Tell me what this song means to you._[Verse 1]She walked out of the desert in my likenessHer braid unraveled, trailing sand like incenseHer rank embroidered where her throat should beA necklace of authority sewn into fleshI kissed her shadow against the trembling canvasAnd tasted copper, dust, and the echo of her breath[Verse 2]She departed for a span of weeksBut weeks became panes of brittle glassStretched and bent until they snappedAnd when she returned[Chorus]Her eyes were twin medallionsBright and blindPinned upon the breast of a stranger’s uniform[Verse 3]I reached for her hand—It slipped from me, slid onto his sleeve instead. He smiled the sanctioned smile of daylightA smile sealed in law and paperI mouthed her name,But the syllables fell soundless at my lips[Bridge]In my sleep I buried us in the motor poolBeneath oil that shimmered like stained glass waterInitials engraved on a rusted ration tinThat glowed phosphorescent green at nightLike relics of forbidden saintsBy morning the reliquary overflowedAnd all our names drowned in it[Chorus]When I wokeShe was not a girlBut a crow enthroned upon the iron bedframeHer wings pressed down with strips of tapeHer beak bent toward meStill whispering my name with liturgical persistence[Verse]I opened the window and she fell like a stoneOnly to rise again, transfiguredHer feathers dissolving into smokeHer form scattering like incense through a ruined nave. And each time she circled overheadThe memory of her face slipped furtherUntil it was lost to me[Outro]I stood in the doorway as the motor pool dimmedThe phosphorescent quiet, the oil in the windHer smoke wrote circles in the rafters of my chestEach pass thinning, paling, a relic without restI called her by the name we hid beneath the din—The air gave nothing back, the glass was paper-thinThe window kept the last of her—wings wet from the rain—And what remained of me, remained without her name._A Necklace Sewn in Flesh, Draft 2, M_01.wav

One thing I always appreciate is that often I go into playing these songs for the first time thinking “I think I know what this will sound like” and I’m always wrong (in a good way). I guess it’s about the one that got away fading in specificity but the feeling always being a part of you? The bird metaphor is interesting, but I don’t think I have the context to know the deeper meaning. Did you guys do crew names on windshields?

Charli Morgan

I'm so glad I surprise you every time. I wanna be weird. I wanna push the artform. About windshields: we did not do that, but all of our trucks had names if they had any personality at all

Your poetry’s improving a lot! It’s beautiful. If you ever go back and rework it, I’d suggest playing with the timing and delivery of the lyrics a bit. There are parts where it felt like you want to really dwell on a moment but you were shackled by the original pacing at the start of the song.

Charli Morgan

Well, okay, so I actually really do agree with you, but there is a reason, I swear! See, I need my songs to hook the listener within five seconds or less because I know for a fact that most of my fans have the ADHD, as when I make music, all I'm trying to do is tickle my brain, and I know that if a song doesn't hook *me* in 3–5 seconds, I'm gonna press skip on Spotify. YouTube is slightly more forgiving, with 15–30 seconds being where most people drop off, but that is an entirely different platform. While YouTube *has* been kind to me with some songs, most bomb on that platform, so I design the hook around Spotify because Spotify actually pays me. All that said, I would love to talk about what you would have done different if you gave an specifics because I want to know if they're the same things I would've done differently if I had a captive audience that couldn't skip my songs. It's like, idk, I think of writing songs like writing, ummm, "creative nonfiction," if you will; an essay, essentially. I need a thesis, I need a conclusion, I need supporting arguments (verses), I need to a recurring abstract (chorus), and a rebuttal (bridge).

I love all the emotion in it, I don’t understand it but understanding isn’t a prerequisite to loving.

There was some other time that you said “my songs are like five songs at once and it appeals to people with ADHD” and I was just like “…oh” lol.

This reads to me as the story of a pair of sapphic soldiers, perhaps pilots, who found love in the secret spaces of their camp. Stealing kisses in the motor pool, behind tents and hiding their love for safety. Our narrator’s lover leaves on a short deployment that stretches and eventually breaks her; when she comes back to camp, Narrator hopes to renew their connection but finds a traumatized husk of the woman she knew, unable to reciprocate or even see the Narrator’s reaching hand. Her lover has been promoted and fallen under the sway of an upper-rank, male soldier on this deployment. (Unsure if there is a romantic connection there or more an encouragement to drop the romance with our Narrator for advancement) Upon learning this, Narrator is crushed and dreams of the relics of their love being consumed by the camp itself. This dream then transforms into the vision of her love, flying away and dissolving, representing the erasure of their connection.

I always love learning how different people interpret my work. 🤍 Thank you for that. I'm in a pretty talkative mood, so if you have any questions about the song, send me a DM 🙂

Sabel Grange

I tried to DM you but my app is being a goober and won’t open a chat. 😅 Thankyou for that invitation regardless as I would love to know more!

Story of a pilot and mechanic that were lovers and the pilot left on a mission, brutally died and upon witnessing the tattered, mangled corpse of their lover the narrator and unable to make sense of reality. A man gave the narrator a bird to try to help comfort them, the narrator proceeds to kill and burn the bird in the hopes of their lover rising from the ashes

2026-09-06 06:00 I love this song so much and to me it paints a picture of a woman mourning her lover who while still alive, is so loyal to her job/allegiance/culture that she loses more and more of herself (like her eyes, her body) until she becomes so transfigured it is almost like she is dead - the person she was is now gone. I think this person still loved the narrator, shown by her whispering her name with near religious fevor even while "enthroned upon an iron bedframe" which I imagine is what she was transfigured as when her ?militia has no use for her any longer - and why the narrator freed her, after which her lover continued to transform, this time of her own free will as she leaves this life behind along with the narrators memory of her name

I've been following your stuff for a while, but this one (and your recent tear of new music) is what finally got me to subscribe to hear it in wav form. Its inspiring art for me, just amazing work. I get excited every single time I see a release from you.

Charli Morgan

Thank you so much! This is one of my favorites. it's great to finally agree with my fans on what sounds good (I don't like most of my older stuff). 🤍

PyroWulf13

So when I met my girlfriend last April, we bonded over your music, and now we always send new songs to each other when they release. This song in particular means a lot to me, based on the interpretation I had.

PyroWulf13

So we are both trans and she was in the military. So I see this song as a trans woman going into the military and losing herself. Especially since she was in two different tours, both desert climate and she got blown up twice. She also has a lot of experience with mechanic work since her father was one, so the motor pool also makes me think of her. But the eyes pinned on the soldiers uniform I see as her having to be "him" instead of her true self, having to forget her *real* name and use her dead name. It just brings up a lot of emotions to me, so I wanted to share.

Charli Morgan

Pyro 🥹🥹🥹🥹 that's incredibly touching and beautiful. it's one of my favorite interpretations.

this really is a pretty song. I thing it's one of the best things I've ever made. Spotify disagrees but I think it's wrong. it's beautiful. it means so much to me. it sounds like my heart.

Zeke Gilbert

Spotify is absolutely wrong. This song (and Survivorvs Guilt) are some of the best, freshest, and deeply meaningful songs I've found in years. We've all go bills to pay, but I implore you not to leave music like this by the wayside even if Spotify doesn't appreciate it. The only reason I don't play it on loop is to preserve the emotional impact, and to only listen when I'm in the right headspace to let it hit me the hardest.

Charli Morgan

I love this one too. It's very different from anything else. I'm glad you appreciate it for what it is. 😭
