So... you may remember a few weeks ago that we reacted to Billboard's ranking of Taylor's title tracks, where evermore was in the bottom spot 💀 and this opinion was SO diabolical that we thought we should check out what other hideous opinions they have on Taylor's album covers and lead singles.

Some truly HIDEOUS takes in these rankings... which does make for some good entertainment 😂

I feel like this is the most I haven’t agreed with a Taylor Swift ranking lol. I absolutely love Debut. I really don’t like Red original or Speak now TV. Midnights and Evermore should be way higher. I actually do like Lover. Showgirl should be lower. I’m surprised that I feel the complete opposite about everything in this ranking😂

So I have always struggled with this New York versus Beach theme with 1989. When 1989 came out, the New York buildings imagery was huge. But so were the beach themes. Lots of beach imagery in multiple music videos, the iconic seagulls shirt, the rolling stone photoshoot with her in her white tank and jeans on the beach. I mean, New york has beaches haha. So I don't know if people are viewing her leaning in to the beach themes and thinking she is focusing on California or what but to me, 1989 has always represented New York in ALL it's scenery, including the beach. So to me it never seemed out of place. I was really confused when people acted like she was "retconning" 1989 when in reality, I just saw it as a different side of the same coin.

Thats so interesting about the TTPD cover because personally i'm obsessed with it! To me it feels like we've walked into a private moment we were never meant to see because it was never supposed to exist. The lack of imagery in it adds to this idea too because it's like nothing in it is performing, nothing is like hey i'm a tortured poet! It's like just complete honest and raw devastation because she can't believe this is how things happened, like you said in the honey breakdown, it's more of a feeling/psychological album than a visual one and while the album does come with a lot of imagery, i feel like this image is showing the state of mind where those metaphors were born and the space she's in while telling them. Cropping out her eyes, while having her body physically exposed and clothes slipping off makes me think of Matty and lack of emotional connection and more of a physical/sexual one. She's being seen but not understood. And for the border, to me, it kinda pulls me out of the image and reminds me i'm not in the moment, im looking at it, consuming it, or judging it which is like the idea of private pain being publicly consumed. Her pain is real here but it's framed and packaged.

i’m actually glad that cruel summer wasn’t a single because i love the way that it so organically got so huge and went number #1 through the eras tour!! The one thing that does stink is now when swifties say that now that cruel summer is one of their favs, it comes off like ur basic or aren’t really a huge fan! so I actually love when one of my fav songs on an album of hers doesn’t become a single because then it doesn’t seem basic to love it or it won’t get overplayed! like i’m so glad that guilty as sin for example wasn’t a single

I will say to defend billboard once when it comes to the lead single ranking, these rankings came out like a few months ago so maybe they put ophelia lower because it’s just so new and they didn’t know how much impact it would have now over three months later

I will say that Olivia Roderigo‘s debut album is similar to 1989 & teenage dream cuz the 3 singles that came out before the album did were so huge!!! i mean drivers license alone was #1 was 8 weeks!!! what a perfect song i have to say!! cannot believe that album is almost 5 yrs old

Yes, the first one I noticed is at 18.31, when Em talks about symbols for the albums, it glitches just when she is saying which symbol she thinks is right for Speak now. So I still don't know hahaha. Hope that info helps? 😊

I think about “Mine” though … for Taylor, it was ABOUT the fat that she wrote EVERY song by herself, and “Mine” has two meanings to me. This song is Mine. The album is Mine. And she has continued to talk about Mine as referencing her music, even more than referencing a romance. So from that perspective, it was a good lead for Speak Now. But I agree it should be later 😊

The thing about Evermore, it’s sooo fall/winter coded for the areas of the world that experience the season. I live in New England and so that image (and the entire album) provokes an emotion in me. I know exactly what time of the year I’m in mentally just by the image alone. And it’s more meaningful to me because of that, because I feel the “stick season” from looking at the image. And all the songs also melodically capture the feelings of stick season in New England and it’s just the most perfect album. So people that don’t know what’s it’s like to live through that season might find it harder to understand (not everyone obviously but it’s just where my mind goes when I imagine people not getting evermore)

For the 1989 TV cover, I think the border is supposed to represent the outline of a film strip since that's the style she used for the pictures inside and for the merch instead of polaroids like 1989 OG. I think thats why it's a thin border without the writing underneath like in the OG. Fathoming that made love the cover so much more.

