Honestly, I’ve enjoyed following along on this journey up until this video. The response to the Hi Ren video really disappointed me. It’s fine to decide that something isn’t doing it for you, but I felt like this was dismissed without really listening at all because the form wasn’t to your liking. That doesn’t make it not ‘correct’ and it doesn’t invalidate Ren’s struggles or those who do identify with and appreciate his form of expression. The irony is, your comments echo his own lyrics in the song. This video just made me feel kind of sad and dismissed.

I’ll be honest with you, Tiffany, I agree with you. I do appreciate your honest comment, and in retrospect I’ve been thinking about giving Ren a second chance. I remember someone (I think it was Loredell) saying that I need to do research on his story, and so I’ve been considering the notion of trying him again, maybe checking out his story and trying a different song. And if at that point, he just isn’t for me, at least I gave it a fair shake.

Hi Roscoe, I appreciate your thoughtful response so much. If you are interested in trying Ren again, I would recommend perhaps trying either Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla, which is a more 'traditional' song, or Sick Boi. Sick Boi is similar in some ways to Hi Ren. It's a sadly accurate visual representation of what a lot of us go through dealing with the medical field when we have illnesses that are difficult to diagnose. I view Sick Boi more as performance art than a straightforward song. Ren himself mentions in Hi Ren that his music isn't really commercial. It's specific to him in a way that a lot of people may not quite 'get', but in my opinion, any art that is honest and genuine deserves respect even if we don't personally appreciate it. Keep in mind also, Ren isn't signed to a record label currently. His videos aren't going to reach Agust D production levels, because while Suga is undoubtedly a musical genius, he also has an insanely talented team of people behind him contributing to the quality of his videos. Okay, enough rambling. Thank you again. I love that you try so hard to keep your videos as an inviting and safe space. And I appreciate that you took the time to listen to my comments.
