on Broadway. Regarding the film, it won 6 Academy Awards out of 13 nominations, including Best Picture (the first movie musical to win Best Picture since Oliver! in 1968) and Best Supporting Actress (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

Jaime Diaz-Gonzalez

The broadway show is great and highly recommend seeing it, BUT do not expect performances like in the film. The set is very minimal and pretty much the same throughout the entire play.

Steven Clemons

A flawless movie. One of my comfort watches. It's incredible!

Silvered Fox

I suddenly wonder if Luke's seen the legally blonde musical and if not I hope that makes it to the list somewhere! Hopefully a clear ish old quality (not any of the crappy ai 'upscale' slop that makes all the faces look weird) but it's a fun good one to watch for sure

itsasin

Yep, his choreography is unmistakable and he revolutionized the field. I was a stage actor/dancer for 20 years and my favorite choreography to do was his. However, because of its uniqueness, it takes a ton of rehearsal and repetition to master and is very hard on one's body. Liza was once asked about being a favorite of Fosse's and she replied, "I loved working with Bob, and I have the hip replacements to prove it."

Kal

The Kenergy song and dance in the Barbie movie reminded me of Fosse's style. Loved it

Kal

I remember gasping several times at its brilliance when I saw this in the theatre in 2002. PS Chicago is actually a beautiful, clean city with lots of fun stuff to do! It's the third biggest city in the U.S. and also has the biggest Starbucks in the world lol. The riverwalk, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, Wrigley Field, Second City, deep dish pizza... what else do you need? Just don't go in winter because it's verrrrrry cold and windy.

Cara Ferguson

This movie was my gateway to live action musicals. The performances were brilliant; the music, incredible. I think it's brilliant how they portrayed the musical numbers as being in Roxie's mind, with the exception of the first and last numbers. And, it's wild how so many characters are unlikeable, and yet, you're still happy to see them succeed in the end. I will say, I think women and men really experience this movie differently. Even in Cell Block Tango, women recognize how the abuse and marginalization and say, "Good for her." I don't even care if one or two of them appear to be psychopaths, I know how hard life was for women and I support them. 😅
