Thanks! Why the paper towel on top of the sponge in the store bought palette? Doesn’t it make for a very rough and uneven surface?

Should the top layer of Parchment Paper be letting water through? Should the top layer be wet?

The wet palette and/or consumables options Sergio shows are alternatives that allow you to decide which one suits your needs. Artisanal palettes, to call them that, represent an economical and easily accessible option. Professional or specialized brand palettes, along with their consumables, in my opinion, facilitate my painting work. One of the main characteristics of using a wet palette is keeping the paint fresh and/or moist. Regarding the hydration membrane, I point out that it requires maintenance to prevent deterioration; of course, it must be replaced when its useful life has ended. Recommendations: When using a wet palette, it is best to fill it with distilled water, as it is much safer, completely free of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, lead, and other heavy metals and sulfates in the water. If you will be keeping it unused for a long time, it is ideal to clean it thoroughly and/or store it in a properly sealed refrigerator. This is why the Professional Wet Palette is so important, as it has a suitable lid. Another observation is that some artists comb or shape the bristles of their brushes with their tongues. This automatically contaminates the paint and the hydration membrane with bacteria (a bad habit—avoid). This is unprofessional, if not unprofessional, in my opinion. Cleaning Resource: I use antibacterial gel to clean the tray, lid, and membrane of the Wet Palette; this removes paint residue. Then, rinse thoroughly. Discard the paper towel. I hope this helps. Best regards.

A way to prevent the mold is to place some pieces of copper in your wet palette. I used a normal electrical cable, removed everything around the copper, cut four pieces, shape them at in round 90° shape and place in each corner.

For short painting session (like less than 1 hour), just some very wet paper towel and parchment paper is enough.
