Edit: The pills belonged to his grandma that passed away- Love and Romance are not the same thing- Romance I’d say is more of a feeling or excitement think of how ppl act over crushes or that feeling you got being young around Valentine’s Day

You can have romance without any actual love. Not to mention there's a million different types of love. Romance leans into the romantic (obviously), but love can be family, pets, partners, friends. Authentic love is different than romance. And one of the biggest tells about Bear is that he doesn't know the difference. Other tells about Bear: - He's negligent with his home and his pets. His home is gross, he left a pill bottle open where his cat could get to it. Which I've seen so much talk is that the cat kind of symbolizes Nikki's autonomy in a way. Like Bear's complete disregard for it. The cat dies and he just throws them in the trash, and then throughout the movie the cat is just toyed with. ("I did just lose my cat, Bear" or "I just lost my free will"). Love that he also says when he finds the cat "how did you get in there". He's blaming the cat and not the fact that he obviously left the bottle open where the cat could get to it. - Also, if you read the subtitles, he’s not even crying about the cat. He says “why won’t she-“ referring to Nikki not liking him back. Bro. He does not give too shits about the cat. - He goes to the store to get Nikki a crystal necklace, goes "she would hate this", then picks out the willow toy and when questioned by the clerk he goes "I like this." Not "Nikki would like this", "I like this." - When given the opportunity to tell Nikki, he chickens out again because it's not on his terms. And even later when SHE confesses, it's because he refuses to be the vulnerable one and makes her say it first and only then does he admit that he likes her. - While he didn't think the wish would work, obviously, the wish itself says a lot "I wish Nikki loved me more than anyone in the world" ... That wish alone is a selfish and evil wish. It's a wish that Nikki would change instead of something like "I wish I had the courage to talk to Nikki" which would be him acknowledging his own flaws and wanting to work on himself. - After they start making out and Nikki freaks out (comes back to herself) Bear immediately is like "you kissed me" putting the blame on Nikki, deflecting his part in taking advantage of someone who is clearly not in their right state of mind. He does this several times. - I think it's rather telling what Bear does after he reads the Probe reviews for the Willow. Just by looking it up on Probe he's actively acknowledging that he thinks the wish might of worked. Sure, there's mixed reviews and you wouldn't be super quick to jump to magic exists, but it's telling that Bear actively chooses to try and convince himself that it didn't work and these are just Nikki's latent feelings for him. He could have erred on the side of caution but no. He chose the option that benefited him. - Instead of getting Nikki help at any point when she's clearly not acting like herself he goes along with her being in love with him because it's what he wants. - Once he's basically confirmed that the wish worked he sleeps with her. - He didn't want to cancel the wish, he just wanted to alter it which still robs Nikki of her autonomy. - Anytime Nikki freaks out Bear just sits there and doesn't do crap. - Telling Freaky Nikki to act like Real Nikki, regardless of anything that came before, this is the part where it is 100% confirmed he knows the wish worked. - "What's so bad about being with me?" Oh this whiny pathetic sack of crap! It's not about you! You've ruined this girl's life! ' "I wish Nikki Freeman only loved me as a friend" That's still robbing her of her free will you little asshat! UGH! - Even in the end he's too much of a coward to actually let Nikki free and tries to throw up the pills. Something Indie and Curry talked about is that they did several different takes with her before the wish where sometimes she played it like she was into Bear, sometimes it was more friendly, and they just kind of mixed the takes together so that we're seeing their interaction through Bear's POV, questioning if maybe she does like him, maybe she doesn't. Cuz sometimes it is hard to read. And there's also the unfortunate side effect that women just being baseline nice can be mistaken as an invitation by some guys. ....It's a whole mess. To be honest though, everyone in this movie failed Nikki.

Bear really is a coward to the end. He can't even commit to killing himself properly until Nikki's wish takes effect, and I actually think he DOESN'T forget about the pills when it happens and he stops trying to throw them up intentionally, turning his suicide into an actual act of love for her. Letting himself die so he could free the real Nikki from the hell he trapped her in is essentially the only decent thing he does in the entire movie, and it doesn't happen until Freaky Nikki wishes he loved her more than anyone in the world.

The “it’s not a romance, it’s a love story” line always just reminds me of The Haunting of Bly Manor.

So fun facts about the movie: 1) The director actually filmed two takes of the beginning scenes with Bear and Nikki, one with Inde playing her as actually being into Bear and one where she’s not, and then they spliced them together. So it is genuinely supposed to be ambiguous to the audience whether she liked him or not! 2) The voice on the helpline was the director XD 3) The theory (I think confirmed?) is that the shop guy Bear talks to is so chill because he wished away his anxiety

Ian was friends with benefits with Nikke. He didn't want to hurt bear telling him that, so he let her be the one to let him down before the wish, and was going to tell him about it later. Also if you missed it the Hanzel and Gretel reading was supposed to reflect how Nikke sees Bear as a brother.

I think there's an important distinction between real "loving someone more than anyone else in the world" and a magical version not existing within real life constraints. In that a normal natural version isn't "I will also completely ignore my own well-being to love you". This magical wish version treats Nikki herself as one of the people she loves less than she loves Bear

This movie is only possible the way it is because the MC is an incel dude. Had it been a woman, this would've become a slasher film where he kills every dude that looks at her cuz she would've tried to run away or resolve this wayyy sooner. The dude is the villain even tho the willow entity is the antagonist. In the end, the woman is the victim and STILL the one having to bear all the responsibility of of his selfish actions. Maybe she can do something with those billion dollars.

Im so glad you watched this!! I've been recommending it to everyone since I've seen it. I feel like its a new age horror film thats actually terrifying! Idk if anyone has said this already, but im pretty sure the director said Nikki is definitely going to jail because she cant explain all thats happened 😭😂 maybe fact check me but the behind the scenes was needed to go to sleep the first night I watched it haha
