APRIL VIDEO - CLAY MAKING PROCESS! (Patreon)
Content
MATERIALS:
1. Sculpey Oven Bake Clay (THIS LINK IS JUST TO SHOW U BESTIES WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, i don't get it from amazon coz it's so expensive there?? i buy it from my local walmart lmao it's usually just like.. $5-$9!)
2. Cornstarch
4. Aluminum Foil
5. Toaster Oven
6. Keychain Rings & Screw eye hooks
9. Jewelry Pliers
10. Super Glue
11. Acrylic Paint
PROCESS:
1. Make a core by shaping aluminum foil. This is optional! You can sculpt the clay right away without the aluminum foil core, I only do this so the keychain will be lighter!
2. Cover the core with thin layer of clay. Make sure there is no space between the clay and the foil to prevent bubbles in your clay! Bubbles will make your clay crack fast.
3. Add more clay layers until you get the right size and shape.
4. Use cornstarch to smoothen the surface of the clay
5. Use sculpting tools to get the right shapes!
6. Add hole for the screw eye! I don’t attach the screw eye before baking!
7. Bake! Time temp depends on the oven. I usually bake mine for 10-15 minutes, around 200-240F. It depends how thick your clay is too! Thicker = longer baking time
8. Put in freezer for a few minutes! Clay will be kind of rubbery and soft when it’s still hot. You can wait for it to cool down or just put it in the freezer.
9. Add white paint as primer (optional!) Add acrylic paint. It usually takes me around 2-3 layers of paint to completely cover the clay. If you have a heavy body acrylic paint, 1-2 layers would probably be sufficient.
10. Attach screw eye using super glue! This is important especially if you’re doing keychains and wall hangings!
11. Resin time! I advise u besties to use gloves and mask! The smell is not that bad, but… it’s not healthy for sure lmao and gloves bcos it’s sticky as hell! Or use it if you have sensitive skin! I don’t use gloves and mask anymore bcos…. I like living dangerously lmao You can put thick resin and put it in the lamp for a longer time orr put resin in layers.
12. Put it in your UV lamp! Drying time depends on the watts of your lamp! HIgher watts = quicker drying time. Mine usually takes 3 minutes but I like to dry it for a bit longer!
13. Put Resin on the rest of the clay. Put in the lamp again. Oh and make sure you put a lot of resin around the screw eye part to secure it well!
14. Attach to the key rings!
15. That’s ollllll tadaaa
TIPS:
1. Adding cornstarch to the surface of the clay will make it a lot smoother! And use it to remove fingerprints too! Although it won’t be visible if you add the resin. Be careful not to add too much though or it will burn your clay fast!
2. Make sure there is no space between your core and clay to avoid bubbles which will crack your clay!!
3. There are other alternatives to resin if you don’t want the hassle of buying all the stuff, I used this alternative. Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, which gives the clay a shine too but it doesn’t really give the clay that thick layer of clear shine that you can achieve by using resin!
4. Can you bake it in your regular kitchen oven? Yes, I never tried though. I also don’t want the fumes to stick in the oven where i bake my food! I bought my toaster oven for like $20 so… I suggest just buy the cheapest and smallest one you can find!
5. Resin precautions. As I’ve mentioned above, you can use a mask because some resin has very strong smell. Make sure you’re in a well ventilated area. Or just open your windows. You can also use gloves if you have sensitive skin, or if you don’t want the sticky resin on your hands! It’s really sticky.
6. If you're a complete beginner and you don't know if you want to invest on it yet, you can try air dry clay first! Sculpt without an oven! There are some cons though like... it cracks easily so you really need to work fast when you're sculpting. If you're also making thicc ass sculptures, it will take probably a day to dry it. But if you're just making small stuff, this one is for you!
