One of my favorite things from this song is the second verse and how it points to other songs… “mr. never told me why” —> tell me why and “mr. insincere apology so he doesn’t look like the bad guy” —> you’re not sorry. Since the moment I heard this vault track, I’ve loved the progression from here to last kiss. The songs are so different, but both express different attitudes at the beginning of the song versus the end toward the breakup/joe moving on and taylor being stuck or left behind. This song’s tone is much sassier and sarcastic and a bit angry at certain points, while last kiss feels reminiscent and longing for what could’ve been in a way that MPF does, but with a much stronger melancholy undertone … I’ll NEVER get over the way she writes songs about the same scenario but with such starkly different emotions clouding around it .. genius, genius, genius!!!

Love this, and the song is just so catchy. I don't need to tell you this, but men are not always the best at communicating their feelings--more men should listen to Taylor Swift to learn how to do it! So if you look at this from Joe Jonas's 18-year old perspective, a lot of his pain would have happened before the breakup, while he was thinking about it. If he had been more mature, maybe he could have tried to talk to Taylor about it, but it is easy to imagine that he did not. So then the actual breakup would have released his feelings so he could be better after it, making him look perfectly fine. Also, when she says "He's so smug" and so on, well, if he is in public of course he is going to look as untouched emotionally as he can because there is no advantage to him in looking upset. Just because a man (or a woman) does not LOOK upset does not mean they aren't--often it is just armor plating covering a scared little boy on the inside. And then let me just point out that an 18-year old boy may not want Miss "Here to Stay", and may in fact prefer Miss "Enthusiastic Sex Partner", at least for a while (if that is what Camilla was offering). I think the song has some of the guilty pleasure appeal that some Taylor songs do--you know she is probably not being completely fair to Joe Jonas, but its just so fun. The Other Side of the Door is like this to me--its like, OK, Taylor, you are being pretty toxic here, but I love it anyway.

Besties, this was such a great chat and you really captured why I connect with Taylor's music so much! She's really helped us validate all of our emotions over the last 17 years! When Fearless came out originally, my high school boyfriend had just broken up with me and Forever and Always was EXACTLY what my 17 year old self was feeling. And so when she released Mr. Perfectly Fine, it was like I got to tell that 2008 version of myself “this is for you!” And I can appreciate that although it was not totally fair to him since he did turn out to be a good guy, it just felt so good to let that devastated 17 year old jam out to this bop, haha!

I’ve always felt like Sophie’s comment “It’s not NOT a bop” is her referencing something Taylor said in the Miss Americana documentary during the political segments when Tree read out a headline something along the lines of “these people are targeting Taylor as a person and not engaging with her ideas because they don’t respect women enough to debate/acknowledge them” and Taylor said “Well, it’s not NOT true”

can i just take a moment to thank you guys! you really open up these meanings for us but best of all heal let me explain… in the breakdown of my previous relationship i was the “mr. perfectly fine” and this sing kinda hit hard cause it made me feel like a ass hole on my own i wasn’t able to fathem all these things about this being so much about taylor’s perspective but not the rality of this and the most of all about the feeling the break up made her feel this song breakdown really open up some things for me so thank you for laying this out and helping me feel like a proper human being! <3 also for all the miss misery’s out there as a mr. perfectly fine i can say (an obvious thing probably but anyways) there is another side of the story why someone becomes mr. perfectly find ;) ps. even tho i felt like the villian of the sotry this song is such a BOP that i’ve always loved it nevertheless Thank you guys <3
