Billy isn't interested in mending those relationships. 1) He doesn't care about the slave revolt or Madi's cause. He wants Nassau for the pirates, is willing to share with the slaves, but that's it. 2) Flint killed Gates. Gates was a father figure to Billy. This remains incredibly important. That relationship will never be mended because of that. It's very personal for Billy. Flint is willing to work with Billy (begrudgingly), but not the other way around (not anymore). At this stage, Billy has become a lot more like Flint in season 1. He's becoming what he hated. He is uncompromising, he is willing to let others die or get tortured (the slaves in Nassau) for his goals. He's responsible for the torture of who knows how many slaves on the island. Silver learned a lot from Flint, but so did Billy. They did have a (fucked up) mentor-student relationship. Something I do love about Flint is that he's always teaching others, explaining his decisions, his way of thinking. Both Billy and Silver learn from him a lot throughout the seasons, but Billy learns his bad ways only, while Silver gets to know him more profoundly and sees his good side. This season really takes Billy from being the reliable First Mate/Quartermaster we know in the show to the Billy Bones you meet in Treasure Island. After everything Billy's been through, it makes sense. Everyone has a breaking point. I think Billy starts to break when, in his eyes, Flint chooses the slaves over the pirates in 4x01. He begs Flint not to do it, and Flint disregards him again.

(After typing out this full comment I realised how long it is, I just love talking about this show and these characters, so click "read more" at your own risk :) ) It is very interesting to see the similarities between Madi and Flint and how committed they both are to this war, which is admirable and I get their goals and am fully supportive, even if this season has really shown the costs and how much war takes from you I liked your observation of the similarities between Silver and Madi in this season and Eleanor and Max in s1 (interesting parallels in the script: Silver asks if he would be enough for Madi to leave it behind, and just last episode we had Max asking what would have been enough for Eleanor to leave and she replied nothing would have been enough). This same conflict in a sense can be seen right now with Eleanor and Rogers as well, though now Eleanor's role is reversed. In all of these relationships the key theme is about choosing love vs choosing ambition (though they are not mutually exclusive, for example Madi has the ambition to fight this war against England for freedom, but she also feels like she is doing this out of love for her people, just not necessarily out of love for Silver and I think therein lies the difference) Regarding Eleanor caring about Madi as you asked: what we know is that Madi mentioned (in 3x07 I believe) that her and Eleanor used to play together and knew each other, so it would not be a stretch of the imagination to think that Eleanor cared when Madi "died". That this "death" coincided with her mother dying during this same raid when Eleanor would have been about 13 years old really starts to show some of what could have been her key motivations in s1/s2 in trying to build a stronger Nassau: Spain returning and doing it again, which she mentions to Miranda in 2x04 - fear is a strong motivator About Mr Scott, I fully agree with your assessment that he did it to protect his family and other escaped folks that had been enslaved and that in no way it was a betrayal. At the same time I think it makes sense for Eleanor's character to take it personally and as a betrayal, this stems directly from some of her biggest character flaws namely being egocentric and not prone to self-reflection (both of which can be directly linked to her privilege as a rich white woman in this time - and also the fact she does not recognize this privilege, see the conversation with Mrs Hudson in 3x02) - so I appreciate the writers being consistent with these characters even if it makes them more flawed. A fascinating conversation between her and Flint and I do like that they included it even after Mr Scott has been dead for a season because his death had a major impact on the story Then the conversation ending when Flint asked Eleanor if Rogers was any different to those other men she felt tried to control her/use her. In my opinion Flint is right as usual, I don't think Rogers is different I think he is actually worse than many of the men Eleanor mentioned. But I also feel like she has to deny that he is that bad because admitting that she has let go of what she fought for at the start and that she is now tied to this man through marriage and a baby, yeah she's in denial You pausing just before Silver got slapped by Hands and then getting startled was so funny because I knew it was coming lol God the scenes near the end with the tunnels and Billy and Silver and all of it playing out to bamboozle the audience? Breathtaking, show-stopping never been done before. To then cut to the reveals of Jack and the Spanish coming? Amazing for television, horrible for these characters haha. The last 10 minutes of this episode are just so tense and full of suspense and dread, such good television (also special shoutout to the people who made the music for those scenes: absolutely outstanding it made me so anxious) Yeah no update on Anne :/ (and we only saw Max all the way at the end of the episode), but I do like that they made this episode feel more insular and claustrophobic to really show the breaking down of some of the relationships between Silver, Billy, Madi and Flint But yes the Spanish are here, the fear of them coming that has been looming since s1, they have arrived and like you said it will be a shitshow. Can't wait to see your reaction! <3

This is a really interesting observation on the Flint and Billy (and Silver) relationship!