I think the life of a showgirl was GENIUS. The teal and the orange really cut through the noise of everything else around it. It literally caught my eye when someone was listening to it in their car, I saw the color on their display screen and my brain knew exactly what it was. The colors just give “energy”

This is so random and not having to do with anything, I just wanted to share my thoughts💙🩵Not saying this is true, and it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day, but only because we have the info from TTPD, possible fathomings on Midnights, and because she did that thing on tour with Cardigan. Could 1989 possibly be at all about Matty? I don’t know when they met. And I don’t know the extent of their relationship/friendship at the time. But I was relistening to 1989 as a whole and I couldn’t help but link so many lyrics from other songs from the future that are speculatively about him, maybe… I was also watching your voice memos video where she discovered the name for TLOAS, and I couldn’t help but think, omg wouldn’t it be kind of unhinged of her to spoof/poke fun at The 1975 a bit with 1989. If they thought they had this kind of secret connection, and if he thought he would never be good enough to be with her. “You said someday we might, when I’m closer to your height”(fallingforyou) “Said you were gonna grow up, then you would come find me” Obviously it’s her birth year, and the album is very her!! But we don’t have a 1989 lyric or song. And I’ve just been thinking about all the similarities between Harry and Matty at the time. The band, the tattoos, the hair, the tumblr of it all. And maybe spending time with Matty was “ the decency to keep my nights out of sight”. Also if Question? is about this man…That song having the “I remember” from Out of The Woods in it is concerning. Also I can’t help but connect the woods/forest imagery🌳with Folklore and Evermore. Which is a whole nother can of worms :))) Just a thought! And for a lot songs I’m sure she draws inspo from multiple sources. I think Taylor is also just consistent in the way she portrays her feeling, which is quite beautiful.

I think this helped me fathom the evermore cover even more! First of all, you could analyze that image forever, the same as which cannot be said for that awful holiday collection cover, so its ranking is crazy. BUT! She's staring at the woods, and it could be that it's because she's about to go into them, back to the writing style of folklore. OR it's that she's staring AT folklore, an album that, despite its many admitions, is still pretty light and fantastical when compared to evermore. It's like she's outside of the fantasy, sitting with the reality of her emotions. Tolerate It. Happiness. Longing for folklore, but being forced to sit in the pain that she tried to distract herself from. OR that could be too much, but that's what I take away from it!

Guys!!! The album covers for TTPD and The Anthology are two of the best covers everrr!! The bed imagery is so genius because it somehow manages to represent each part of the storyline. In bed alone, bored, and day dreaming of someone else while in a failing relationship - in a love haze, messy sheets, laying in bed while maybe your partner is in the bathroom or something and life is good waking up to them being around - down bad, crying in bed, distraught and destroyed after experiencing the loss of your life. Masterpiece!

I know people have said it before but the black dog cover is NOT the anthology cover! At least not of the the vinyl. When she released the whole of ttpd on vinyl it was a new cover and I really liked that one as a choice :)

in ootw music video we see harry's necklace (two paper airplanes flying)and we know its his necklace from the photos etc and the snowmobile accident lyrics is clearly harry. also 1989 has a paparazzi/media sabotaging the relationship imagery that links towards harry in my opinion. i think it's just now that we know about matty and taylor it's easy to speculate

I love how different everyone's opinions are, we are all defending our little misunderstood favorites haha ! <3 For the album covers : TTPD is absolutely my number 1, then red OG and evermore (how could they put it so low ??), and Showgirl's cover is at the bottom for me I love the idea but cannot handle the colors.... For the singles : Willow is one of my favorite lead singles, and so is Fortnight ! But maybe because contrary to the other singles they are underrated and so they still feel like my little songs and not so much the world's <3 Love you girls !!

While not my favourite i will defend TTPD and explain a couple of imagery things that I feel certain on. The border makes a window, this is literally a reverse i look in peoples windows, we are getting a glimpse, an incomplete picture into the torture poets department. Her positioning is definitely sensual, if you look at that image thinking about guilty as Sin and Down Bad, then what we're seeing is a momentary glimpse into a dark, room with a tortured but elegant woman pulled between lust and heartache all while just a crack of light illuminates a specific part of her. And quickly on the anthology, that's my fav because it's clearly evocative of a statue frozen in display but frozen in a moment of turmoil. Even statue crumble when they're made to wait. The twisting of the Limbs also loom very edvard munch and another artist I'm completely forgetting the name of, now that is most definitely reaching.

I know this is a safe space to say this so I’ll just go for it. I absolutely HATE the TTPD album cover like full despise it. I had this opinion of it before and after I heard the album so it’s not a music issue at all for me. I love this album so so much!! I only listen to the anthology version because although I don’t love the anthology cover, it’s much better than this. I can’t stand the large border, it worked well for Midnights but not this. The outfit reminds me of ballet attire and the pillows are gigantic for no reason? I feel like so much emotion is always captured in her close up shots and not seeing that here probably is why I can’t connect to this cover at all. My favourite cover is either Reputation or Midnights! But justice for evermore 🫶

One thing I will say about Rob Sheffield is that he is a Taylor Swift STAN. Everyone has their own reasons why certain songs are their favorites and others that they don't connect with. In reading his book "Heartbreak Is The National Anthem" (it was a fun read) I now know why "New Romantics" is his favorite song (one of mine as well). Rob lived through the New Romantics movement/era in the 1980s and he connects it to the broader New Romantic spirit of expressive art and emotion, seeing Taylor as a modern embodiment of that spirit. I wouldn't go too hard on him; he's one of us.

