Heeyyyyy...

Hey.

Hey.

I'm writing like this to skip some lines for the preview cut.

Listen: if you're on the short story tier, you REALLY want to read chapters one and two (previous posts!) before you read this sneak peek.

I'm just sayin'.

Also, I have more artwork in the works! Nothing is ready for sharing here yet, but things are moving along!

“Huh. How did you wind up in there, anyway?”

“I declined my orders during a recent mission. This activated secret directives buried in my programming which forced me into the pod on this ship, which already waited to extract me. The crew meant to return me to custody, however we were pursued by agents of my original mission target. The Amethyst ventured into the Graveyard to evade that pursuit and link up with my superiors. Unfortunately for them, the Rohax attacked during the link-up. My superiors abandoned the Amethyst and fled.”

“What was the mission?”

“Infiltration, surveillance, and assassination targeting Lian Wen, heir and recently installed CEO of Stellar Wing Industries.” She noted Riley’s wide eyes. “I did not assassinate him.”

“You’re an assassin?” he pressed.

“By design and function, among other things, yes. I have not assassinated anyone. I believe the mission was set into motion on impulse, and with poor planning.” Her voice softened. Her gaze fell. “I did not want to.”

“You didn’t… um. Okay. Wow.” Riley’s lips pressed together. “We’re gonna call that good news,” he decided.

Thanks for this. As nice as chapter 2 was, I'm glad to have gotten a bit more character context after the way it ended. I loved this line: "Riley says he quits and so do I." Those last four words implied a wealth of information about her. I love writing that does that.

I agree with Vairya1 on that line. Selene didn't want to assassinate anyone? Or she didn't want to carry out this mission? She seems to not have a problem with killing out of necessity or as an unavoidable consequence. I guess we have to figure out who this buyer is and what his actual game is. If he didn't have a plan, he can't be a very big fish. At least fictionally. Lots of real big fish seem to get by just fine without plans.
