Sorry if this was said already - but I think 4/29 is the day she met Joe. They were both at Gigi Hadid's birthday that night, a few nights before the Met Gala. It was on 4/28, but if she met him after midnight, it would be 4/29. This would also make sense that he was with his friends, they were high, this was more of a casual party than the Met Gala. Also - their hair would have already been shaved and bleached blonde since it's just days before the Gala.

Rewatching this after Midnights won AOTY - Midnights has been often undervalued by new fans because it's so different than Folklore and Evermore, but it's also one of her most sonically and concept cohesive album. Just as much so as 1989 but deeper in its lyricism. So much great music this year was made and I'm glad most people who got nominated for AOTY had at least one moment to shine in other categories, but I definitely understand why Midnights got the award.

It is one of my fav tracks on Midnights. Really hits me deep. It took some fathoming, but once I got it. I really got it. I also co-relates so we well to leaving a relationship, a job or something behind. This track is just another level.

I think in a way she is also speaking to her younger self. Not just the fans, this song once you fathom is actually quite deep and vulnerable. She is saying that she has made decisions which were not the most sound, but worked out for her. Though, she will not suggest being blind followers of her as you correctly mentioned. However, we are going to take her advice anyway :). Taylor described feeling like she's in a very isolated, desperate place in life, plagued by self-doubt, mistrust, and pain. The song urges fans to "find another" guiding light because she herself is fallible and could "burn out" at any moment. The brilliance is in the contradiction: she's the brightest star but insists people shouldn't follow her, creating a paradox where even her warning not to listen becomes advice itself. It's simultaneously a letter to fans, a confession about her own mental state, and perhaps advice she wishes she could give to her younger self about not idealizing anyone - even herself.

I was burnt out at my job. And that was the point Dear Reader really hit me! literally at 2 am. Dear Reader took me some fathoming and now it's one of my fav tracks of all time of hers. It connects in a way especially the first 2 paragraphs about leaving a job (which you used to love) or could be a relationship too and You would give advice to younger people to take that job, but now you have fallen out of love of that job. And now, you won't even advice your younger self to take the job as you are falling apart at that job and almost on the verge of quitting. There's this bittersweet contradiction in "Dear Reader": I used to be the person confidently giving advice, the one who seemed to have it figured out, but now I'm warning people away from the very path I once championed because I've seen the toll it takes. That feeling of "falling apart at that job and almost on the verge of quitting" while others still see me as successful or as someone to look up to - that's exactly the isolation and disconnect Taylor seems to be describing. The "brightest star" to outsiders, but internally, you know you're "about to burn out." It's interesting how the song works as both a warning and almost a grief process - mourning the loss of something you once loved and believed in so strongly that you evangelized it to others. That's a really specific kind of pain, and I've tapped into something Taylor was definitely exploring, even if her context was the music industry and fame rather than a traditional job.

for me, ‚The great war‘ is a little ‚Long Live‘ moment. A thank u from her for us sticking up for her, and buying re-recordings etc. The second verse is kind of giving 2016 /17 when she isolated herself („curtains closed“, „drank my poison all alone“). And in the chorus then it’s our hands that reached for hers. So I think the ending is like a celebration of us all still being here and celebrating her music :) („ Cause WE survived the great war“ we survived her being „cancelled“) It’s definitely my favorite on the album 🥲💛

I don’t know why but the language she uses seems too profound and powerful to just be describing a lover, and the “what could’ve been you” refrain especially gives me that vibe. could be completely wrong but that’s what I interpreted

TW {miscarriage} When I heard Bigger Than The Whole Sky, it immediately reminded me of my miscarriages, the language is so uniquely tied to a situation like that. Also: Claire Winter, who is one of Taylor’s closest friends, lost a baby early this year. As for me, I couldn’t even listen to the whole song, I immediately broke into tears. She sums it up so perfectly that I - and many others - have thought it impossible for her not to have it experienced herself. But then again, it’s the queen of songwriting and it did happen to Claire. But then she said it was all autobiographical and I’m all like 😭😳😱😭

I do really understand why people think Bigger than the whole sky is about a miscarriage. It doesn't necessarily mean it was hers. People have rightly pointed out that Ed Sheeran has a song about a miscarriage called Small Bump about a friend of his losing his baby. The I will never 'meet what should have been you', gives me that vibe. It's not what could have been 'us' as in a relationship. Or like folklore it could have been about watching a movie where somebody lost a child. I think it will be a lovely crutch to lean on for those going through something like this. Stunning song.

Also, I've been deep diving into the date April 29th and it turns out on April 28th, 2016 Gigi Hadid had her birthday party in LA and it was rumored that Joe was there! It was also said this party easily could've spilled over into the early morning hours of April 29th. I think High Infidelity IS about Joe! I think she met him earlier than the Met. If you listen to Gorgeous in correlation with High Infidelity it makes so much since! "I got a boyfriend, he's older than us." "Whiskey on ice, sunset & vine" suggesting she was still with frightful Adam when she met Joe and was in LA, as that's where Sunset and Vine is. The Met is held in NYC. This blew my mind haha! I'm hearing Gorgeous in a totally different way now!!

