I think I know what you're gonna say, but I want to ask anyway.

This Patreon has been up for a year now. First: OMG, thank you. 2019 was my lowest-earning year as an author, mostly because of how the publishing cycle shook out for me with only one short book. I didn't see that coming when I started this site, but wow did this make a huge difference for me. So, thank you.

Okay, back to the one year mark thing: We now have a year's worth of short stories and some other fun stuff. At least one other author I know of collects her Patreon stories into a single bundle for the year and gives that to her supporters, which seems like a great idea. I'm thinking I should do that. I'd probably come up with some bonus content for it. Everyone on the short story tier would get this for FREE through Patreon, of course.

Here's where I need your opinion: I need to know if you're cool with me taking those stories outside of Patreon and putting the book up for sale on Amazon. I suspect most of you might say,  "Fuck it, we're in a pandemic. Go get that dollar, Elliott." But I don't ever want to take any of you for granted, and objections are fair.

By and large, people support creators on Patreon because they want to support, not purely for the exclusivity of content. A lot of creators explicitly plan to release Patreon content outside Patreon, so it's not unusual--but I would totally understand if anyone felt like this is an unwelcome swerve, or that they're getting a bad bargain out of being a supporter here.

(Turns out you can sign up on Patreon for a month, download everything, and then drop out, which has always been an issue on this site.)

Also, on that pandemic note: I'd also love to use this as a way to do some good. There's already a new book release on the horizon, so I figure I'm gonna be okay for earnings for a bit. But I keep seeing pictures of long lines at food banks and people out of work and it sucks. I'd want to donate the first month's earnings from this to a food bank or some COVID-19 relief charity. I wouldn't do this in perpetuity, because that'd be tough to track, but the first month is always the best for sales anyway.

Again: an annual compilation seems like a thing I should do anyway, and as a supporter you'd get it for free either way... though this does make a difference in whether I commission cover art, too. (I don't see audio happening for this, btw. Paperback seems...unlikely? Probably only digital.)

So I'd really like to know your thoughts. This isn't necessarily a simple majority thing, either; if I see a big portion of supporters vote no, I'll probably take this back to the drawing board. Your vote counts here.

Yes? No? Comments totally welcome!

I say go for it. Why? Because it is so hard to find authors that I like and when I do i want to support them so they keep writing, not just in their spare time after getting off shift from waiting tables or whatever they do to survive. I generally don't do the free kindle on Amazon these days, because I have been lucky enough to get a decent paying job, so I will support writers like you who keep me entertained and sane!

I think it's an awesome idea - not least because it'll be easier for me to go back and read a year's worth of stories in one file, in order. It's also a great way to show fans who aren't on Patreon yet what they're missing out on. :-)

Stray cats

Actually I'd like to have those stories as a whole book. If I lived in U.S. I would've purchased your books as paperback for collection but anyway I want to have them in digital format at least. Epub files are not that cool.

Leon

When your stories bring me so much joy, how could I begrudge others this? Go sell them wherever you can and make all the dollars you can!

pCiaran

Get the dollar. I'll probably buy the release version as well.

Get $2! I'd say you should release a GI collection and a PMF collection (wm too, if there's enough there). I think there are some readers that track one series and not the others. I don't know how that could be, but I imagine there are a few, and I'd personally prefer to keep universes separate in my content I pay for.

Far as I'm concerned, all I paid for was early access and a monthly fix of whatever you felt like writing (admittedly with a preference for GI smut). That's good enough for me. If publishing makes you more money and nets you more Patreon support, it'd only make me happier. And the fact that you're donating has my admiration and applause. Your example is an inspiration.

I wonder what percentage of patreon subscribers subscribed for GI related reasons instead of PMF related reasons (personally I've never managed to read PMF yet..)

Mark Henderson

I've been meaning to ask, which purchase method earns you more Elliot? Free Kindle via Amazon or purchase from Amazon?

Brendon Towle

I agree with Davin; I'd split it into a GI collection and a PMF collection.

*shrugs* If you're talking about selling something that you've already given us I don't see the problem. If I wanted I could throw all the stuff into a book format. Honestly, I'm good with it. You should profit from your work.

Just seeing how Michael-Scott Earle has monetized his collection and new works via Kickstarter, Indiego, Bookfunnel and Bandcamp...frankly Elliott, you're way behind the curve. Go get your money so you can keep writing.

And on the donation thing, maybe on a weekly basis, you take it out of whatever you've garnered in that week and donate where you see fit.

If the collection does come out, what would you say the over under is of it getting and audiobook format? I only ask because some times my dyslexia can really kick me in the teeth in terms of taking up time. I love the short stories and always have found time for them, but I figured there was no harm in asking this question.
