Catastrophizing is a thinking pattern in which someone anticipates the worst possible outcome and exaggerates how disastrous it would be. It can turn a manageable setback into an imagined chain of increasingly severe consequences, while underestimating the person’s ability to cope. For example, a mistake at work becomes 'I’ll be fired, never find another job, and lose everything.'
Emotional reasoning is a thinking pattern in which someone treats their feelings as evidence that something is objectively true. It makes an interpretation seem valid because the accompanying emotion is strong, even when the available facts do not support it. For example, 'I feel inadequate, therefore I must be incapable,' or 'I feel guilty, therefore I must have done something wrong.'
By using this field, you will overcome both cognitive distortions and develop a more balanced way of thinking and functioning.
