TUTORIAL FOR THIS WEEK:  How to sketch SHOES

We are going in-depth into sketching shoes this week! 👟

They are often the part of sketching people we leave to the end but can be a frustrating addition to get right. (I have covered shoes in the past but this one will be in more detail and better 'follow along' examples)

Let me know below what angle looks the most challenging and if there is anything specific you would like to learn when sketching shoes.

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Week Starting 26th August: Urban Sketching - Simple Cottage

Week Starting 2nd September: Portraits - Looking UP & DOWN

Week Starting 9th September: How to sketch CARS - In an urban scene

Love the challenge!

Mary L Doty

I feel I am less confident drawing feet that are flat on the ground but at different angles. I sometimes feel that when I draw them they don’t look like they belong together. I am referring to examples 4,5, and 6. Otherwise it can more complicated drawing a pair of feet with recognizable emblems on the shoes like 1. Bare feet can also be hard. I know this is a lot of complaining about feet! I will enjoy any you instruction us on. Thanks!

Leo Wilson

Aaah bring it on! I tend to hide feet to overcome the challenges.

Steve D

I often find that my shoe's length is wrong, too short or too long, in comparison to the body.

Lorna Graham

They’re always a challenge for me Scottie, I try to hide them where possible 😂 #7 and #2 probably the most challenging. Love it when they work though ☺️

Alex

Working out the foreshortening when they are face-on feels like a mystery beyond my comprehension.

elyse hubbard

I just took my kids school shopping and to remember it I sketched Nikes very similar to the #1 pic but it was so hard for me to stay loose - hoping for #1 bc it’s super specific - love this one

Pamela

It's the ones with foreshortening that I find the most difficult, as in #2, #5, and #6.

Karen King

Anything with foreshortening is a nightmare!

Petra

I think it`s good to draw shoes when people are in motion...thanks Scottie

Deborah Rifkin

My biggest challenge with shoes is to get them in perspective correctly/foreshortening. Thanks!

Melissa

The black shoes are particularly challenging to me-particularly achieving their shiny places.

Cydni

When shoes are facing away, I end up making them look like they’re pointing up in the air, like they’re walking on just their heels 😬🫣 also, the white laces on white shoes look difficult!

Michael Coleman

I find an oblique view hardest to sketch, particularly if the angle of the foot is tipped.

Jodi Dawson

Shoes in general are difficult to get right- my toe area is always pointed like an elf
