UPCOMING TUTORIAL:  Friday 20th June: People Sketching - Black & White Photos

This week we'll be sketching one of these black & white photos! Let me know in the poll below which photo you'd like to sketch and why in the comments.

I have also added two important questions to the poll below.

1) Would you like me to use... a fountain pen or my normal Uniball pen?

2) Would you like me to use a grey watercolor within the lines or keep it just to black pen ink?

I've allowed multiple choices in the poll so you can select a reference, a pen type and a Watercolor option 😊.

UPDATE: You might notice below that in three weeks time I will be having a break for a week as my family and I are planning to move! It's exciting times but I'll be very busy so I've planned to have a break that week for the packing and unpacking fun. I'll make sure I post some homework and a list of older tutorials I recommend 😉.

I like reference #1. Love the children, especially love that one of them is looking directly at the viewer. The man is framed nicely by the window and has a great cap and mustache (and is also looking at the camera.) I would like to see you use a fountain pen and grey watercolor.

If reference #1 doesn't win, I have a humble request. Could you perhaps paint that part of the picture that shows the child in the dark colored dress? It seems like total wizardry, a kid in a dark colored dress, standing in front of a dark cart with dark wheels, and getting the values/forms to read through properly! Thank you for doing B/W paintings!

Ive picked reference 3 as it’s the only one with people both standing up and sitting. Looking forward to the black and white, great idea!

I only chose Uni-Ball because I have never used a fountain pen to sketch. Hard to choose a reference but went with 3 as there is standing and sitting. Overall really looking forward to this challenge Scottie. Wishing you and your family all the best in your new place…. exciting!!

I chose reference 1 for the different tones, cart & background. I initially gravitated towards 2, but seems too “clean”/staged? I did like 3 since I have trouble with proportions when sitting.

I hope no 1 is chosen. I like the family composition. No 2 doesn’t seem an authentic old photo and ref no1 has a better contrast between light and dark.

Ref 2, uniball pen and grey watercolour sounds a challenge - love it! Good luck with the move - I moved last year and sympathise but it will be worth it once you are settled in your new place.

Looking forward to this tutorial, Scottie. I selected fountain pen but I’ll be using my Micron pen since that is all I have. Would your provide some recommendations for fountain pens and ink? I haven’t used one in more than 30 years.
