A story of the Debtor's War, the Archangel Navy, and a familiar reluctant Master at Arms on a battleship.

Part of me thinks I'm painting too rosy a picture with this one, but fuck it, this is space nonsense. It doesn't have to be completely true to life. :)

Hope you like it!

"Good times ahead."...That was an awesome, hilarious finisher. Wow.

I'm reminded of your earlier thoughts of writing about police and policing here, and this story manages to touch some (but not all) of those aspects. But like the Hauser/Nguyen subplot in Natural Consequences, it's sort of built on the premise that if we only get the issue to the right ears, things will be sorted out. Which sorta lies at the core of the idea that the system is fair and good, it's only specific people who are misusing it.

Yeah, I sat with that in writing this story, and I'm still sitting with it. This is the point where satisfying fictional narratives often just aren't true to life. The thing I feel like I should put at the start of every PMF book & story is a quote from The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien: “A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie."
