As you may know, for a long time now I've been planning to put all of my adventures into a single volume. One of the things that's held me up is the format - I want to take advantage of the accessibility and convenience of POD outfits like RPGNow and Lulu, but neither will do landscape in the orientation I need (at least not affordably).

This has been enough to stall me until recently.  I've finally taken the plunge and experimented by reformatting Chains of Heaven to see how it worked.  It's a fair bit of work - going to print means much wider margins than I've been doing. While my hair-thin margins work okay for printing at home, books need much more white space, particularly in the gutter (the crease at the center of the two-page spread).

This eats up a huge amount of room on each page, which in turn triggers a bit of a rewrite. On the other hand, this gives me the chance to expand on the early adventures like Stellarium and Tannoch, as well as my 1PDC entries Lantern of Wyv and Sky-Blind Spire. All of these will be expanded into two-page spreads.

If I keep my sense about me, the physical book will have a lie-flat option, one way or another, so you can plop it down behind your GM's screen, roll your dice on it and have everything you need right there without flipping. (A rare few will have a bit of supplementary material on a third page, but it will be worth it.)

In addition to the adventures, I'll be adding some material to explain a bit more about the monsters, the places, events and cultures mentioned--although this is all just for context. My expectation is still that most people using the adventures will be dropping them into their own campaign settings.

Dunno how long it's going to take me, probably quite some time! I'll still be putting out regular adventures, so this project will happen alongside that for a while.

This is awesome news. I can't wait!

How do you eat a dragon? One bite at a time. Keep plugging away. It'll happen. We'll be waiting.

John Buczek

This looks great. Looking forward to the finished product.

Looks great in portrait orientation, but WOW, I definitely see this being a big project. How many pages do you envision in total? Regardless, thanks for the POD option (I'm in the UK). I'll definitely be picking it up!

This is a very good question. I think I might already be in trouble! I've got 26 adventures, and will likely have 30 by the time this goes to print. My current plan is four pages per adventure (a title page, a 2-page spread, then an overleaf third page or supplementary info. That means I'm already at 120 pages, which is more than either RPGNow or Lulu will take for saddle-stitch (whose main benefit is the lie-flat option). I can always go coil, but holy heck coil is so gross, though very practical.. but I'd rather not subdivide into two volumes right away!

I know this is a dumb question, but have you considered using portrait-layout printing and just having the reader turn the book 90°?

Michael Prescott

I did seriously consider that, but I've eliminated it because I think it makes it inconvenient to use: if you're on a bus, easy chair, or whatever, I think it's really awkward to hold a book that way (with the exception of ring-bound books, where you can fold them back on themselves). Also, at the table, I think it would be an awkward orientation if it were, say, placed between the table edge and a GM's screen.

This looks really great -- I'd definitely be interested in getting one once it's done.

Very good plan. I like it. Take your time and do it right.
