Time flies, we have only a few more months and we're in 2024 already! 🤯 No flying cars yet, but there's still time to experience some of the scifi stuff people have been dreaming of for so long: virtual reality that you can touch.

Well, the tech is already there and Meta is working on Meta Gloves to replace controllers. There are lots of many smaller companies working on their own haptic gloves. Some go very deep with it, like HaptX, though at insane prices. But there are some that are more affordable and available already too.

I've been tempted to buy a pair of such gloves and try to add support for them in VAM. It would be a bit of a time sink though, so keeping it on hold for now. But if we get to 500 supporters this year, I'll buy a pair of bHaptics TactGlove  and give it a go to adding VAM support to celebrate! This was their launch video earlier this year for people interested. I've seen reviews that you can pet 🐱 with them, so I figured it might have an application or two in vam too.

bHaptics also has other haptic devices so (assuming that their SDK is not bananas) I'd likely try to make it work for their other devices too, like the TactVest, so that vam models can tickle you, hug you, massage you, etc.

I would immediately buy them if VAM supports them meaningful, so hope you reach your goal ;)

I've got a set of DiverX gloves that showed up 2 weeks ago. They're pretty amazing if you (like me) have 2 Tundra trackers that you can use to turn them into full controllers in VR. I'm still waiting for a response as to when I can buy the Haptics module to add-on, as they were sold out during the kickstarter. The one I'm MOST interested in, though... I also have a set of Bifrost Pulse gloves that should be shipping soon. The haptics on the bHaptics and DiverX (and Woojer, and all the rest) are basically limited to what you have in the Oculus and Index controllers. Vibration, but in many more locations. So, it should be fairly straightforward to implement because you already have the functional code to Do The Thing, it's mostly a matter of (re)-application, but...not *that* exciting to me. I've used it with index and oculus controllers, and it's not particularly convincing, really. The Bifrost Pulse gloves, though? https://www.bifrostvr.com/ ***Resistance when you touch a collider*** - and only $275, to boot. I'll provide a trip report when they show up.

" So, it should be fairly straightforward to implement because you already have the functional code to Do The Thing, " what code to Do The Thing?!

As a pianist....I would buy these gloves the moment I could create a Bösendorfer piano asset, a beautiful woman, and a island. With "Alive"...of course I can imagine that those gloves, with a musical instrument, would transform music in a exciting direction.... Something I've been thinking about for as long as VR was a word. .

I don't play music but I thought about doing a piano plugin for vam once. Technically it can be done even with my ExtraTriggers plugin. But with controllers it's not much of any use.. With haptics, I might be wrong on this, but I don't think the feedback & tracking are good and fast enough for typing or pressing keys to be actually practical. Maybe on the $17k (!?) haptX gloves, but even those I'd bet are a bit clunky and too much of a hindrance... People tried to simulate a real piano, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeVtx5mlS2U but something like that I think will be practical with like the 2nd or 3rd generation of commercial haptic devices. As it stands we're still waiting for the 1st generation really. We only have dev kits. At least that I think is the case for simulating real life instruments, which require a lot of dexterity & sensitive touches. For just making music, many people probably enjoy stuff like Modulia Studio, Virtuoso, LyraVR, etc. that use VR as the music instrument. But yeah, they don't look too cool lol. I imagine pianists would love a sim where you play for an audience, like a victorian ball or the titanic, somewhere to zone out and just play, not flashy floaty cyber-bubbles that look like playing candy crush in vr, so I get the appeal for vam for stuff like that

You nailed it. Watching the link now...and yeah...we have a ways to go it appears. Appreciate the share...gives me some ideas too.
