Painting a realistic eye!!! (Patreon)
Content
First of all, shoutout to ur families thank you guys for being here.... sharing ur coins with me.. i hope you're enjoying ur stay here in Artcyll patreon world..
One of the requested tutorials is how to paint face/body parts, so I'm gonna start with the eye!
I know painting just one realistic eye is so much different than painting a pair attached to the face coz you got to know the position in relation to the other parts and stuff like that, but hopefully you can still get tips here that you can apply when painting eyes!!
This is just a quick one, i'll continue to make more posts about eyes and more face parts!
I did this for about 15 minutes and I only used the BIG FAVE brush.
1. First off, I just started with a simple square of the skin undertone. (I got the skin undertone by color picking the part of the skin without shadows or highlight.)
You can either trace the reference picture, or just draw lines like this, just so you know where that part starts and ends. Or you can also just eyeball it! You can also do like vertical lines to mark the positions but i like it wonky so i won't do that here hehe
2. Break down the part into the simplest shapes. For example the eyebrow will look like a thick slanted rectangle. It would also help a lot determining what shape the part is if you observe the space surrounding that part. On the reference pic, the space around the eyebrow looks like two triangles, so you also have to have two triangular spaces on your painting. hope that makes sense lmao
3. More simple shapes! The eye itself looks like an almond and the tear duct part would be like a little triangle.
4. remrrmemremember!!! You should NOT use pure white when you're painting eyeballs because there's shadow casted on it so it should be darker than that. You could use a desaturated skin tone, but I usually prefer using grayish blue!!
5. Like #2, you can just observe the space around the iris, on the reference pic, the space looks like two triangles, so make sure you also have that space around your iris on your painting.
6. Now we fill in the iris with the color that's closest to the pupil (black circle), which is green!
7. I'll add more colors on the skin for dimension!!! We don't like flat colors here!!
I added peach, pink and golden yellow, the peach and pink are very apparent on the reference pic, it should be under the eyes (eyebag part!), some on the eyelid and close to the nose, the yellow part is very subtle but you can still see a little bit of it on the side of the eyes.
8. More iris details! I used a lighter green to fill the inside, darker green for the outline of the iris. The iris also shouldn't have a sharp outline, you should blend it with the grayish blue eyeball.
9. Inner iris details! I just used black for the pupil, and on the reference pic, it's more blue outside then green near the pupil, so i'll use both colors and their lighter shades for the details. Don't worry about the details too much!
Just remember that if the eye is a lighter color, you have to have a darker outline of the iris, then usually, cold tones are near the outline, and put warm tones near the pupil.
For example here, I used more blue (cold tone) for the eye near the outline of the iris, and the yellowish green (warm tone) near the pupil.
10. EYELASHES! I hate them, too much work so i don't usually put eyelashes on the eyes I paint lmao here's some tips thoooo
The eyelashes should point to the direction where it's at, the eyelashes on the left side of the eye should point to the left, middle should be upwards and right side should be pointed to the right.
11. I paint the details on another layer so I can always redo it if it's ugly hehe so another layer for eyelashes, it's looking thick and ugly right now haha
12. The trick is to use eraser to soften the look and keep the eyelashes the same way as the ref pic!
As you can seeee, the thickest part on the ref pic is the middle and left side and there's almost no visible eyelash on the right side so just erase until it matches and put some if needed(using the brush in low opacity!)
13. Do the same thing with the lower lashes!!
14. I just added some highlights on the lower and upper eyelid and on the inner eye near the tear duct part
15. Added highlights on the pupil!!! for a greater effect you should also reflect the eyelashes on it so as you can see it's not just a square highlight but there's like lines that's supposed to be the eyelash reflection. I also added some pinks on the eyeball for the veins, it's very subtle but it makes it more realistic!
16. EYEBROWS! Like the eyelashes, on a new layer, do some strokes first, the only part where the individual strands are visible are on the left side so that's where you do the lines, the main eyebrow part you can just do bigger strokes
17. Buttttttt instead of using the eraser tool, use the skin color and paint over the strands on the left side to make it softer!!! For the thickest part of the eyebrow, use a lighter shade of the eyebrow color and paint strands on it! Remember to lower the opacity when you're doing this!!
18. Skin variations!! What makes it more realistic would be all the patches, beauty marks, freckles, and all that skin variations you should put on your painting! So I added some freckles on the cheeks and some more highlights.
19. If it's looking too wonky, like the tear duct part here is too long, use the liquify tool to adjust!
20. Final painting!!!!!! Looking pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reference picture if you guys want to try this too! You can also upload your painting on our community section (no pressure though but it would make me the happiest in the world if one of u tries this heheheheh)
I'll share your eye paintings on instagram if u try this!!!!!! I'll be like a proud mama!!!!!!! pls i beg
just kidding no pressure no beg
but if u want to.... hehe
Anyway! This is just a lil practice for you guys to do, I can make a shorter tutorial post, maybe a more stylized one like how i do it!!! Or eyes in different positions hmmmm
I hope you guys liked it and learned something from it!
more to come!!!!!!
