Tonight’s story reminds me a little of my brother. I say that with love.

When we were kids, we were either best friends or mortal enemies. I’m a klutz, so anything I broke was somehow always his fault. He got his revenge by leaving pins outside my bedroom door at night, so the first thing I did in the morning was step on one. Sibling love, right? If you have a sibling, you know.

Nils is fourteen, lazy, a little mean, and very sure he’s the most important person on the farm. But Nils doesn’t get pins. He gets karma.

One Sunday he catches a tomte, a tiny Swedish house elf, in a butterfly net. By the time the sermon ends, Nils is no bigger than a thumb, and every animal on the farm finally gets to tell him what they think of him.
