You mentionned something about rolling under ability score to succeed or something and it makes me think of One Ring , where roles arent made agaisnt the DM but against your own score. If you want to do something, then you check yourself if you can possibly do it. I love it for One Ring since it really is more of a narrative system. The dm (or loremaster) tells you what to roll but aside from that, all on the player.
