Why did some songs do better than others? (Patreon)
Content
Well, "songs" isn't the right word. More so, "videos."Here is my best guess, but I really would love your opinions.
Eagle 1
It's just a good song. The moment it was finished, I knew it would take off. No question why it got shared. The first thing I did after making it was post it on Discord, and it didn't get too many up votes (maybe 40ish? Idk). But it did show the algorithm who is interested in this video. After, what I think happened is that it got shared a lot (thank you, everyone, for that). Y'all added it to playlists and shared it on Discord, which helped the algorithm learn who likes it. I also noticed that the nature of comments I received has changed a lot since publishing it, for the better. The thumbnail is pretty good. It's engaging and I prototype it a lot, so that definitely helped. Thumbnails seem very important for being clickable and for brand recognition. Because this specific video did well, it's why all of my thumbnails are half white with text and a waifu (or husbando) on the other.
Orbital Artillery
This one took a long time to take off, but once it did, it really did. I think that it's quite different from Eagle 1 and from most songs I've ever heard, so the algorithm had a hard time figuring out who to show this to.The thumbnail is also a solid 10/10 thirst trap waifu, and it has the highest click-through rate (percent of people who see the thumbnail—"impressions"—who then click on the video. The funny thing about this is that I really think the audio quality is worse than even some of my older videos, so I think the lyrics, vibe, and fantasy are why this one did well.
What She Doesn't Know
Bad thumbnail, kinda' "meh" song. I really liked it, but it wasn't breaking any ground. Though, it did turn this OST into a musical drama, which has been good for overall flavor in my channel.
Doing My Part
Awesome song, bad thumbnail. This, to me, really convinced me that I need to put more thought into my thumbnails. I have a leftover piece of art from Welcome to Klendath II, Gentleman that I didn't use, so I might swap it over (the yellow one, specifically). It's one of the most liked songs (from people who watched it), but with lower retention, so I think this is just it being so different and YouTube being wrong about who to show it to.
Run Bunny Run
My 3rd he's performing video relative to time up, beat only by Eagle 1 and Orbital Artillery.I think this one did well because it has an engaging thumbnail, a story that follows up people who've been subscribed and paying attention, and the song is more similar to the song thst got me noticed.Going forward, this trend probably needs I'll need to have a ratio of at least 1 rock song per other genres, which I don't want to go over, since more variety could mean that I reach a broader audience who always wants to see what the hell the next song is going to be like.
Pepper Spray and Acid Rain
Thirst trap for my listeners who need a solid husbando and for those following the OST's story. High click-through rate, too.The lyrics with this and Orbital Artillery are my best work, I think. This one, however, makes no effort to make sense and puts rhythm and rhyme before anything else.I think this song kinda made my OST into a harem anime, though, and "Feat. Destroyer-chan" will be the new way I signal that a song shouldn't be played around polite company. 😂Later, I'm gonna do a retcon where Peli-kun's origin story is explained, and it'll put this song into a new perspective, where he was with Dessy-chan before he met Eagle 1. See, Dessy-chan is an actual yandere and Peli-kun doesn't need that in his life.
Mercy
I am not sure I have a great thumbnail, or at least, it's not in the right genre. Good for a nightcore song, but we'll see. I think it'll be well received by fans of Orbital Artillery, though. Time will tell.I finished this video a week time before one of you became a patron, so that's why your name isn't in the credits and I do apologize for that.
Welcome to Klendath II, Gentlemen.
The lyrics in the subtitles and video descriptions are wrong; the actual word pronounced is Klendathu, but I don't want to infringe on trademarks, so even the vocals are purposfully unclear.I wanted to make a nightcore song that was worthy, since quite a few people liked Presence of God. I'm hoping that it'll also do better with the dubstep crowd because Doing My Part signaled to the algorithm that I do that, too (I think). This song is...quite long and it's likely I'll release shortened version at some point, but we'll see. I'll also post a second version soonish with warmer mastering for those who don't like the treble as much as I do, though it'll sound much worse if your speakers can't whistle and squeel like Dessy-chan does, as the song is pretty bass-heavy ass is. On that note, one thing I am noticing is that all of my music spends a lot of time at extreme high and low frequencies, so they sound like total dog shit on most TV speakers, to say nothing of mobile devices. I don't think I'll change that, though, because I like extremes.
