TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  Urban Sketching - 2 Point Perspective - Advanced Detail

This week we are sketching this reference as it's a great example of two point perspective! (It was a much loved reference that came in second from a previous poll)

Let me know in the comments what you'd find challenging and what you'd like to learn.

I've been sick with the flu for the last few weeks so I've moved all the topics back one week so I can recover. Thanks for your patience!

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 22nd July: People Sketching - Action Poses

Week Starting 29th July: Urban Sketching - Landscapes

Week Starting 5th August: Portrait Sketching - Quick Small Faces

POLL: What would you find challenging about this reference?

Files

Comments

Benjamin Parpex

The details and mix of color using watercolor. How to manage to integrate the white lines onto the building etc.

Hanadi

The perspective of this seems hard to achieve! Would love to see you simplify it for us thanks

Jacqueline Munkelt

For me it would be challenging not to get lost in all those details 😬

Lorna Graham

Wow … great building and I’m sure you will simplify this for us Scottie but I will struggle with perspective. However I look forward to the challenge 🙌🏻🫣😂

Carl

For me it would be the people

Marie Cornelis

Merci Scottie..j apprends ÉNORMÉMENT avec vous..belles vacances...

Ana Correia

All the details, how to focus and get lost in them

Sarah

The perspective looks tricky. Is it safe to assume the horizon line is at the top of the heads of the people?

Sheila Chandler

Not the perspective at very top and bottom but how it changes from top to bottom at what rate.

Karen Lin

The facade has overwhelming detail.

Karen King

The perspective combined with the roundness (unlike more typical square buildings), and the DETAILS....Arghhhh!

Jeremy Eicke

The details and likeness of the building and shadows. I suck at shadows 😅

Jerry Gerou

The people, the detail on the facade.

Pamela Vossler

I have a terrible time with simplifying. I see all of this wonderful detail and it’s overwhelming and I lose my focus.

Sheryl Galinski

The angles of white lines at the top as they travel up, in and around the windows. Very cool and also very challenging for me.

Steve D

The details on the building would be overwhelming. Like others, I have difficulty simplifying and get sucked into detail hell.

Jodi Dawson

With 2pt perspective, I have difficulty with the angles on the top edge to each side

Michele Campbell

The angle is prob the most challenging for me

Suzanne Taylor

Keeping it simple. Making it more referential than drawing out all the details. In one of the sketching tutorials on people you commented that your girls are always having to correct you when talking about dresses/skirts. You said that you just couldn’t keep them straight. Enjoy your time with them. They will be going away to college before you know it.

Kristin

WOW! The angles and wanting to put it ALL in!

Vincent

How to fit it in the page.... i always make my drawing to small or to big.

Anne

Ooh nice. I thought that there wouldn't be new videos this month because the description says August. Good surprise!

re235

The round parts are more challenge for me.

Suzanne Michel

Oh no! Well wishes for you. Our winter was bad with all those viruses too. Hang in there and get some rest!

David G.

Absolutely no worries! Here’s hoping you and your family get well soon!

Karen Ericka Newby

Yes, I'd say you very much do need to take a rest, and also get out and away from the screen, fresh air and daylight (advice from Nurse Newby 😀). There's enough in your library to keep us occupied. I've started into the cars, and also taken photos of some cars parked outside a garage I pass on my way home from work, which specialises in classic cars. I never realised how difficult cars were to reproduce.

Lorna Graham

So sorry for you Scottie and no worries at all. Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery. I’m happily working through some favourites to see if I’ve improved and I am happy to say I have, thanks to you! 😁 Take care and we’ll see you when you’re ready 🥰

Calufe

Mejorate 🙋🏻‍♀️

Jo

Sorry to hear you've caught the dreaded lurgy. Keep warm xx

Anna

Hope you feel better soon Scottie

Ida Johansson

Hope you recover soon. For me the most challenging is how to narrow down the “busy” picture to a less detailed sketch. What to include in the sketch, what to simplify and how, what not to include but still keeping the atmosphere of the picture.

Alan

Hope you are well soon

Steve D

Yes, rest up Scottie, don't push things. I caught what I thought was flu 3 weeks ago, which turned out to be the latest covid variant, and I am still recovering.

jo stock

Take care Scottie. As someone who suffers from an autoimmune disease I know how tempting it can be to keep pushing through but your health is more important than a tutorial. We can wait.

Brigitte Lew

Get well soon! I send you a lot of sun from Germany!

Colleen

I hope you feel better soon, Scottie!

Pamela Vossler

Sit back and just be……don’t should upon yourself. Let your body concentrate on its healing and keep a happy environment. Thanks for all you do for us. 💜

Karen King

Oh my, please, please rest and do not rush back until fully recovered. When I was young and healthy recovering from pneumonia, I was eager to get caught up when I felt a little better. Wound up back in bed for three weeks. Your priority is you and family first!

Wendy Rowe

So sorry to hear you are still not very well, hope your feeling much better soon, best regards

Dervolina

Hi Scottie, I love this video but am not able to finish as it freezes up at 27:20. I would love to see the second half where you add the watercolor! Can you please check with out?

Ségolène

Take Good care of you !

Kim Broman

Rest and take care of yourself. There are so many of your tutorials that can be revisited and practiced again. Sometimes just going back through the basics is just what I need to refresh my new skills, such as face proportions, people in crowds and sketching hands.

Petra

All the best for you Scottie and I also hope you feel better soon...we can wait and we have a lot to sketch with your older tutorials. In summer I have not so much time to draw every day , I'm often outside , but I take many great fotos for the future sketches 😃👋🧡🎨

Sharon White

So sorry you have been sick. Praying you feel better very soon. Don't rush back too quickly. Get the rest and healing you need.

Josh

Feel better

FranM

I really enjoy this type of scene as an enjoyable challenge and living in France, often seek out corners like this. For this particular reference I'd find the detail on the building the most challenging aspect in terms of keeping it in perspective and also how much of it to include. I try to stay minimal but I find I just keep going! I hope you're feeling better. Fran

David

Hoping you feel better soon, Scotty. I so much appreciate all the effort you go to with these fantastic tutorials.

Mukul Apte

Feel better soon Scottie... We are missing you!!
