The Five Phases in Traditional Chinese Medicine are five stages of a single process, not five substances. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water name the characteristic movement of each stage: rising, peaking, centering, contracting, and resting. Any process that completes a cycle, a year, a day, a life, a digestion, an emotion, passes through them in that order, and each stage brings the next into being.

Together, generation and restraint describe a system that sustains itself: every part is fed by one neighbor and held in bounds by another. Applied to the body, each phase governs a pair of organs, a tissue, a sense, an emotion, and a mental function, all of which share the phase’s direction of movement. Health is the condition in which the phases feed and restrain one another in proportion. Illness is a phase that has become too strong or too weak and has pulled the cycle out of shape. The phases are therefore a grammar for reading change, in the body or anywhere, rather than a list of ingredients.

Wood is the phase of beginning: the movement of something that has been stored and is now pushing outward and upward into form. Its season is spring, its direction east, its climate wind, its color green, its taste sour. In the body it governs the Liver and Gallbladder, the tendons, and the eyes. The Liver stores blood and ensures the smooth flow of qi, which is to say it keeps everything in the body moving freely in its proper direction. Its emotion is anger, the force that pushes against an obstacle, and its distortion is frustration, the same force with nowhere to go. Its mental function is planning and decision: the Liver is said to hold the vision of where a life is going, and the Gallbladder the capacity to commit to it.

Wood is generated by Water, since growth draws on stored reserves, and it generates Fire, since growth leads to flourishing. It is restrained by Metal, which cuts it back, and it restrains Earth, breaking it open with roots. When Wood is in excess it overruns Earth, which appears as stress disrupting digestion, when it is deficient there is no initiative, no drive, and a body that is stiff where it should be supple.

The idea behind this field is to balance and enhance this phase in the entirety of your being.