How can they rank reputation as the number 1 album cover but Look What You Made Me Do one of her worst lead single? The 2 go hand in hand. If you fathom the album cover you should definitely fathom the song! For all the same reasons!

I feel like Mine is an underrated lead single, yes it didn't have the same impact as some of the other ones, it didn't chart well or anything but it was a good lead single in the way it presented and encapsulated the whole Speak Now album. Imo, it picked up where Love Story left off, making it the perfect follow up but with a different, more grown-up perspective, which is what Speak Now is at its core : a whimsical, sparkly album with a depth and more mature perspective on love and relationships. Love Story is a very naive take on love and Mine, whilst still being a romantic song, brings a new, grown-up perspective : love is not simple, there're ups and downs, there're fights, you have to put some work and effort to make a relationship work etc. So in this way, it does perfectly represents Speak Now and is a perfect transition from Fearless

billboard proved too many times already that most of the editors and writers don’t like taylor. while studying music journalism its been my responsibility to be interested in billboard charts, still doing that as a habit. with time it’s became clear to me that they keep doing these articles/ rankings just to have a movement on the website. there is nothing genuine about it and well thought through. Sometimes they even give controversial takes just to have the response from swifties. the moment they changed rules for their awards when they realized midnights would take everything was the moment i knew 😔 very very disappointing magazine true death of music journalism.

I think the parallels I’m connecting in songs is simply Taylor’s natural brain flow and how she processes love consistently but is also ever changing throughout her life. I didn’t know about the paper airplane necklace!! I initially connected the OOTWs lyric with Labyrinth “I thought the plane was going down, how’d you turn in right around” But the necklace makes so much sense!! 💙💙Love constantly learning! And also Dear: Apple, there should be a paper airplane emoji!!

I’m actually wondering if maybe she COULDN’T make the 1989 TV cover a Polaroid. Because with the discussions we’ve seen her do about owning her masters again, she also mentioned that the art, music videos, photography etc. was included in that. So maybe because she didn’t own the art or concept or whatever of the polaroids for 1989, she couldn’t do the same for TV?

I like this take! It doesn't come across for me personally (if that is what she was going for) because it just looks too polished / posed. I would have liked a less aesthetic photo - maybe still on the bed but half tangled in a sheet, maybe with crumpled papers all around her, and ink stains on her fingers - just something that shows her state of mind and the chaos of the album. I find that a lot of TPPD imagery doesn't hit as hard because Taylor is a) constantly referencing 1975 songs and aesthetic and b) still trying to look beautiful during all of it. I do understand the latter choice on a personal level - this is probably her least flattering writing and she might have felt like it would get too much to match it visually - but it's a shame she couldn't fully commit on that front.

I feel like the Tortured Poets cover imagery (both volumes) sit so perfectly at that threshold between pleasure and pain. From one angle, you could see them as almost orgasmic ( guilty as sin vibes). But look again and the torture/trauma (eg holding one’s body in shock) really comes through. Which I guess speaks to the intense duality of her relationship with Matty.

Chickens—I know you’d prefer The Anthology cover to the TTPD cover, but look up “The 1975 Sex EP”. The TTPD cover definitely emulates this EP with crumpled up bedding in black and white. The cover for the song itself is a brighter, farther out shot of the bed bathed in light from a window.

I think the TTPD cover provoked the most emotional response out of me when I first saw it. I think she watered down it's impact a bit by introducing multiple album covers and the album cover she used on Spotify the majority of the time was the Black Dog cover. Which was also confusing considering that was the Anthology version but the Anthology version for vinyl was also completely different. She didn't have this issue with Midnights or Showgirl. But I do think the original cover represents this guarded intimacy, not wanting to reveal too much yet at the same time, this is one of her most revealing album covers in terms of her body. Besides Showgirl, this is her most sensual cover. I feel like it's this perfect representation of not wanting to quite bare everything to the viewer, yet it's very vulnerable, and tortured, which is a perfect representation of the music itself: one of her most revealing and intimate bodies of work.

I saw a theory that all the black and white album covers are albums she didn't initially plan to have (reputation after all the snake / Kanye and Kim stuff, folklore with the pandemic, TTPD with the breakup and situationship that left her with a lot to sayyyyy)!
