'I know what you're thinking. It's a stupid question - it's an FPS. It's the definitive FPS!'

One of my goals this year is to produce more regular, shorter content - 10 minutes or so. The grander feature length productions are great - but they can take many months to complete. Work continues on the big Molyneux documentary - but in the meantime, you can expect some shorter (and perhaps more experimental) videos to fill the gap.

This one is a look at the formation of a genre: How the first-person shooter coalesced into a new category of games; And how the terminology changed during that evolution. It's a healthy mix of video game history with absurdism, which I think is the only way to treat the mess which is video game genres.

Now there's a twist

Great video, and honestly it makes sense. I remember reading about this back in the day and it was so fascinating. But my two main takeaways are: 1) Doom is still one of my favourite games 2) I really miss dungeon crawlers

I will watch later with ma dinner, but I do like the newer term ‘boomer shooter’ for a game like doom and co, just fits well not in a negative way though!

Kinda goes to prove how meaningless videogame genre labels are when you think about it. Take Hexen 2 as well, is it an action RPG? A boomer shooter? A proto Immersive Sim?

I never would have thought of it that way, but it kind of makes sense!

Another excellent video, love the love for Dungeon Master - took forever to load on the Atari ST back in the day and was so worth it

Doom is a Wolfenstein Clone, no? 🫠

Nice! I thought you were going to go forward in time from Quake-killer to, say, Halo-killer and so forth, but going backwards was a delightful revelation. The point is fashioned and presented with the attention to detail we've come to expectantly enjoy. I do think that the conclusion could be made all the way back to Pong (tennis player playing tennis) and Asteroids (starship pilot fighting for survival) to show them as action RPGs as well. The same can be shown to World of Warcraft, League of Legends, and Farmville (for sufficiently low quantities of action). But isn't this the heart of video games anyway: something to do in a bit of make-believe.

always love your vids <3 thank you for doing what you do. theyre so special to me

Great video, the ending actually made me laugh out loud! Personally, I quite like the idea of a bit of shorter form videos in between larger projects. Your video on the Chicken-o-meter comes to mind.

Very good! I'd kill for some of those graphics, that Doom logo you've made is aces.

I finally had time to sit down and binge some youtube, and this was stellar. I would gladly pay money for that Doom Clone logo as a sticker for my laptop.