I have not read the other comments here, but I completely agree with your reading that the 3 am tracks feel different; it is like they are for her fans--they are less bejeweled and more raw. Here are a few quick comments on individual songs, with the advantage of being 10 days ahead of you when you made this video. 1. The Great War. To me this is clearly about a relationship-cracking fight between her and Joe. Nothing to do with her masters, everything to do with her insecurities and her past bad relationships boiling over. And, as Jayce has said on Discord, this is just a truly amazing song. It goes on your metaphors list! 2. Bigger Than the Whole Sky. I can't escape the miscarriage theme here. To me, you don't describe a relationship, or a tour, or your past self, or anything other than a future baby, as "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" . And the random aspect of a miscarriage (the bird flapping its wings), and the undeserved guilt a woman feels ("because I didn't pray") are just perfectly captured. This makes the reference to "Would've, Could've, Should've" especially disturbing. This is one of the saddest songs she has ever written, but it is so beautiful at the same time. 3. Paris! You guys reacted to this one perfectly! I love how you caught the theme of someone trying to gossip to her while all she wanted to think about was Joe, as a lot of people don't get that, and how you reacted to the "shade" lines as well. This is such a fun song!!!! 4. High Infidelity. I was a bit worried about this one at the beginning, but you got there! Great catch of Bonny's to connect back to the moonstone reference in Bejeweled. Obviously we all realized so much about this song on Discord the other day, but you were really almost all the way there. 5. Glitch. This may be the least appreciated song on the album along with Dear Reader, so I really liked how you loved it and got it instantly. 6. Would've, Could've, Should've. OMG, what a song! I think this is the august or ivy of this album. I appreciate the stopping you had to do to truly grasp this song, but I also miss the breaking down that would have happened I you had listened to the last two minutes or so straight through. I break down myself every time! 7. Dear Reader. I think we should step back a bit to appreciate the sadness in this song. As usual, I think Taylor is being way too hard on herself, but the self-loathing and loneliness is still extremely powerful here. If it weren't for BTTWS, I would call this the saddest song on the album.

mark I seem to totally agree with you as usual. I have seen other reaction channels say that Taylor had a miscarriage and that is what BTTWS is about. So sad. Hope they are ok. People are saying they think she is pregnant now. Bon & Em are the best. I obviously love the standard midnight tracks so much, but the 3am tracks really take this album to the next level for me and have some of the best lyrics I've ever heard from her. I think her and Aaron are magic together and his production choices are incredible. So glad she decided to work with him again!! the midnights era is one of if not the BEST

I get that so maybe not like folklore but I still see 'in her life in some way' as autobiographical. Like theres no fiction there anymore and created characters like Betty, James and August but a lot of her friends her age are having babies. I guess it just feels wrong for me to intrude so much on her privacy to be like "I think SHE had a miscarriage for sure". My personal visual for the song is a miscarriage or loss of child but I won't be the person to be so certain about such a personal speculation.

The first two verses of Dear Reader where she is giving advice sound like advice she gave herself during the reputation/Scooter situations, telling herself to snap when she needs to, to just run off (with Joe), and reinvent herself (reputation comeback album). But then in the chorus she says "don't take advice from someone who's falling apart", as if warning us that we shouldn't worship her and follow her blindly. She made those decisions at a time of intense vulnerability and emotion, and even though they led to great things (reputation, Joe, re-recordings, etc.), we shouldn't idolize her actions because she's just one person living her life, just like all of us. I don't think she's ever spoken so directly to her fans before, maybe Long Live?

I COMPLETELY agree and fathomed this last week on our discord server!! I think the links to gorgeous are very present. One of our mods on discord, Mieke, even said that the triangle/ding in gorgeous could be like an elevator ding to suggest Joe really did "come along" with her that night. I think this theory also ties nicely into other lyrics we have, such as "the moon was high like your friends were the night that we first met" and "some guy said my aura was moonstone just cause he was high" - It feels more fitting to me that Joe & his friends would be high at a birthday party and not a formal event like the MET. Also, I think she would've felt so sick about being a cheater, that she probably called things off (despite being completed dazzled by him) and decided they would stay friends after the night of April 29, which is why we have COUNTLESS lyrics about how they were meant to be just friends until they rekindled later on. I think how strongly she immediately felt for Joe is what made her really realise she needed to end things with frightful Adam. Then a few days later, she meets Tom at the MET and uses him as the getaway car. it makes PERFECT sense!!

Watching her Netflix documentary and listening to the Would've, Could've, Should've lyrics, I believe Bigger Than the Whole Sky is the permanent and damaging effects a covert narcissistic had on her core being. I believe these two songs are connected. Taylor's belief system was being a "good girl." Her father has very traditional Republican values. "I miss who I used to be," "You we're more than just a short time," "You're a crisis of my faith," explain there is no going back, the damage is done, she was manipulated into abandoning her moral values, perhaps even groomed. The love bombing and gaslighting screwed with her naivety and changed how she saw the world, and ultimately changed her relationship with herself not for the better. Who she was is gone and she will never be the same.
