For us males, we were told to shave before we left for boot camp by our recruiters. Then in boot camp, we were issued shaving equipment and told to keep a clean face or face harsh PT.

USAF here. I wasn't told to shave before BMT but my beard at the time was trimmed, so it wasn't a big deal. I was recommended to buy shaving equipment beforehand instead of buying it at the BX. This was quite annoying as my beard grows fast and is thick so I had the MTIs yelling at after midday because I already had a 5 o clock shadow.
