I think I first saw this in my late teens in the mid 90s. I was delighted by the imaginative gang costumes,and charmed by the gang culture that was not all about making money from crime. It was a blast to recognise so many actors from roles they played later in their careers.

The costumes were a little tough for me, but I'm also way past my teens, and time is harsh to things like that. I think I get what they were going for, though. And it was pretty ingenious to show only this slice of time, it lets us sympathize with these guys when otherwise we might not.

I think you are exactly right about the passage of time, and about how any other slice of time spent with these characters would likely have beaten me over the head with how unlikable they really were. I feel sure that seeing the movie for the first time now, in my late 40s, I would be considerably less charmed by the story. I am glad that I first saw it as a fairly unsophisticated kid. Maybe I do see it through rose tinted nostalgia goggles, but if so I'm glad!
