TUTORIAL FOR THIS FRIDAY:   How to sketch a face at any age (Available 8th Nov)

This week we are sketching portraits at different ages! We often practice sketching adult faces. So when we sketch children or more elderly faces, it can be challenging to make them look the correct age!

To help me make the tutorial, what age do you find challenging to sketch a why? I'm really fascinated to hear from you on this topic and see what everyone struggles with.

(These references are just the closest I could find to having a similar looking person from baby to elderly! 😊)

WHAT'S COMING UP:

Friday 15th November: Urban Objects - How to sketch anything!

Friday 22nd November: People Sketching

Friday 29th November: Buildings In Three Point Perspective

I selected the elderly man mostly because I see lots of drawings depicting all ages, but not that many of someone clearly elderly. At the same time, when you are making small sketches, you don't have much room to work with and what lines you make need to count.

David G.

I chose baby/toddler because the proportions differ so greatly compared to mature subjects.

Daniel Strasberg

I would say teen, the don't have the different proportions as the way a child would, so I don't know what makes them different than an adult.

Aprilrose W

I selected teen and elderly man, but have no idea how to submit my vote.

Mary L Doty

I find the teen years the hardest. I can easily end up with someone who looks more like an adult than a teen. You can find a lot of instruction for adults and babies/ young children but the teen years are often poorly defined ( much like a teen they seem adult at times and child like at others.) I try to make their features rounder/soft then an adults but that can end up looking too young. I look forward to your instruction.

Todas/toutes 😅

Karen Ericka Newby

I agree with Karen. The elderly face is blindingly absent from the beauty obsessed mass media. This subject's face has distress written into the features. The forehead will be a challenge. I think he's had a stroke at some point, too. Sketching the asymmetry will be a hurdle for me. But hey I think you'll come up with some tips. And the boy with the shadows isn't a gift either.

Lorna Graham

For me I struggle more with younger faces and find elderly faces less challenging. I love loose lines on faces with character so the elderly man will be my fave 😊

Merci Scottie, mais difficile de choisir..le dernier portrait en tout cas!! Merci beaucoup

I would love to look at number 4 for an hour or so, but I know for my improvement as a sketcher, number 5 has much more to offer as a learning tool. So be it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Glenna Shiaman

I would love to see a baby / toddler as proportions are quite different than adults. We’ve done old people before. Anyways, just a suggestion.

Melanie Beaudoin

I did an oil portrait of two little girls and the 6 yr old ended up looking more like a teenager... I'll enjoy learning what you find works in ink and watercolour to capture youth.

Petra

it's intresting to paint them all, to get a comparison.

Janet Brown

I've been trying to sketch my 6mo o grandson. my sketches look like him, but more like a 3yr old than a baby . I may be the eyes.
