Ammo counters are an underappreciated part of game UI design, I feel. Most of 'em are boring little things tucked away in the corner of the screen. But who could deny the brilliance of Halo's assault rifle, or Dead Space's holographic display?

Anyway, this is kind of a follow-up to Chicken-o-meter. It's a history of ammo counters, although truth be told not much has changed since Goldeneye 007.

Another really good video. I was expecting an honourable mention for Mass Effect's overheat function in place of an ammo counter, which was subsequently removed in its sequels

Another cracking video - never even thought about ammo counters - just taken for granted

Shout out to the first weapon in the metro series that shows the open sided magazine in front of the player and you watch the ammo feed into the firearm. Very cool B)

I thought Perfect Dark’s health bar-esque counter would make a showing. Perhaps it wasn’t notable enough — not even PDZ followed up (closely) on that convention.

Anyone else hear like, digital static or ringing whenever he speaks? I thought it was an issue with my headphones but its fine with other videos.

Some background noise I think. I'll track it down and eliminate it next time.

This is unrelated but can you please put the soundtrack for 2000 and 2001 for sale on Bandcamp

Dead Space and some of the weapons in Halo (the assault rifle) probably did it best. Another interesting video, keep up the great work Ahoy.

The next installment of Chicken-O-Meter when?

Another noteworthy mention might be some integrated ammo counts designed for some weapons in destiny and destiny 2 (no surprise, bungie is still keeping it interesting). Particularly, the Omolon branded weapons often utilize a liquid ammo, which is shown sloshing and flowing in the weapon’s holding chamber as you fire the gun, and even changing colors in some contexts.
